Verfahren zur Herstellung von Äthanol
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Äthanol aus Methanol, Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff
unter Anwendung eines neuen Katalysators.
Zur Herstellung von Äthanol aus Methanol, Kohlenmonoxid
und Wasserstoff ist es "bekannt H: ein lösliches
Kobaltsalz oder eine Eutheniumverbindung oder Osmiumverbindung als Hauptkatalysator in Kombination mit
Jod, Brom oder einer Verbindung davon zu verwenden und darüber hinaus mit oder ohne eine Phosphorverbindung,
und derartige bekannte zusammengesetzte Katalysatoren
werden alle als ein homogenes System verwendet.
Die Verwendung derartiger üblicher Katalysatorsysteme für Reaktionen zur Herstellung von Äthanol geben zwar
in manchen Fällen eine relativ hohe Selektivität für das angestrebte Material Äthanol, jedoch bringt sie
verschiedene Probleme für die industrielle Anwendung mit sich, wie sie nachstehend erwähnt werden.
Da die kombinierte Anwendung von Elementen wie Jod oder Brom für die üblichen Katalysatorsysteme unerläßlich
ist, muß ein hoch-korrosionsbeständiges kostspieliges Material für die Vorrichtung verwendet werden;
auch ist ein kompliziertes Verfahren zur Wiedergewinnung des Katalysators notwendig. Da darüber hinaus
die katalytisch wirksamen Komponenten instabil sind, treten bei der Wiedergewinnung der Katalysatoren
große Verluste auf und es ist kaum möglich, den Katalysator unter Erhaltung der aktiven Komponenten
wiederzugewinnen. Daher ist es zur Wiederverwendung' des wiedergewonnenen Katalysators erforderlich, den
Katalysator neu herzustellen oder den verlorenen Anteil frisch zuzuführen. Somit erfordert ein Verfahren
zur Herstellung von Äthanol unter Anwendung der üblichen Katalysatorsysteme hohe Katalysatorkosten und
kann kaum als praktisches Verfahren für die gewerbliehe Herstellung von Äthanol angesehen werden.
In der US-Patentanmeldung SN 144,990 wird ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Äthanol auf der Basis der
Verwendung von zumindest Kobaltsulfid als ein Kobaltkatalysator empfohlen. Jedoch wurde gefunden, daß das
Verfahren den Nachteil aufweist, daß die Wiedergewinnung des Katalysators schwierig durchzuführen ist,
da ein gewisser Teil des Katalysators kolloidal wird und das Produkt Äthanol einen unangenehmen Geruch auf«
SQ weist, der von Thiocarbonyl zu stammen scheint.
Als Ergebnis weiterer Untersuchungen zur Vermeidung der verschiedenen Probleme des Stands der Technik
wurde im Eahmen der Erfindung gefunden, daß es bei Verwendung von Kobalt phosphat als Hauptkatalysator
möglich ist, Äthanol synthetisch mit hoher Selektivität herzustellen, ohne daß es notwendig ist, Jod,
Brom usw. kombiniert zu verwenden und die Erfindung
basiert hierauf.

Somit wird durch die Erfindung ein Verfahren zur Herstellung
von Äthanol aus Methanol, Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff bereitgestellt, das gekennzeichnet ist
durch die Verwendung von Kobaltphosphat als-Hauptkatalysator in Kombination mit einem Element der
Platingruppe als Cokatalysator, oder ohne Anwendung eines derartigen Cokatalysators und darüber hinaus
mit oder ohne eine Phosphorverbindung, wobei der Katalysator als ein heterogenes System verwendet wird.
Das erfindungsgemäß verwendete Kobaltphosphat kann
entweder ein Anhydrid ι nii ι iii vn1 Tm ein Hydrat
sein und ein derartiges Kobaltphosphat wird im unlöslichen Zustand verwendet. Insbesondere kann es in
pulverförmiger! Zustand, dispergiert in dem Reaktionssystem
verwendet werden, oder kann es als gepackte Schicht durch Formen des Materials zu einer geeigneten
Größe verwendet werden. Es kann auch in einem von einem Träger wie Aktivkohle, Siliziumdioxid,
Aluminiumoxid, Diatomeenerde und Zeolith, getragenen Zustand verwendet werden.
Erfindungsgemäß kann ein Element der Platingruppe (5. und 6. Periode der Gruppe YlII des Periodensystems)
als Cokatalysator Verwendet werden. Derartige Elemente der Platingruppe sind Ruthenium,. Rhodium, Palladium,
Osmium, Iridium und Platin, jedoch sind Ruthenium, Rhodium und Palladium (5· Periode der Gruppe VIII)
bevorzugt. Die Verwendung eines derartigen Cokatalysators kann die Mebenproduktion sauerstoffhaltiger
Verbindungen, die sich von Äthanol unterscheiden, steuern. Bei der Verwendung der Elemente als Cokatalysator
kann jede geeignete Form genommen werden, vorausgesetzt, daß der Cokatalysator in dem Reaktionssystem unlöslich ist. Beispielsweise können diese

Elemente in der Form von Oxiden, Chloriden oder
Fluoriden oder als Katalysatorkomponenten, getragen von einem Träger, wie Aktivkohle, verwendet werden.'
Insbesondere sind Oxide, Chloride und auf Träger befindliches Metall bevorzugt.
Die Erfindung kann entweder nach einer kontinuierlichen oder nach einer ansatzweisen Methode durchgeführt
werden unter Verwendung eines Festbetts, fluidisierten Betts bzw. Wirbelschichtbetts oder
bewegten Betts.
Die verwendete Katalysatormenge ist nicht kritisch im Falle einer kontinuierlichen Verfahrensweise unter
Verwendung eines Festbetts, jedoch wird sie in anderen Fällen wie folgt definiert.
Die Menge des als Katalysator verwendeten Kobaltphosphats ist zwar je nach der angewendeten Verfahrensweise
variabel, liegt jedoch praktisch bei 0,1 bis 500 Milliatomen, berechnet als metallisches
Kobalt, pro Mol Methanol. Wenn die Menge des Kobaltphosphate weniger als der vorstehende Bereich ist,
kann die Reaktion zwar erfolgen, jedoch ist die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit niedrig. Die Verwendung von
Kobaltphosphat in größerer Menge bewirkt keinen nachteiligen Effekt auf die Reaktion, jedoch genügt
praktisch der vorstehend definierte Bereich für die beabsichtigte Reaktion. Der bevorzugte Bereich liegt
bei 1 bis 200 Milliatomen.
Die Menge des verwendeten Cokatalysators unterliegt keiner speziellen Einschränkung, jedoch wird er praktisch
in einer Menge von 0,01 bis 50 Milliatomen, vorzugsweise 0,1 bis 20 Milliatome, berechnet als
Metall pro Mol Methanol, eingesetzt. Die Wirkung der
Anwendung des Cokatalysators wird in diesem Mengen-
bereich gut entfaltet. ■

Das Verhältnis von Hauptkatalysator zu Cokatalysator I
ist auf keinen speziellen Bereich begrenzt, sondern ' !
es kann jegliches geeignete Verhältnis gewählt wer- ^ den, das die vorstehenden Bereiche der jeweiligen
Katalysatoren befriedigt. Dieses Verhältnis kann auf die Katalysatoren angewendet werden, die als gepackte
Schicht in einer kontinuierlichen Ifestbettmethode
verwendet werden.
Darüber hinaus kann erfindungsgemäß die katalytisch^
Wirksamkeit erhöht werden durch Einarbeiten einer
Phosphorverbindung in das Katalysatorsystem. Als derartige Phosphorverbindung ist Alkylphosphin oder
Phosphinoxid am wirksamsten. Die Henge einer derartigen, verwendeten Phosphorverbindung ist zwar nicht
speziell definiert, sie liegt jedoch praktisch bei
0,1 bis 200 mMol, vorzugsweise 1 bis 50 mMol pro Mol
• Methanol.
Erfindungsgemäß kann ein Reaktionsmedium, verwendet
werden oder auch nicht. Jegliches geeignetes Material kann als Reaktionsmedium erfindungsgemäß verwendet
werden, vorausgesetzt, daß dieses Material den Katalysator nicht löst, jedoch wird gewöhnlich ein organisches
Lösungsmittel verwendet. Beispiele für die bevorzugten Reaktionsmedien zur Anwendung bei der
Erfindung sind Kohlenwasserstoffe wie Hexan, Octan, Cyclohexan, Benzol und Toluol; sauerstoffhaltige
Verbindungen wie Methylacetat, Dioxan und Tetrahydrofuran;
Formamide, Acetamide, Pyrrolidone, Acetonitrile und Amine, wie Pyridin und Lutidin. Unter diesen ist
Methylacetat am bevorzugtesten. Ein Gemisch der organischen Lösungsmittel kann als Reaktionsmedium

verwendet werden. Die Menge des verwendeten Reaktionsmediums unterliegt keiner speziellen Begrenzung, je-
· doch wird es praktisch in einer Menge von 0,01 bis ' 5 Mol, vorzugsweise 0,05 bis 1 Mol pro Mol Methanol'
verwendet.
Die Heaktioasbedingungen der Erfindung können solche
sein, wie sie üblicherweise für diesen Reaktionstyp angewendet werden. Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff können
in einer stöchiometrischen Menge oder größer gegenüber Methanol verwendet werden. Das Kohlendioxid:
Wasserstoff-Molverhältnis liegt im Bereich von 4:1 bis 1:4, vorzugsweise 2:1 bis 1:2. Es kann jeglicher
Reaktionsdruck, von nicht über 588 "bar (600 kg/cm )
erfindungsgemäß angewendet werden, jedoch liegt er vorzugsweise bei 49 bar (50 kg/cm ) oder höher und
praktisch ist der Bereich von 147 bis 441 bar (150 bis 450 kg/cm ) am bevorzugtesten.
Sowohl Kohlenmonoxid als auch Wasserstoff, die für die erfindungsgemäße Reaktion verwendet werden, können
mit einem inerten Gas vermischt werden, wie Argon, Stickstoff, Kohlendioxid, Methan oder Ä'than, jedoch
muß in diesem Falle der Partialdruck von Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff derart eingestellt werden, daß
die Summe davon dem vorstehend definierten Druckbereich entspricht.
Die Reaktionstemperatur kann mit dem verwendeten Katalysatorsystem und den anderen Reaktionsbedingungen
variieren, liegt jedoch gewöhnlich im Bereich von 150 bis 35O 0C, vorzugsweise von 180 bis 280 0C. Die
Reaktion kann bei einer Temperatur unter 150 0C fortschreiten,
jedoch ist die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit gering. Die Verwendung einer Temperatur über 350 °(
neigt zur Bewirkung ungünstiger Nebenreaktionen.
Das erf indungs gemäße Verfahren kann die Bildung von
Nebenprodukten auf ein Minimum herabsetzen und führt zu freiem Äthanol mit hoher Selektivität und der
verwendete Katalysator kann mittels eines einfachen Piltriervorgangs abgetrennt und wiedergewonnen werden.
Der wiedergewonnene Katalysator kann erneut verwendet werden. Auch ist der Wiedergewinnungsverlust
gering. Somit ist das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren zur
Herstellung von Äthanol sehr brauchbar und vorteilhaft für industrielle Anwendungszwecke.
Die folgenden Beispiele dienen zur weiteren Erläuterung der Erfindung anhand von verschiedenen Ausführungsformen.
15 g Methanol und 3 g Kobaltphosphatpulver 5^2
8H2O] als Katalysator (auch in den folgenden Beispielen
wurde CO5(PO^)2.8H2O als Kobaltphosphat verwendet)vin
einen rostfreien Autoklaven vom Schütteltyp mit einem Passungsvermögen von 100 ml gefüllt, worauf
unter Druck ein Gasgemisch von Wasserstoff und
Kohlenmonoxid (Hp/CO-Molverhältnis = 1) mit einem
Druck von 196 bar (200 kg/cm ) beschickt wurde, um
die Reaktion während 3 Stunden bei 250 0C durchzuführen.
Die Methanolumwandlung betrug 8,6 Mol-% und die Selektivität
für Äthanol betrug 89,2 %.
Beispiel 2

15 g Methanol und 5 g Methylacetat als Reaktionsmedium wurden in den genannten Autoklaventyp beschickt
unter Verwendung des gleichen Katalysators in der
gleichen Menge wie in Beispiel 1 verwendet und es wurde unter den gleichen Bedingungen wie in Bei-■
spiel 1 umgesetzt.
Die Methanolumwandlung betrug 12,0 Mol-% und die
Selektivität für Äthanol betrug 90,3 %.
10 g Methanol, 3 g Kobaltphosphat und 1 g
Ruthenium-auf-Aktivkohle (Ru-C) mit einem Gehalt
von 5 % Ruthenium und 1 g Tributylphosphin als Katalysator
und 2 g Methylacetat wurden in den genannten Autoklaventyp gefüllt und unter den gleichen Bedingungen
wie in Beispiel 1 umgesetzt.
Die Methanolumwandlung betrug 16,2 Mol-% und die
Selektivität für Äthanol betrug 92,0 %.
Beispiel 4-
'<
10 g Methanol, 2 g Kobaltphosphat und 2 g Tributylphosphin
als Katalysator, 4 g H-Methyl-2-pyrrolidon
und 2 g Methylacetat wurden zugesetzt und unter den gleichen Bedingungen wie in Beispiel 1 umgesetzt.
Die Methanolumwandlung betrug 14,4 Mol-% und die
Selektivität für Äthanol betrug 88,0 %.
3 g Kobaltphosphat und 1 g Palladium-auf-Aktivkohle
(Pd-C) mit einem Palladiumgehalt von 5 % als Katalysator
wurden zu 10 g Methanol gefügt, gefolgt vom weiteren Zusatz von 5 g n-0ctan und 2 g Methylacetat
als Reaktionsmedium und es wurde unter den gleichen
Bedingungen wie in Beispiel 1 umgesetzt. Die Methanolumwandlung
"betrug 15,0 Mol-% und die Selektivität
für Äthanol betrug 91,1 %.
3 g Kobaltphosphat und 1 g Ehodium-auf-Äktivkohle
(Eh-C) mit einem Ehodiumgehalt von 5 % als Katalysator
wurden zu 10 g Methanol gefügt, gefolgt vom weiteren
Zusatz von 5 S Tetrahydrofuran als Eeaktionsmedium
und ein Gasgemisch von Wasserstoff und Kohlenmonoxid (Ho/CO-Molverhältnis = 1) wurde bei einem
Druck von 196 bar (200 kg/cm ) beschickt und es wurde
3 Stunden bei 220 0C umgesetzt.
Die Methanolumwandlung betrug 12,5 Mo1-% und die
Selektivität für Äthanol betrug 84·,Ό %.

Claims (16)
- PatentansprücheI1.J Verfahren zur Herstellung von Äthanol aus Methanol, Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man Kobaltphosphat als Hauptkatalysator in Kombination mit einem Element der Platingruppe als Cokatalysator oder ohne Verwendung eines derartigen Cokatalysators und darüber hinaus mit oder ohne eine Phosphorverbindung verwendet, wobei der Katalysator als heterogenes System verwendet wird.
- 2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man alo Element der Platingruppe aln Cokat.nl ynator Ru,Rh, Pd, Os, Ir oder Pt verwendet.
- 3· Verfahren nach Anspruch Λ oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man als Element der Platingruppe als Cokatalysator ein Element der Gruppe VIII, Periode V des Periodensystems, verwendet.
- 4-. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, 2 oder 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man das Element der Platingruppe als Cokatalysator in der Eorm von Oxiden, Chloriden oder Fluoriden verwendet.
- 5. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, 2 oder J, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man das Element der Platingruppe als Cokatalysator getragen auf einem Träger verwendet.
- 6. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, 2, 3» 4- oder 5» dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Reaktion kontinuierlich oder ansatzweise in einem Festbett, fluidisierten 'Bett bzw. Wirbelschichtbett oder bewegten Bett durchführt.
- .7· Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder einem der Ansprüche 2 bis 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man das Kobaltphosphat in einer Menge von 0,1 bis 500 Milliatome als metallisches Kobalt pro Mol Methanol verwendet.
- 8. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder einem der Ansprüche 2 bis 7» dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man den'Cokatalysator in einer Menge von 0,01 bis 50 Milliatome als Metall pro Mol Methanol verwendet.
- 9. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder einem der Ansprüche 2 bis 8, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man als Phosphorverbindung Alkylphosphin oder Phosphinoxid verwendet.
- 10. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder 9 oder einem der übrigen vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man 0,1 "bis 200 Millimol derPhosphorverbindung pro Mol Methanol verwendet.
- 11. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder einem der Ansprüche 2 bis 10, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man ein Eeaktionsmedium verwendet.
- 12. Verfahren nach Anspruch 11, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man als Eeaktionsmedium Kohlenwasserstoffe, sauerstoffhaltige Verbindungen, Formamide, Pyrrolidone, Acetonitrile oder Amine verwendet.
- 13. Verfahren nach Anspruch 11 oder 12, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man 0,01 bis 5 Mol des Eeaktionsmediums pro Mol Methanol verwendet.
- 14-. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder einem der Ansprüche 2! bis 13, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man ein Molverhältnis von Kohlenmonoxid zu Wasserstoff von 4:1 bis 1:4· verwendet.
25 - 15· Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder einem der Ansprüche 2 bis 14-, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Eeaktion bei einem Druck von 588 bar (600 kg/cm )oder weniger durchführt.
30 - 16. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder einem der Ansprüche 2 bis 15» dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Eeaktion bei einer Temperatur von I50 bis 350 Cdurchführt.
