Description
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft (trans-4-
Alkylcyclohexyl)äthane der allgemeinen Formel
worin R² eine der Gruppen -R³, -OR³, -CO-R³, -CO-OR³
der obigen Formel I, flüssigkristalline Mischungen,
welche solche Verbindungen enthalten, sowie die Verwendung
in elektro-optischen Vorrichtungen.
Der obige Ausdruck "geradkettige Alkylgruppe" umfaßt
die Gruppen Methyl, Äthyl, Propyl, Butyl, Pentyl, Hexyl,
Heptyl, Octyl, Nonyl, Decyl, Undecyl und Dodecyl.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Verbindungen sind besonders wertvoll
als Komponenten von flüssigkristallinen Mischungen und
besitzen zum größten Teil selbst flüssigkristalline
(nematische und/oder smektische) Eigenschaften.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Verbindungen sind mit allen
bekannten Flüssigkristallen mischbar und können in allen
gebräuchlichen elektro-optischen Vorrichtungen verwendet
werden, wobei die Auswahl der Mischungskomponenten im
allgemeinen vom speziellen Verwendungszweck abhängt. Vorzugsweise
werden die erfindungsgemäßen Verbindungen jedoch
zur Herstellung nematischer und cholesterischer Mischungen
mit positiver Anisotropie der Dielektrizitätskonstanten
(ε ∥<ε ⟂, wobei ε ∥ die Dielektrizitätskonstante entlang der
Moleküllängsachse und ε ⟂ die Dielektrizitätskonstante senkrecht
dazu bedeuten) verwendet.
und L. A. Zanoni [Applied Physics Letters 13, 91 (1968)]
bzw. von D. L. White und G. N. Taylor [J. Appl. Phys. 45,
4718 (1974)] beschriebenen Wechselwirkung zwischen eingelagerten
Molekülen und den flüssigkristallinen Molekülen
(Guest-Host interaction) ausgenützt. Eine weitere interessante
Anwendung der dielektrischen Feldvorrichtung liegt in
der von M. Schadt und W. Helfrich [Applied Physics Letters
18, 127 (1971)] gefundenen Drehzelle sowie bei der in Molecular
Crystals and Liquid Crystals 17, 355 (1972) beschriebenen
oder -CO-OR³ bedeutet. Besonders bevorzugt sind diejenigen
Verbindungen der Formel I, worin R² eine Alkylgruppe
-R³ oder eine Alkoxygruppe -OR³ darstellt. Weiterhin
sind diejenigen Verbindungen der Formel I bevorzugt,
worin n für die Zahl 1 steht. Die Reste R³ bedeuten vorzugsweise
geradkettige Alkylgruppen mit 1 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen
und insbesondere geradkettige Alkylgruppen mit
1 bis 7 Kohlenstoffatomen. Ferner sind die Reste R¹ mit 2
bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen bevorzugt und solche mit 3 bis 7
Kohlenstoffatomen besonders bevorzugt.

in diesem Falle Endprodukte).

enthalten.
in Z. Naturforsch. 34b, 1535 (1979) und in Mol. Cryst. Liq.
Cryst. 37, 189 (1976) bzw. 42, 215 (1977) beschrieben.
In
diesen Schemata haben A, R und R′ die oben gegebenen Bedeutungen;
Gruppen -CH₂R, -OR, -OR″, -CH₂OR oder -CH₂OR″; R²⁶ bezeichnet
erhaltene optisch aktive Salz hydrolysiert.

Eigenschaften besitzt.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Mischungen können ferner optisch
aktive Verbindungen, beispielsweise optisch aktive Biphenyle,
und/oder dichroitische Farbstoffe, beispielsweise
Azo-, Azoxy- und Anthrachinon-Farbstoffe, enthalten. Der
Anteil solcher Verbindungen wird durch die Löslichkeit
und die gewünschte Ganghöhe, Farbe, Extinktion
bestimmt.

(C-N) 18°C bzw.
27°C (2 Modifikationen), Umwandlung SB-N 8°C (monotrop),
Klp. (N-I) 47°C.
Man erhält 9,7 g
rohres, öliges 4-Äthoxy-α-(trans-4-pentylcyclohexyl)acetophenon.
In analoger Weise können folgende Verbindungen hergestellt
werden:
2-(trans-4-Äthylcyclohexyl)-1-(p-äthoxyphenyl)äthan;
Smp. (C-I) 20,5°C, Klp. (SB-I) 3°C (monotrop).
2-(trans-4-Äthylcyclohexyl)-1-(p-butyloxyphenyl)äthan; Smp. (C-I) 4°C, Umwandlung SB-N 0°C (monotrop), Klp. (N-I) 6,5°C.
2-(trans-4-Äthylcyclohexyl)-1-(p-hexyloxyphenyl)äthan; Smp. (C-I) 10°C, Umwandlung SB-N 1°C (monotrop), Klp. (N-I) 13°C.
