Abstract

891,403. Brazing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 10, 1960 [May 12, 1959], No. 16219/59. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIII] In a cutting or abrading tool of the kind in which the cutting edge or abrading surface consists of particles of an abrasive material bonded to a supporting body, at least the part of the body which supports the abrasive particles consists wholly or mainly of titanium and/or zirconium and the particles are bonded to it by a brazing medium consisting of a metal alloy containing titanium and/or zirconium. The abrasive particles may consist of diamond, alumina or carbides, nitrides or borides of sufficient hardness. That part of the body which supports the abrasive particles preferably consists wholly of titanium and/or zirconium but it may consist of an alloy of one or both of these metals with a minor proportion of one or more other metals. The brazing medium by which the abrasive particles are bonded to the body is an alloy which contains titanium and/or zirconium and one or more other constituents, preferably chosen from silver, copper, gold and nickel. The titanium and/or zirconium content of the brazing medium is preferably derived by solution from the particle-supporting surface during the brazing using an initial brazing material consisting of the other constituent or constituents of the brazing alloy. The brazing is carried out in a vacuum or in an inert atmosphere. The main body of a cutting wheel consists of a circular disc of titanium tapering to a knife edge at its periphery and having a central hole. To one side of the disc is spot-welded concentrically an annulus of copper foil. The disc is placed on its side, foil uppermost, and the foil covered by a layer of alumina particles 50-100 mesh. The assembly is heated in vacuo to about 950‹ C. to effect bonding and allowed to cool in vacuo. The other side of the disc then has alumina particles bonded thereto in the same way. In a second embodiment the periphery of a thin titanium disc is coated with a mixture of diamond powder and powdered silver-copper eutectic in a volatile binder, e.g. alcohol. The coated disc is heated in vacuo to about 950‹ C. to effect bonding and allowed to cool in vacuo. In a third embodiment an annulus of nickel foil is spot-welded to one side of a circular disc of titanium tapering to a knife edge at its periphery and having a central hole. The disc is placed on its side, foil uppermost and the foil covered by a layer of diamond particles in a polymethylmethacrylate binder. The assembly is heated in vacuo to 1100‹ C. to disperse the binder and effect bonding and allowed to cool in vacuo. The other side of the disc then has diamond particles bonded thereto in the same way.
