Description
PRODUIT. COMPACT DIAMANTE. THERMOSTABLE
La présente invention concerne les produits com-
pacts à base de diamant et thermostables.
Les produits compacts abrasifs, fréquemment dénom-
m8s simplement "compacts" sont bien connus et largement utilisés dans l'industrie pour l'abrasion de diverses pièces. Ils sont essentiellement constitués d'une masse de particules abrasives dont la teneur est au moins de %, avantageusement 80 à 90 %, en volume du compact, liées pour constituer un conglomérat dur. Les compacts sont des
masses polycristallines et peuvent remplacer de gros mono-
cristaux. Les particules abrasives des compacts sont inva-
riablement des abrasifs ultra durs tels que le diamant et
le nitrure de bore cubique.
Les compacts abrasifs peuvent contenir une seconde
phase, ou matrice de liaison, qui contient un solvant, éga-
lement appelé catalyseur, utile pour la synthèse des parti-
cules. Dans le cas du diamant, -on peut citer, à titre d'ex-
emples de solvants appropriés, les métaux du groupe VIII de la table périodique, tels que le cobalt le nickel ou le fer, ou un alliage contenant un tel métal. La présence de ces solvants dans les compacts à base de diamant les rend sensibles à la chaleur, aux températures audessus de
700 C. En d'autres termes, il y a tendance à la dégrada-
tion du diamant aux températures dépassant 700"C. Cette
cause et la différence des coefficients de dilatation ther-
mique du diamant et du solvant provoquent une dégradation de structure du compact. Il en résulte que le compact est
notablement affaibli ou rendu inutilisable en temps qu'a-
brasif. '.
Le brevet U.S. no 4.224.380 décrit un procédé pour éliminer par lixiviation une quantité appréciable du solvant contenu dans un compact de diamant. Le produit résultant est en conséquence à peu près débarrassé de catalyseur et il est plus thermostable que le produit non lixivié. Un tel compact est capable de supporter des températures allant
jusqu'à 1200 C sous vide sansa dégradation de structure si-
gnificative du compact. Un tel compact est connu sous le
nom de thermostable.
D'autres compacts de diamant thermostables sont dé-
crits dans la littérature et utilisés commercialement. Le
brevet E P n0 0116403 décrit par exemple un compact de dia-
mant thermostable comprenant une masse de particules de diamant dont la teneur dans le produit est comprise entre et 90 % en volume et une seconde phase, dont la teneur dans le produit est de 10 à 20 % en volume. La masse de
particules de diamant présentant des liaisons diamant-
diamant notable constitue un squelette cohérent et la se-
conde phase contient du nickel et du silicium, le nickel étant sous forme de nickel et/ou de siliciure de nickel
tandis que le silicium est sous forme de silicium, de car-
bure de silicium et/ou de siliciure de nickel.
La demande de brevet G B n0 8508295 décrit en-
core un exemple de compact de diamant thermostable. Ce compact comprend une masse de particules de diamant dont
la teneur est comprise entre 80 et 90 % en volume du compact.
Une seconde phase est présente à une teneur allant de 10 à
% en volume du compact. La masse de particules de dia-
mant présente encore des liaisons notables diamant-diamant pour constituer un squelette cohérent. La seconde phase est constituée essentiellement de silicium, sous forme
de silicium élémentaire et/ou de carbure de silicium.
Le brevet E P nQ 0104063 décrit de son cOté un procédé pour fixer un compact de nitrure de bore cubique à un support en carbure cémenté. Suivant le procédé, on métallise une surface du compact de nitrure de bore cubique en faisant adhérer une couche d'or, d'argent ou d'alliage d'or ou d'argent à cette surface, puis on fait adhérer la
surface métallisée à une surface du support en carbure cé-
menté à l'aide d'un alliage de brasage ayant une tempéra-
ture de liquidus supérieure à 700 C. L'alliage de brasage préféré contient au moins 40 % en poids d'argent, d'or ou
d'une combinaison des deux, et 1.à 10 % en poids d'un m6-
tal actif appartenant au groupe constitué par le titanes
le zirconium, le hafnium, le vanadium, le niobium, le tan-
tale, le chrome et le moIybdenLa description de ce bre-
vet est limitée explicitement à la fixation d'un compact
de nitrure de bore cubique sur un support en carbure cé-
menté. On pourra se reporter aux indications des quatre
documents mentionnés ci-dessus pour compléter les indica-
tions qui vont suivre.
L'invention propose une masse polycristalline de
particules de diamant a une teneur d'au moins 70 % en vo-
lume liée sous forme d'un conglomérat dur et capable de
supporter une température de 1200 C sous vide sans dégra-
dation de structure significative du compact, ledit compact ayant une surface adhérant à une couche d'alliage qui
contient au moins 40% en poids d'argent, d'or ou d'une com-
binaison des deux et 1 a 10 % en poids d'un métal actif choisi dans le groupe constitué du tungstêne,du titane, du zirconium, du hafnium, du vanadium, du niobium, du tantale,
du chrome et du molybd neet ayant une température de liqui-
dus supérieure à 700 C.
Le compact de diamant est donc un compact thermosta-
ble dont des exemples sont donnés ci-dessus et bien connus
de l'homme de métier. Ces compacts sont capables de suppor-
ter une température de 1200 C sous vide, par exemple sous un vide de 10-5 millibar ou davantage,saps dégradation
de structure significative du compact. De tels compacts trou-
vent-uné application:impottante dans:les outils -d'abrasion
que-i'utilisatàon porte- hautes températures,rcéqme -par,.
exemple dans les outils de dressage ou de dégauchissage,
ou lorsque la fabrication de l'outil exige de hautes tem-
pératures, comme par exemple dans le cas d'embouts de fo-
rage fixés en surface ou imprégnês.
Comme on l'a indiqué ci-dessus, on utilise des compacts de diamant thermostables pour les applications o des températures élevées apparaissent lors de l'utilisation ou de la fabrication. Les brasures classiques ne mouillent pas aisément de tels compacts et c'est là une des raisons pour lesquelles ils sont en général fixés mécaniquement à la surface de travail de l'outil. Par exemple, dans un
embout de forage à fixation en surface, les compacts indivi-
duels, qui ont une forme triangulaire, cubique, hexagonale
ou autre appropriée, sont retenus mécaniquement dans la ma-
trice de la surface de travail de l'embout de forage. Il est souhaitable de compléter la fixation mécanique par une
liaison -chimique ou brasée.
On a constaté que l'alliage décrit ci-dessus adhère
de façon extrêmement forte à la surface du compact de dia-
mant auquel il est appliqué. De plus on a constaté que l'al-
liage adhère facilement à de nombreuses brasures disponibles
commercialement et constitue une liaison brasée avec la ma-
trice d'embouts de forage classiquesà fixation de surface
et imprégnés.
On peut aisément faire adhérer la surface revêtue d'alliage a un support en carbure cémenté, soit directement,
soit par une autre brasure d'un type disponible dans le com-
merce. Lorsqu'on utilise une autre brasure disponible dans
le commerce, il s'agit avantageusement d'une brasure à -
haute température telle qu'une brasure argent/cuivre/zinc/ nickel/manganèse ou d'une brasure cuivre/manganèse/nickel/
indium/étain qui l'une et l'autre ont une température de li-
quidus supérieure à 700 C. Le compact de diamant, étant thermostable,peut supporter de telles températures et la
liaison brasée résultante est extrêmement solide. L'inven-
tion permet donc de braser un compact de diamant thermos-
table à un outil ou à un porte-outil, contrairement à ce
qu'on pouvait faire avec les compacts de diamant thermos-
tables 'non revêtus de l'art antérieur.
L'alliage contient avantageusement 40 a 70 % en
poids d'or, d'argent ou d'une combinaison des deux. A ti-
tre d'exemples d'alliages appropriés on peut citer:
1. Or et métal actif.
2. Alliage binaire argent/cuivre contenant le métal actif.
3. Alliage ternaire argent/cuivre/pa]adium conte-
nant le métal actif, en particulier le titane.
L'épaisseur de la couche d'alliage n'est pas criti-
que. Elle ne dépassera généralement pas 200 microns.
Le compact de diamant thermostable est utilisable
sous forme de petits fragments ayant une quelconque de plu-
sieurs formes utilisées, telles que cube, triangle ou
hexagone. Pour de tels compacts, la couche d'alliage est avan-
tageusement fixée sur 75% au moins de la surface.
Le compact de diamant thermostable peut également
être réalisé sous forme d'un disque ou d'un segment de dis-
que ayant une grande surface plate sur chacune de ses faces opposées. Pour de tels compacts il est avantageux que la couche d'alliage adhère sur une au moins des deux grandes surfaces plates. On peut faire adhérer la surface plate
revêtue à un support en carbure cémenté.
On peut faire adhérer l'alliage a la surface du compact de diamant en mettant la surface en contact avec
l'alliage, par exemple sous forme d'une feuille,et en aug-
mentant la température du compact revêtu jusqu'à une tem-
pérature supérieure à la température de liquidus de l'al-
liage,en atmosphère non oxydante. Un vide de 10-4 millibar
ou davantage constitue un exemple d'atmosphère non oxy-
dante appropriée. Pour améliorer la mouillabilité de la sur-
face du compact de diamant, il est avantageux d'appliquer un revêtement éclair d'or ou d'argent sur la surface du compact avant d'y faire adhérer l'alliage. Le revêtement
mince d'or ou d'argent - aura généralement une épais-
seur ne dépassant pas quelques microns. Le brevet E P
n 0 O104 063 décrit une méthode pour appliquer un tel revé-
tement d'or ou d'argent avant de faire adhérer l'alliage à
la surface.
Le compact de diamant thermostable peut être l'un
quelconque de ceux qui sont connus, bien qu'il soit avan-
tageusement du type décrit dans la demande de brevet G B
n 8508295.
On décrira maintenant, à titre non limitatif, des
exemples particuliers de mise en oeuvre de l'invention.
Exemple 1
On a réalisé un compact de diamant en forme de dis-
que en utilisant la méthode décrite dans la demande de bre-
vet GB n 8508295. Le compact était constitué
d'une masse de particules de diamant présentant une quanti-
té notable de liaisonsdiamant-diamant formant un squelette et d'une secondephaseconstituée essentiellement de silicium
sous forme de silicium élémentaire et de carbure de sili-
cium. Le compact était thermostable, du genre défini plus haut. On a dégraissé à l'alcool une grande surface plate du compact de diamant. On a appliqué une feuille d'alliage à base d'argent de 100 microns d'épaisseur sur la surface dégraissée et décapée du compact de diamant. L'alliage à base d'argent contenait 62 % d'argent, 19 % de cuivre, 14 % de Dalladium et 5 % de titane en poids. On a placé un disque de carbure de tungstène cémenté sur la feuille d'alliage pour constituer un empilement non adhèrent. On a appliqué sur l'empilement non adhérent une charge de 50 à gammes. Puis on a chauffé l'empilement sous charge dans un vide dépassant 10-4 millibar jusqu'à 1100lC et on a maintenu cette température pendant 10 minutes. Puis on a
laissé l'empilement se refroidir à la température ambiante.
On a constaté l'existence d'une liaison excellente entre le compact de diamant thermostable et le disque de carbure cémenté. On a produit un compact ayant une liaison similaireen

utilisant la nême procédure, mais avec un revêtement éclair de.0,1 umm d'épaisseur d'or appliqué sur le compact apres dégraissage. On a encore obtenu une excellente liaison entre
le compact et le disque de carbure cémenté.
Exelple 2 On a dégraissé à l'alcool une des grandes surfaces plates d'un compact de diamant thermostable tel que décrit dans l'exemple 1. On a appliqué sur la surface dégraissée et décapée une feuille de 100 microns d'épaisseur du même alliage argent/cuivre/palladium/titane. On a chauffé le compact et la feuille à 1100 C sous vide dépassant!0-4 millibar et on les a maintenus à cette température pendant minutes. On a laissé le compact se refroidir à tempêra- ture ambiante. On a constaté que l'alliage adhérait fortement
au compact de diamant en produisant une surface métallisée.
Le compact métallisé a été placé sur un disque de carbure de tungstène cémenté, la face métallisée dirigée
vers le bas. On a place, entre la face métallisée et le dis-
que de carbure cémenté, un disque de 100 microns d'épais-
seur en alliage "Nicuman 36" (56Cu - 36Mn - 2 Ni -
3 In - 3Sn) dont le point de fusion va de 771 à 825"C.
On a appliqué une charge d'environ 50 à 100 grammes sur
l'empilement non adhérent compact-carbure.
On a alors chauffé l'empilement jusqu'à 10001C sous un vide d'air dépassant 104 millibar et on l'a maintenu à cette température pendant 10 minutes. Puis on a laissé
l'empilement se refroidir jusqu' la température ambiante.
On a constaté que le compact de diamant présentait-une liaison énergique avec le disque de carbure cémentéo Exemple 3 On a fragmenté un compact de diamant thermostable du genre décrit dans l'exemple 1 en plusieurs cubes. On a dégraissé les cubes à l'alcool. On a appliqué ensuite sur
les surfaces nettoyées des cubes un revêtement éclair, d'en-
viron 0,1 micron d'épaisseur, d'or en utilisant les techni-
ques classiques de revêtement par pulvérisation.
Toutes les surfaces de chaque Gube,sauf une,ont alors été enveloppées dans une feuille de l'alliage décrit
dans l'exemple 1. On a chauffé les cubes enveloppés jus-
qu'à une température de 1100 C dans un vide de 10-4 milli-
bar;. ce qui a causé la fusion de l'alliage et son.adhésion énergique à chaque cube. Le revêtement éclair d'or a aidé
à mouiller les surfaces des cubes et à faire adhérer l'al-
liage à ces surfaces. On a constaté que l'alliage avait une liaison énergique avec les cubes et une résistance au cisaillement dépassant 15 Kg /mm2
Claims (1)
- REVENDICATIONSL..Compact de diamant comprenant une masse polycris-talline de particules de diamant à une teneur d'au moins 70 % en volume liée sous forme d'unDconglomérat dur et capable de supporter une température de 12000 C sous vide sans dégradation de structure significative du compact, caractérisé en ce que le compact a une surface adhérant à une couche d'alliage quicontient au moins 40% en poids d'argent, d:'or-ou d'une com-binaison des deux et 1 à 10 % en poids d'un métal actif choisi dans le groupe constitué du tungstène, du titane, du zirconium, du hafnium, du vanadium, du niobium, du tantale,du chrome et du molybdêneet ayant une température de liqui-dus supérieure à 700 C.2.Compact de diamant suivant la revendication 1, ca-ractérisé en ce que l'alliage contient 40 à 70 % en poidsd'argent, d'or ou de combinaison des deux.3.Compact de diamant suivant la revendication 1 ou 2, caractérisé en ce que l'alliage contient de l'argent, ducuivre, du palladium et du titane.4.Compact de diamant suivant l'une quelconque des re-vendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que la couched'alliage à une épaisseur qui ne dépasse pas 200 microns.5.Compact de diamant suivant l'une quelconque des re-vendications précédentes, caractérisé-en ce que la couched'alliage adhère sur au moins 75 % de sa surface.6.Compact de diamant suivant la revendication 5, ca-ractérisé en ce qu'il a une forme cubique, triangulaire ouhexagonale.7.Compact de diamant suivant l'une quelconque des re-vendications 1 à 4, caractérisé en ce que le compact est enforme de disque ou de segment de disque avec une grande sur-face plate sur chacune de ses faces opposées, la couched'alliage adhérant à l'une au moins des grandes surfa-ces plates.8.Compact de diamant suivant la revendication 7, carac-térisé en ce qu'un support en carbure cémenté adhère à unegrande surface plate par l'intermédiaire de la couche d'al-liage.
