Abstract
933,921. Diamond tools. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 12, 1959 [Nov. 15, 1958], No. 38417/59. Class 124. In a method of manufacturing an article provided with a diamond, a diamond is degreased, introduced into a helical metal spring 3, which is closed at one end 4 and has a length greater than that of the diamond, into which a metal rod 2 is inserted to close the open end and make contact with the diamond, immersing the diamond-containing portion of the spring in molten solder, removing the closed end 4 of the spring, after cooling, by grinding, and grinding and polishing to shape the part of the diamond, thus exposed. After degreasing the diamond may next be superficially roughened by oxidation with heat. The metal rod 2 and the spring may be joined by spot-welding. The diamond may be formed as a cylindrical rod 1 by drilling from a larger diamond. The spring 3 and the rod 2 may be of Mo and/or W and the solder may be an alloy of Cu, Ag and Ti.
