Description
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft thermisch stabile Diamant-Compacts.
Schleifmittel-Compacts sind in der Technik wohlbekannt und finden in der Industrie weit verbreitete Anwendung
zum Schleifen der verschiedenartigsten Werkstücke. Sie bestehen im wesentlichen aus einer Masse aus Schleifmittel-Teilchen,
die in einer Menge von wenigstens 70 Vol.-%, vorzugsweise von 80 bis 90 Vol.-%, des Compacts
eingebunden in ein hartes Konglomerat vorliegen. Die Compacts sind polykristalline Massen und vermögen
große Einkristalle zu ersetzen. Die Schleifmittel-Teilchen der Compacts sind dauerhaft ultraharte Schleifmittel
wie Diamant und kubisches Bornitrid.
Schleifmittel-Compacts können eine zweite Phase oder bindende Matrix enthalten, die ein Lösungsmittel (auch
als Katalysator bekannt) enthält, das bei der Synthese der Teilchen nützlich ist. Im Falle des Diamants sind
geeignete Lösungsmittel Metalle der Gruppe VIII des Periodensystems wie Cobalt, Nickel oder Eisen oder ein
solches Metall enthaltende Legierungen. Die Anwesenheit derartiger Lösungsmittel in Diamant-Compact machen sie
bei Temperaturen oberhalb von 7000C thermisch anfällig.
Mit anderen Worten, mit bestimmter Wahrscheinlichkeit findet bei Temperaturen oberhalb von 7000C ein Abbau
des Diamants statt. Hierdurch sowie infolge der unterschiedlichen thermischen Ausdehnungskoeffizienten des
Diamants und des Lösungsmittels wird ein struktureller
Abbau des Compacts verursacht. Dieser hat zur Folge, daß der Compact beträchtlich geschwächt oder als
Schleifmittel wertlos gemacht wird.
Die US-PS 4 224 380 beschreibt ein Verfahren zum Herauslösen einer wesentlichen Menge Lösungsmittel aus
einem Diamant-Compact. Infolgedessen ist das erhaltene Produkt im wesentlichen frei von dem Katalysator und
thermisch beständiger als das nicht ausgewaschene Produkt. Ein derartiger Compact besitzt die Fähigkeit,
eine Temperatur von 12000C im Vakuum auszuhalten, ohne
daß ein nennenswerter struktureller Abbau des Compacts stattfindet. Ein solcher Compact ist als thermisch
stabiler Compact bekannt.
Andere thermisch stabile Diamant-Compacts sind in der
Literatur beschrieben und werden in der Technik eingesetzt. Beispielsweise beschreibt die E-PS 0 116 403
einen thermisch stabilen Diamant-Compact aus einer Masse von Diamant-Teilchen, die in einer Menge von 80
bis 90 Vol.-% des Körpers vorliegen, und einer zweiten Phase, die in einer Menge von 10 bis 20 Vol.-% des
Körpers vorliegt, wobei die Masse der Diamant-Teilchen einen wesentlichen Grad an Diamant-Diamant-Bindungen
enthält, wodurch eine zusammenhängende Gerüst-Masse gebildet wird, und die zweite Phase Nickel und Silicium
enthält, wobei das Nickel in Form von Nickel und/oder Nickelsilicid und das Silicium in Form von Silicium,
Siliciumcarbid und/oder Nickelsilicid vorliegt.
Ein weiteres Beispiel für einen thermisch stabilen Diamant-Compact
ist in der GB-Patentanmeldung 8 508 295 beschrieben. Der thermisch stabile Diamant-Compact
umfaßt eine Masse von Diamant-Teilchen, die in einer Menge von 80 bis 90 Vol.-% des Compatc vorliegen, und
eine zweite Phase, die in einer Menge von 10 bis 20 Vol.-% des Einsatzes vorliegt, wobei die Masse der
Diamant-Teilchen einen wesentlichen Grad an Diamant-Diamant-Bindungen enthält, wodurch eine zusammenhängende
Gerüst-Masse gebildet wird, und die zweite Phase im wesentlichen aus Silicium besteht, wobei das Silicium
in Form von Silicium und/oder Siliciumcarbid vorliegt.
Die E-PS 0 104 063 beschreibt ein Verfahren zum Binden eines Compacts aus kubischem Bornitrid an einen Träger
aus Sintercarbid. Das Verfahren umfaßt die Schritte des Metallisierens einer Fläche des Compacts aus kubischem
Bornitrid durch Binden einer Schicht aus Gold, Silber oder einer Legierung auf Gold- oder Silber-Basis an
diese Fläche und des Bindens der metallisierten Oberfläche an eine Fläche des Sintercarbid-Trägers vermit-0
tels einer Hartlot-Legierung mit einer Liguidustemperatur oberhalb von 7000C. Die bevorzugte Hartlot-Legierung
enthält wenigstens 40 Gew.-% Silber, Gold oder einer Kombination aus diesen sowie 1 bis 10 Gew.-%
eines aktiven Metalls, ausgewählt aus der aus Titan, Zirconium, Hafnium, Vanadium, Niob, Tantal, Chrom und
Molybdän bestehenden Gruppe. Die Offenbarung dieser Schrift ist speziell beschränkt auf das Verbinden eines
Compacts aus kubischem Bornitrid mit einem Träger aus Sintercarbid.
Gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung verfügbar gemacht wird eine polykristalline Masse von Diamant-Teilchen, die in
einer Menge von wenigstens 70 Vol.-% eingebunden in ein
hartes Konglomerat vorliegen und eine Temperatur von 12000C im Vakuum auszuhalten vermögen, ohne daß ein
nennenswerter struktureller Abbau des Compacts stattfindet, wobei der Compact dadurch gekennzeichnet ist,
daß er an eine seiner Oberflächen gebunden eine Schicht aus einer Legierung aufweist, die wenigstens 40 Gew.-%
Silber oder Gold oder einer Kombination aus diesen und 1 bis 10 Gew.-% eines aktiven Metalls, ausgewählt aus
der aus Wolfram, Titan, Zirconium, Hafnium, Vanadium, Niob, Tantal, Chrom und Molybdän bestehenden Gruppe,
enthält und eine Liquidustemperatur oberhalb von 7000C aufweist.
Der Diamant-Compact ist demnach ein thermisch stabiler
Diamant-Compact. Beispiele für solche thermisch stabilen Diamant-Compacts sind bereits im Vorstehenden aufgeführt
und in der Fachwelt wohlbekannt. Diese Compacts vermögen eine Temperatur von 12000C im Vakuum, beispielsweise
unter einem Vakuum von 10 mbar oder besser, auszuhalten, ohne daß ein nennenswerter struktureller
Abbau des Compacts stattfindet. Derartige Compacts finden speziell Anwendung in Schleifwerkzeugen,
bei deren Einsatz hohe Temperaturen entstehen, beispielsweise in Richtwerkzeugen oder Abziehwerkzeugen,
oder dort, wo hohe Temperaturen während der Fertigung des Werkzeugs benötigt werden, etwa bei oberflächenbesetzten
oder imprägnierten Bohrern.
Wie im Vorstehenden dargelegt ist, werden thermisch stabile Diamant-Compacts für Anwendungszwecke verwendet,
wo hohe Temperaturen beim Einsatz oder während der Herstellung des Werkzeugs auftreten. Solche Compacts
werden durch herkömmliche Hartlote nicht leicht benetzt, und dies ist einer der Gründe dafür, daß sie in

der Regel mechanisch in der Arbeitsfläche des Werkzeugs gehalten werden. Beispielsweise werden in einem oberflächenbesetzten
Bohrer die einzelnen Compacts, die dreieckige, kubische, hexagonale oder irgendeine andere
geeignete Gestalt aufweisen können, mechanisch in der Matrix der Arbeitsoberfläche des Bohrers gehalten.
Indessen ist es wünschenswert, die mechanische Bindung durch eine Bindung chemischer Natur oder mittels eines
Hartlots zu unterstützen.

Es wurde gefunden, daß die im Vorstehenden speziell bezeichnete Legierung außerordentlich fest an der
Oberfläche des Diamant-Compacts haftet, auf die sie aufgebracht wird. Weiterhin wurde gefunden, daß die
Legierung sich leicht mit einer Mannigfaltigkeit handelsüblicher Hartlote verbindet und eine mit der Matrix
herkömmlicher oberflächenbesetzter und imprägnierter Bohrer eine Hartlötverbindung bildet.
Die mit der Legierung beschichtete Oberfläche kann in einfacher Weise an einen Sintercarbid-Träger gebunden
werden, entweder direkt oder aber vermittels eines anderen handelsüblichen Hartlots. Wenn ein anderes
handelübliches Hartlot verwendet wird, ist dieses vorzugsweise ein Hochtemperatur-Hartlot, etwa ein
Silber/Kupfer/Zink/Nickel/Mangan-Lot oder ein Kupfer/Mangan/Nickel
/Indium/ Zinn-Lot, die beide Liquidus-Temperaturen oberhalb von 7000C aufweisen. Der Diamant-Compact,
der ja thermisch stabil ist, vermag diese Temperaturen auszuhalten, und die resultierende Lötverbindung
ist außergewöhnlich stark. Damit ermöglicht die vorliegende Erfindung, einen thermisch stabilen
Diamant-Compact mit einem Werkzeug oder Werkzeughalter
durch Hartlöten zu verbinden, im Gegensatz zu unbeschichteten, thermisch stabilen Diamant-Compacts, bei
denen dies bisher nach dem Stand der Technik nicht möglich war.

Die Legierung enthält vorzugsweise 40 bis 70 Gew.-% Gold oder Silber oder einer Kombination aus diesen.
Beispiele für geeignete Legierungen sind die folgenden:
1. Gold und das aktive Metall.
2. Eine das aktive Metall enthaltende binäre Silber/Kupfer-Legierung.
3. Eine das aktive Metall, insbesondere Titan, enthaltende ternäre Silber/Kupfer/Palladium-Legierung.
Die Dicke der Schicht aus der Legierung ist nicht kritisch; sie überschreitet im allgemeinen jedoch 200 μΐη
nicht.
Der thermisch stabile Diamant-Compact kann in Form kleiner Bruchstücke eingesetzt werden, die irgendeine
nützliche Form aufweisen, etwa diejenige eines Würfels, Dreiecks oder Sechsecks. Vorzugsweise ist bei solchen
Compacts die Legierungs-Schicht mit wenigstens 75 % ihrer Oberfläche verbunden.
Der thermisch stabile Diamant-Compact kann auch in Form einer Scheibe oder eines Segments einer Scheibe mit
jeweils einer ebenen Hauptfläche auf den gegenüberliegenden Seiten der Scheibe oder des Segments bereitgestellt
werden. Bei solchen Compacts ist die Schicht aus
der Legierung vorzugsweise an wenigstens eine dieser ebenen Hauptflächen gebunden. Die beschichtete ebene
Fläche kann mit einem Träger aus Sintercarbid verbunden werden.

Die Legierung kann mit der Oberfläche des Diamant-Compacts
dadurch verbunden werden, daß man die Fläche mit der Legierung, beispielsweise in Form einer Folie,
in Berührung bringt und danach die Temperatur des beschichteten Compacts in einer nicht-oxydierenden Atmosphäre
auf eine Temperatur oberhalb der Liquidustemperatur der Legierung erhöht. Ein Beispiel für eine geeignete
nicht-oxydierende Atmosphäre ist ein Vakuum von

10 mbar oder besser. Zur Verbesserung der Benetzbarkeit der Oberfläche des Diamant-Compacts wird vorzugsweise zunächst ein Überzug aus Gold oder Silber auf die Oberfläche des Compacts aufgebracht, bevor die Legierung mit diesem verbunden wird. Der Gold- oder Silber-Überzug hat im allgemeinen eine Dicke von nicht mehr als einigen wenigen [im. Eine Arbeitsweise zum Aufbringen des Gold- oder Silber-Überzugs vor dem Verbinden der Legierung mit der Oberfläche wird vollständig in der E-PS 0 104 063 beschrieben.

Der Gold- oder Silber-Überzug hat im allgemeinen eine Dicke von nicht mehr als einigen wenigen [im. Eine Arbeitsweise zum Aufbringen des Gold- oder Silber-Überzugs vor dem Verbinden der Legierung mit der Oberfläche wird vollständig in der E-PS 0 104 063 beschrieben.
Der thermisch stabile Diamant-Compact kann ein beliebiger,
in der Technik bekannter sein, ist jedoch vorzugsweise einer des. in der GB-Patentanmeldung 8 508 295
beschriebenen Typs.
Die Erfindung wird anhand der folgenden Beispiele näher beschrieben.
Ein Diamant-Compact in Scheibenform wurde mit Hilfe der
in der GB-Patentanmeldung 8 508 295 beschriebenen Verfahrensweise hergestellt. Der Compact bestand aus einer
Masse Diamant-Teilchen, die einen wesentlichen Grad an direkten Diamant-Diamant-Bindungen enthielt, wodurch
eine zusammenhängende Gerüst-Masse gebildet wurde, und einer zweiten, im wesentlichen aus Silicium in Form von
elementarem Silicium und Siliciumcarbid bestehenden Phase. Es handelte sich um einen thermisch stabilen
Diamant-Compact, wie er bereits im Vorstehenden beschrieben wurde.
Eine der ebenen Hauptflächen des Diamant-Compacts wurde
in Alkohol entfettet. Eine 100 μπι dicke Folie aus einer
Legierung auf Silber-Basis wurde auf die entfettete und geät2te Fläche des Diamant-Compacts gelegt. Die Legierung
auf Silber-Basis enthielt 62 % Silber, 19 % Kupfer, 14 % Palladium und 5 % Titan, wobei sämtliche Prozentzahlen
auf das Gewicht bezogen sind. Eine Scheibe aus Sinter-Wolframcarbid wurde auf die Folie aus der
Legierung gelegt, wodurch ein unverbundener Stapel gebildet wurde. Auf den unverbundenen Stapel wurde eine
Last von 50 bis 100 g einwirken gelassen. Der belastete Stapel wurde dann in einem Vakuum von besser als

10 mbar auf 11000C erhitzt und 10 min bei dieser Temperatur
gehalten. Der Stapel wurde auf Umgebungstemperatur abkühlen gelassen. Es wurde gefunden, daß eine
ausgezeichnete Verbindung zwischen dem thermisch stabilen Diamant-Compact und der Sintercarbid-Scheibe
erhalten worden war.
Ein in ähnlicher Weise gebundener Compact wurde mit Hilfe der gleichen Arbeitsweise, jedoch mit der Abweichung
erhalten, daß nach dem Entfetten ein Gold-Überzug (0,1 mm dick) auf die Compact-Fläche aufgebracht wurde.
Wiederum wurde eine ausgezeichnete Verbindung zwischen dem Compact und der Sintercarbid-Scheibe erhalten
Ein thermisch stabiler Diamant-Compact, wie er in Beispiel 1 beschrieben ist, besaß eine in Alkohol entfettete
ebene Hauptfläche. Auf diese entfettete und geätzte Hauptfläche wurde eine 100 μ,ΐη dicke Folie aus
der gleichen Silber/Kupfer/Palladium/Titan-Legierung aufgebracht. Der Compact und die Folie wurden in einem

Vakuum von besser als 10 mbar auf HOO0C erhitzt und 5 min bei dieser Temperatur gehalten. Der Compact wurde auf Umgebungstemperatur abgekühlt. Es wurde gefunden, daß die Legierung fest mit dem Diamant-Compact verbunden war, wodurch eine metallisierte Oberfläche erzeugt wurde.
Vakuum von besser als 10 mbar auf HOO0C erhitzt und 5 min bei dieser Temperatur gehalten. Der Compact wurde auf Umgebungstemperatur abgekühlt. Es wurde gefunden, daß die Legierung fest mit dem Diamant-Compact verbunden war, wodurch eine metallisierte Oberfläche erzeugt wurde.
Der metallisierte Compact wurde mit der metallisierten Oberfläche nach unten auf die Oberseite einer Scheibe
aus Sinter-Wolframcarbid gelegt. Zwischen die metallisierte
Oberfläche und die Sintarcarbid-Scheibe wurde eine 100 um dicke Scheibe aus Nicuman-36-Legierung
(56 Cu - 36 Mn - 2 Ni - 3 In - 3 Sn) mit einem Schmelzbereich von 7710C bis 8250C gelegt. Eine Last von etwa
50 bis 100 g wurde auf den unverbundenen Stapel aus Compact und Carbid zur Einwirkung gebracht.
Der Stapel wurde in einem Vakuum von besser als

10 mbar auf 10000C erhitzt und 10 min bei dieser Temperatur gehalten. Der Stapel wurde auf Umgebungstemperatur
abkühlen gelassen.
Es wurde gefunden, daß der Diamant-Compact fest mit der Sintercarbid-Scheibe verbunden war.
Ein thermisch stabiler Diamant-Compact, wie er in Beispiel 1 beschrieben ist, wurde in eine Anzahl Würfel
zerlegt. Die Würfel wurden in Alkohol entfettet. Dann wurde auf die sauberen Oberflächen der Würfel ein etwa
0,1 μΐη dicker Überzug aus Gold mit Hilfe üblicher Zerstäubungstechniken
aufgebracht.
Dann wurden sämtliche Flächen außer einer jedes Würfels mit einer Folie einer Legierung umhüllt, wie sie in
Beispiel 1 beschrieben ist. Die eingewickelten Würfel

wurden in einem Vakuum von 10 mbar auf 11000C erhitzt.
Hierdurch wurde die Legierung zum Schmelzen gebracht und fest mit jedem der Würfel verbunden. Der
Gold-Überzug trug zur Benetzung der Würfelflächen und zur Bindung der Legierung an diese Flächen bei. Es
wurde gefunden, daß die Legierung sehr fest mit den Würfeln verbunden war und die Bindung eine Scherfestigkeit
von mehr als 147 N/mm2 (15 kg/mm2) zeigte.
Claims (8)
1. Diamant-Compact aus einer polykristallinen Masse von Diamant-Teilchen, die in einer Menge von wenigstens
70 Vol.-% eingebunden in ein hartes Konglomerat vorliegen, wobei der Compact eine Temperatur von 12000C im
Vakuum ohne nennenswerten strukturellen Abbau desselben auszuhalten vermag, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der
Compact an eine seiner Oberflächen gebunden eine Schicht aus einer Legierung aufweist, die wenigstens
40 Gew.-% Silber oder Gold oder einer Kombination aus diesen und 1 bis 10 Gew.-% eines aktiven Metalls, ausgewählt
aus der aus Wolfram, Titan, Zirconium, Hafnium, Vanadium, Niob, Tantal, Chrom und Molybdän bestehenden
Gruppe, enthält und eine Liquidustemperatur oberhalb von 7000C aufweist.
2. Diamant-Compact nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Legierung 40 bis 70 Gew.-% Silber oder
Gold oder einer Kombination aus diesen enthält.

3. Diamant-Compact nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß die Legierung Silber, Kupfer, Palladium und Titan enthält.
4. Diamant-Compact nach irgendeinem der vorhergehenden
Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Dicke der Schicht aus der Legierung 200 \xm nicht überschreitet.
5. Diamant-Compact nach irgendeinem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Schicht aus
der Legierung an wenigstens 75 % der Oberfläche desselben gebunden ist.
6. Diamant-Compact nach Anspruch 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß er eine kubische, dreieckige oder hexagonale Gestalt besitzt.
7. Diamant-Compact nach irgendeinem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß er die Form einer Scheibe
oder eines Segments einer Scheibe mit jeweils einer ebenen Hauptfläche auf den gegenüberliegenden Seiten
der Scheibe oder des Segments besitzt und an wenigstens eine dieser ebenen Hauptflächen die Schicht aus der
Legierung gebunden ist.
8. Diamant-Compact nach Anspruch 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß ein Träger aus Sintercarbid vermittels der
Schicht aus der Legierung an eine seiner ebenen Hauptflächen gebunden ist.
