Description
Photopolymerisierbare Massen auf der Basis kationisch oder
radikalisch polymerisierbare Monomeren mit einem Gehalt an
einem aromatischen Sulfoniumsalz als Photoinitiator sind in
der DE-OS 25 41 709 vorgeschlagen.
Sulfoniumsalze absorbieren UV-Licht nur im Wellenlängenbe
reich unterhalb etwa 320 nm und ihr Absorptionsspektrum
wird vom jeweiligen Anion praktisch nicht beeinflußt. Diese
spezifische Spektralempfindlichkeit hat zur Folge, daß
sie nur beschränkt als Photoinitiatoren in photopolymerisierbaren
Massen verwendbar sind. Im graphischen Bereich, etwa
bei der Herstellung von Druckplatten, ordnet man z. B. ein
photographisches Filmnegativ zwischen der Lichtquelle und der
lichtempfindlichen Platte an. Dieses Filmnegativ ist jedoch
für Licht mit einer Wellenlänge unterhalb etwa 340 nm praktisch
undurchlässig. Auch bei der Verwendung von photopoly
merisierbaren Massen zur Herstellung von lichthärtbaren Über
zügen nimmt die Intensität von Licht mit einer Wellenlänge
unterhalb von 300 nm aufgrund der Absorption durch die im
Überzug enthaltenen monomeren Verbindungen und Bindemittel
beim Durchtritt durch den Überzug ab.
Obwohl zahlreiche Farbstoffe und andere Materialien bekannt
sind, die eine Verarbeitung der Spektralempfindlichkeit von
photopolymerisierbaren Massen ermöglichen, war bisher nicht be
kannt und vorhersehbar, welche dieser Materialien zur Sen
sibilisierung von aromatischen Sulfoniumsalzen geeignet sind.
Es hat sich vielmehr gezeigt, daß die bekannte und viel ver
wendete Klasse von Triplett-Sensibilisatoren, wie Benzophenon
und Acetonphenon, keine nennenswerte Sensibilisierung von aro
matischen Sulfoniumsalzen bewirken.
Aufgabe der Erfindung ist es, photopolymerisierbare Massen
auf der Basis kationisch oder radikalisch polymerisierbarer
Monomeren bereitzustellen, die sich durch eine hohe Geschwindig
keit der Polymerisation bzw. Aushärtung auszeichnen und die
Anwendung sicherer und weniger kostspieliger Belichtungs
lampen ermöglichen.
Zur Lösung dieser Aufgabe eignet sich der in den Patenan
sprüchen gekennzeichnete Gegenstand.
Aus J. Polymer Science, Polymer Chemistry Edition, Vol. 13
(1975), Seiten 2671-2690, ist die Verwendung von verschiedenen
polycyclischen aromatischen Verbindungen als Photo
initiatoren bei der Polymerisation von Acrylnitril bekannt.
Ferner ist aus der DE-OS 20 59 034 die Verwendung aliphatischer
oder aromatischer Sulfone sowie eines im Licht redu
zierbaren Farbstoffs bei der Polymerisation von äthylenisch
ungesättigten polymerisierbaren Verbindungen bekannt.
Sulfone (Oxidationsstufe +5) sind nicht vergleichbar mit
den erfindungsgemäß verwendeten Sulfoniumverbindungen (Oxi
dationsstufe +3).
Die im Licht reduzierbaren Farbstoffe sind nicht vergleich
bar den erfindungsgemäß verwendeten Sensibilisatoren c₁,
c₂ und c₃.
Versuche haben ergeben, daß keiner der im Licht reduzierbaren
Farbstoffe der DE-OS 20 59 034 ein brauchbarer Sensibi
lisator für die erfindungsgemäß als Photoinitiatoren verwendeten
aromatischen Sulfoniumverbindungen ist.
Die in der DE-OS 20 59 034 im Anspruch 2 auf Seite 12
genannten Amine dienen als Beschleuniger, nicht aber als Sen
sibilisatoren. Auch werden hinsichtlich der verschiedenen
Amine keine Unterschiede gemacht.
Die erfindungsgemäß als Photoinitiatoren verwendeten aroma
tischen Sulfoniumverbindungen haben die folgenden allgemeine
Formel I
in der R₁, R₂ und R₃ aromatische Reste mit 4 bis 20 C-Atomen
(z. B. substituierte oder unsubstituierte Phenyl-, Thienyl-
oder Furanylgruppen) oder Alkylrest mit 1 bis 20 C-Atomen
bedeuten, mit der Maßgabe, daß mindestens einer der Reste
ein aromatischer Rest ist. Unter Alkylresten werden hierbei
auch substituierte Alkylreste verstanden, die z. B. Halogen
atome, Hydroxyl-, Alkoxy- oder Arylgruppen als Substituenten
tragen. Vorzugweise ist jeder der Reste R₁, R₂ und R₃ aromatisch. Z ist
ein Sauerstoff- oder Schwefelatom, eine C-C-Bindung oder eine
der folgenden Gruppen:
(wobei R ein
Arylrest mit z. B. 6 bis 20 C-Atomen, wie die Phenylgruppe,
oder ein Acylrest mit z. B. 2 bis 20 C-Atomen, wie die Acetyl-
und Benzoylgruppe, ist) oder
(wobei R₄ und R₅ Wasser
stoffatome, Alkylreste mit 1 bis 4 C-Atomen oder Alkenylreste
mit 2 bis 4 C-Atomen sind) n hat den Wert 0 oder 1 und X⊖
stellt ein Tetrafluorborat, Hexafluorphosphat, Hexafluor
arsenat- oder Hexafluorantimonat-Anion dar.
Aromatische Sulfoniumsalze sind bekannt und triaryl-substitu
ierte Sulfoniumverbindungen lassen sich z. B. nach den bei
G. H. Wiegand et al., Synthesis and Reactions of Triarylsulfo
nium Halides, J. Org. Chem Bd. 33, S. 2671-75 (1968), be
schriebenen Verfahren herstellen. Ein weiteres Verfahren zur
Herstellung alkylsubstituierter aromatischer Sulfoniumsalze
ist bei K. Ohkubo et al., J. Org. Chem., Bd. 36, S. 3149-55
(1971) beschrieben. Das bevorzugte Verfaharen zur Herstellung
triarylsubstituierter Sulfoniumverbindungen ist in der
US-PS 28 07 648 beschrieben. Die Sulfonium-Komplexsalze können
aus den entsprechenden Einfachsalzen, z. B. den Halogeniden,
durch Umsetzen mit einem Metall- oder Ammoniumsalz des ge
wünschten Komplexanions erhalten werden.
Die Sulfoniumverbindung ist mit mindestens einer, vorzugs
weise drei aromatischen Gruppen substituiert. Sepzielle Bei
spiele sind aromatische Gruppen mit 4 bis 20 C-Atomen aus der
Reihe der Phenyl-, Thienyl- und Furanylgruppen. Diese aromatischen
Gruppen können gegebenenfalls einen oder mehrere ankon
densierte Benzoringe aufweisen, wie z. B. die Naphthyl-, Ben
zothienyl-, Dibenzothienyl-, Benzofuranyl- und Dibenzofuranyl
gruppen. Die aromatischen Gruppen können gegebenenfalls auch
mit einer oder mehreren der folgenden Gruppen oder anderen
Gruppen substituiert sein, die mit den anderen Komponenten
der jeweiligen Masse, in der das Komplexsalz enthalten ist,
praktisch nicht reagieren: Halogenatome, Nitrogruppen, Aryl
reste, Esterreste, z. B. Alkoxycarbonylreste, wie die Methoxy
carbonyl-, Äthoxycarbonyl- und Phenoxycarbonylgruppe, Acyl
oxyreste, wie Acetoxy- und Propionyloxygruppe, Sulfoester
reste, z. B. Alkoxysulfonylreste, wie die Methoxysulfonyl-,
Butoxysulfonyl- und Phenoxysulfonylgruppe, Amidoreste, wie
die Acetamido-, Butyramido- Äthylsulfonamidogruppe, Car
bamylreste, wie die Carbamyl-, N- Alkylcarbamyl- und N-Phenyl
carbamylgruppe, Sulfamylreste, wie die Sulfamyl-, N- Alkyl
sulfamyl-, N,N-Dialkylsulfamyl- und N-Phenylsulfamylgruppe,
Alkoxyreste, wie die Methoxy-, Äthoxy- und Butoxygruppe, Aryl
reste, wie Phenylgruppe, Alkylreste, wie die Methyl-, Äthyl-
und Butylgruppe, Aryloxyreste, wie die Phenoxygruppe, Alkyl
sulfonylreste, wie die Methylsulfonyl- und Äthylsulfonylgruppe,
Arylsulfonylreste, wie die Phenylsulfonylgruppe, Per
fluoralkylreste, wie die Trifluormethyl- und Perfluoräthyl
gruppe, und Perfluoralkylsulfonylreste, wie die Trifluor
methylsulfonyl- und Perfluorbutylsulfonylgruppe.

Die bevorzugten aromatischen Sulfoniumverbindungen sind
triaryl-substituierte Salze, wie Triphenylsulfoniumhexa
fluorphosphat. Diese Salze sind thermisch stabiler als
mono- und diarylsubstituierte Salze und können in härtbaren
Einpackungssystemen mit langer Gebrauchsdauer verwendet werden.
Außerdem sind die triaryl-substituierten Komplexsalze
der Sensibilisierung zugänglicher.
Die erfindungsgemäß verwendeten Sensibilisatoren lassen sich
in folgenden Gruppen unterteilen:
- (1) aromatische tertiäre Amine der allgemeinen Formel II in der Ar¹, Ar² und Ar³ gleich oder verschieden sind und Arylreste mit 6 bis 20 C-Atomen bedeuten. Die aromatischen Gruppen können gegebenenfalls z. B. durch Hydroxyl-, Alkoxy- Acyl- oder Alkylreste substituiert sein. Z ist ein Sauerstoff- oder Schwefelatom, eine C-C- Bindung oder eine der folgenden Gruppen: (wobei R ein Arylrest mit z. B. 6 bis 20 C-Atomen, wie die Phenyl- oder Naphthylgruppe, ist) oder (wobei R₄ und R₅ Wasserstoffatome, Alkylreste mit 1 bis 4 C-Atomen oder Alkenylreste mit 2 bis 4 C-Atomen sind) und n hat den Wert 0 oder 1.
- (2) aromatische tertiäre Diamine der allgemeinen Formel III in der Y ein Arylrest oder der zweiwertige Rest: Ar⁸-Z-Ar⁹ ist, Z die vorstehende Bedeutung hat, Ar⁴, Ar⁵, Ar⁶, Ar⁷, Ar⁸ und Ar⁹ gleich oder verschieden sind und aromatische Gruppen mit 6 bis 20 C-Atomen darstellen und m und n den Wert 0 bis 1 haben. Die aromatischen Gruppen können gegebenenfalls z. B. durch Hydroxyl-, Alkoxy-, Acyl- oder Alkylreste substituiert sein.
- (3) aromatische polycyclische Verbindungen mit mindestens drei kondensierten Benzolringen und einem Ionisationspotenitial von weniger als etwa 7,5 eV. Das Ionisationspotential wird berechnet nach der Methode von F. A. Matsen, J. Chem. Physics, Bd. 24, S 602 (1956). Diese Verbindungen können gegebenenfalls z. B. durch Alkyl-, Alkoxy-, Aryl-, Aryl oxy-, Aralkyl- oder Alkarylreste substituiert sein.
Spezielle Beispiele für erfindungsgemäß verwendete Sensibili

Die sensibilisierten aromatischen Sulfoniumverbindungen eignen
sich in erster Linie als Photoinitiatoren für kationische
Reaktionen, z. B. bei der Polymerisation kationisch polymeri
sierbarer Monomere. So eignen sich die sensibilisierten Sulfoniumver
bindungen z. B. als Photoinitiatoren für die Polymerisation
oder Copolymerisation von Epoxiden, Oxetanen, Vinyläthern
und Lactonen. Ferner können die sensibilisierten Sulfoniumverbindungen
auch als Photoinitiatoren für die radikalische Polymerisation,
z. B. die Polymerisation von Vinylmonomeren, angewandt
werden.
Die Sensibilisatormenge beträgt 0,01 bis
1 Gewichtsteil, vorzugsweise 0,1 bis 1 Gewichtsteil, pro
Gewichtsteil der aromatischen Sulfoniumverbindung. Die jeweilige
Sensibilisatormenge richtet sich hierbei z. B. nach den Be
lichtungsbedingungen, der Dicke der zu härtenden Masse, der
Löslichkeit des Sensibilisators in der Masse und anderen Fak
toren, die gewöhnlich bei der Anwendung von Sensibilisatoren
zu beobachten sind.
Die Beispiele erläutern die Erfindung. Alle Teile beziehen
sich auf das Gewicht, falls nichts anderes angegeben ist.
Eine Grundlösung wird aus folgenden Materialien hergestellt:
100 gEpoxyharz (Diglycidyläther von Bisphenol A,
Epoxid-Äquivalentgewicht 185)
4 gTriphenylsulfoniumhexafluorphosphat
10 gAceton
20 mg der Verbindungen in Tabelle I werden in jeweils 5 g der
Grundlösung aufgelöst und mit einer Rakel in einer Naßschicht
dicke von 50 µ auf eine Polyesterfolie aufgetragen und ge
trocknet. Proben der erhaltenen Überzüge werden durch ein
Corning-Filter belichtet, das nur Licht mit einer Wellenlänge
von mehr als 334 nm durchläßt. Das Belichten erfolgt mit einer
GE-H3T7-Hochdruck-Quecksilberlampe in einem Abstand von
17,78 cm. Die zur Erzielung einer klebfreien Oberfläche bzw.
zur vollständigen Härtung erforderlichen Belichtungszeiten
sind in Tabelle I angegeben.
Eine Grundlösung wird aus folgenden Materialien hergestellt
50 gMethylvinyläther/Maleinsäure-Copolymerisat
7 gDiacetonacrylamid
1 gMethylen-bis-acrylamid
0,5 gTriphenylsulfoniumhexafluorphosphat
Jeweils 5 g dieser Grundlösung werden mit 10 mg der Sensibili
satoren in Tabelle II versetzt und mit einer Rakel in einer
Naßschichtdicke von 50 µ auf eine Polyesterfolie aufgetragen,
die eine Gelantine-Haftschicht aufweist. Die getrockneten Proben
werden durch einen photographischen Stufenkeil mit derselben
Lampe im selben Abstand wie in den Beispielen 1 bis 11
belichtet. Hierauf besprüht man die belichteten Proben mit
Wasser, um die nicht polymerisierten Bereiche abzulösen. Die
Anzahl an polymerisierten Stufen ist ein Maß für die relative
Photopolymerisationsgeschwindigkeit.
Eine Grundlösung wird aus folgenden Materialien hergestellt:
30 gEpoxyharz (Diglycidyläther von Bisphenol A,
Epoxid-Äquivalentgewicht 185)
1,2 gTri-p-tolylsulfoniumhexafluorantimonat
3 gAceton
Jeweils 5 g dieser Grundlösung werden mit 20 mg der Sensibi
lisatoren in Tabelle III versetzt und mit einer Rakel in
einer Naßschichtdicke von 50 µ auf eine Polyesterfolie aufge
tragen und dann an der Luft getrocknet. Proben der erhaltenen
Überzüge werden durch dasselbe Filter wie in den Beispielen 1 bis
11 belichtet, jedoch dient als Lichtquelle eine 275-Watt-
General-Electric-Sonnenlampe in einem Abstand von 12,7 cm. Die
zur vollständigen Härtung erforderliche Belichtungszeit ist
in Tabelle III angegeben.
Eine Grundlösung wird aus folgenden Materialien hergestellt:
50 gEpoxyharz (Diglycidyläther von Bisphenol A,
Epoxid-Äquivalentgewicht 185)
2 gMethyldiphenylsulfoniumhexafluorphosphat
20 mg der Sensibilisatoren in Tabelle IV werden in jeweils
5 g der Grundlösung gelöst. Hierauf trägt man die Lösungen
mit einer Rakel in einer Naßschichtdicke von 50 µ auf eine
Polyesterfolie auf und trocknet sie an der Luft. Die Proben
werden durch das in den Beispielen 1 bis 11 verwendete Filter
belichtet. Die Belichtung erfolgt mit einer 275-Watt-General-
Electric-Sonnenlampe in einem Abstand von 12,7 cm. Die zur Er
zielung einer klebfreien Oberfläche erforderliche Belichtungs
zeit ist in Tabelle IV angegeben.
Photopolymerisierbare Überzugsmassen werden aus den in Tabelle V
angegebenen Bestandteilen hergestellt. Die Massen werden
dann mit einer Rakel in einer Naßschichtdicke von 50 µ auf
eine 50 µ starke Polyesterfolie aufgetragen und 1 Stunde an
der Luft getrocknet, wobei ein 35 µ dicker Überzug entsteht.
Proben der jeweiligen Überzüge werden durch ein Corning Glass-
Filter Nr. 0-52 (dasselbe Filter wie in den Beispielen 1 bis
11) mit einer General-Electric-H3T7-Quecksilberdampflampe in
einem Abstand von 17,78 cm belichtet. Die Durchlässigkeit des
Filters für Licht mit einer Wellenlänge unterhalb 334 nm be
trägt weniger als 0,5%. Die aromatischen Sulfonium-Komplex
salze absorbieren nur Licht mit einer Wellenlänge unterhalb
etwa 320 nm, so daß das Filter das zur Photolyse der Sulfo
nium-Komplexsalze erforderliche Aktivierungslicht abfängt.
Bei der Sensibilisator-freien Probe aus Beispiel 25 ist nach einer Belichtungszeit
von 10 Minuten keine Härtung zu beobachten. Dagegen sind bei
den Proben der Beispiele 26 und 27 Belichtungszeiten von
1 bis 2,5 min für eine vollständige Aushärtung ausreichend.
Photopolymerisierbare Überzugsmassen werden aus den in Tabelle VI
genannten Bestandteilen hergestellt: Die Massen werden
damit mit einer Rakel in einer Naßschichtdicke von 75 µ auf
eine Polyesterfolie aufgetragen, die eine Gelantine-Haft
schicht aufweist, und dann 1 Stunde an der Luft getrocknet.
Jede der Proben wird durch ein Corning-Filter Nr. 0-52
mit einer 275-Watt-General-Electric-Sonnenlampe in einem Ab
stand von 12,7 cm belichtet. Die Sensibilisator-freie Probe aus Beispiel 28 zeigt
nach 5minütiger Belichtung keine Anzeichen von Strahlungs
härtung. Dagegen sind die Proben aus den Beispielen 29 und 30
nach einer Belichtungszeit von 5 Sekunden vollständig unlös
lich.
Claims (3)
1. Photopolymerisierbare Masse, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß sie folgende Bestandteile enthält:
- a) ein kationisch oder radikalisch polymerisierbares Monomer,
- b) eine aromatische Sulfoniumverbindung der allgemeinen Formel I in der R₁, R₂ und R₃ aromatische Reste mit 4 bis 20 Kohlenstoffatomen oder Alkylreste mit 1 bis 20 Kohlenstoffatomen bedeuten, wobei mindestens einer der Reste R₁, R₂ und R₃ ein aromatischer Rest ist, Z ein Sauerstoff- oder Schwefelatom, eine C-C-Bindung oder eine der folgenden Gruppen ist: wobei R ein Aryl- oder Acylrest und R₄ und R₅ Wasserstoffatome, Alkylreste mit 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoff atomen oder Alkenylreste mit 2 bis 4 Kohlenstoff atomen bedeuten, n der Wert 0 oder 1 hat und X⊖ ein Tetrafluorborat-, Hexafluorphosphat-, Hexafluor arsenat- oder Hexafluorantimonat-Anion darstellt, sowie
- c₁) ein aromatisches tertiäres Amin der allgemeinen Formel II in der Ar¹, Ar² und Ar³ Arylreste mit 6 bis 20 Kohlen stoffatomen bedeutet, Z und n die vorstehend ange gebene Bedeutung haben oder
- c₂) ein aromatisches tertiäres Diamin der allgemeinen Formel III in der Y einen Arylenrest oder den zweiwertigen Rest Ar⁸-Z-Ar⁹ bedeutet, Z und n die vorstehende Be deutung haben, Ar⁴, Ar⁵, Ar⁶, Ar⁷, Ar⁸ und Ar⁹ Arylreste mit 6 bis 20 Kohlenstoffatomen sind und m den Wert 0 oder 1 hat, oder
- c₃) eine aromatische polycyclische Verbindung mit mindestens drei kondensierten Benzolringen und einem Ionisationspotential von weniger als etwa 7,5 eV als Sensibilisator, wobei das Gewichtsverhältnis von Sensibilisator zu Sulfoniumverbindungen 0,01 : 1 bis 1 : 1 beträgt.
2. Photopolymerisierbare Masse nach Anspruch 1, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß das Monomer ein Epoxid ist.
3. Photopolymerisierbare Masse nach Anspruch 1, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß der Sensibilisator 2-Äthyl-9,10-
dimethoxyanthrazen, Anthrazen, Rubren, Tetraphenyl
benzidin oder Triphenylamin ist.
