Description
Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein Verfahren zur Aktivierung von Katalysatoren für Elektroden in
elektrochemischen Zellen, insbesondere in Brennstoff
zellen mit einem Kobalt-, Eisen- oder Kupfer-Chelat des 5,14-Dihydro-dibenzo-(5,9,14,18)-tetraaza-(14)-annulens
als Katalysator.
Eine wesentliche Voraussetzung für den Einsat/ von
Brennstoffzellen auf breiter Basis isi das Vorhandensein
von hochaktiven und billigen Katalysatoren sowohl für die anodische Oxidation von aus wirtschaftlicher Sicht
interessanten Brennstoffen, wie Methanol, Formaldehyd. Ameisensäure, Kohlenmonoxid, Oxalsäure u. a., als
auch für die kathodische Umsetzung vom Sauerstoff.
Ein besonderes Anliegen der Forschung ist dabei die Entwicklung edelmetallfrcier Katalysatoren, da gerade
die Edelmetalle infolge ihres relativ geringen Vorkommens
und ihres hohen Preises einer weiten Verbreitung als Katalysatoren im Wege stehen.
Als derartige, edelmctallfri . Katalysatoren für die
kathodische Reaktion sind bereits die Kobalt·. F.isen- und Kupfer-C helate des 5,14-Dihydro-dibcnzo-(5,9.14.18)-tetraa/.a-(14)-annulens
bekannt (DE-OS 20 46 354), während für die anodische Reaktion lediglich
das bereits vorgeschlagene Kobalt-Chclat eine Akti. ität

Unter den genannten Chelaten hat sich das CoTAA bisher am besten bewährt.
.'ei Besonders günstige Werte für die Aktivität dieser
Katalysatoren konnten erzielt werden, wenn man die mit dem Katalysator versehene Elektrode vor Inbetriebnahme einige Zeit bei Potentialen oberhalb 500 mV
beläßt. Vor allem für die anodische Brennstoffoxidation
:-, können so recht aktive Katalysatoren gewonnen
werden. Bei Verwendung als kathodische Sauerstoffkatalysatoren erhält man zwar zunächst auch eine
verhältnismäßig hohe Aktivität, der Katalysator ist aber nicht beständig, so daß er schon nach etwa einem Tag
in Versuchsdauer praktisch inaktiv ist.
Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung ist es, ein Verfahren anzugeben, mit dem es gelingt, die genannten
Metall-Chelate des 5,14-Dihydro-dibenzo-(5,9,14,18)-tetraaza-(14)-annulens als Katalysatoren so zu aktivieren
r. und die Aktivität zu stabilisieren, daß sie in elektrochemischen Zellen je nach Wahl der Aktivierungibedingungen entweder als Anode oder auch als Kathode
eingesetzt werden können, dabei eine ausreichende Lebensdauer aufweisen und eine möglichst hohe
4M Aktivität bezüglich der beabsichtigten Reaktion zeigen,
wobei aber die an der anderen Elektrode ablaufende
4·> gelöst, daß der Katalysator unter Inertgas bei einer
Temperatur oberhalb 400°C getempert wird.
Ist ein Kobalt-Katalysator für eine Brennstoffelektrode vorgesehen, so wird er bei Temperaturen zwischen
400 und 5000C in einer Inertgas-Atmosphäre getempert.
-><i Der so erhaltene Katalysator zeigt bei Verwendung in
einer Brennstoffelektrode sehr gute Aktivität und Beständigkeit. In einer Sauerstoffelcktrode zeigen die
Kobalt-, Eisen- oder Kupfer-Katalysatoren am Anfang ebenfalls eine hohe Aktivität, die aber sehr schnell
V) nachläßt und schließlich ganz verschwindet. Dies liegt
wahrscheinlich daran, daß bei dem an einer Sauerstoffelektrode herrschenden hohen Potential von mindestens
ca. 750 mV der Katalysator nicht beständig ist und in eine inaktive Verbindung umgewandelt wird.

einer Temperatur /wischen 600 und 1000 C unter einem Inertgas durch. Der so erhaltene Katalysator zcitM
gegenüber Sauerstoff eine hervorragende Aktivität, isl
aber gegenüber Brennstoffen praktisch inaktiv. Zur Erhöhung der elektrischen Leitfähigkeit der späteren
Sauerstoffelektrode ist es vorteilhaft, wenn der Katalysator vor der Temperung mit einem Anteil Kohlenstoff,
z. B. Aktivkohle oder Acetylenruß, vermischt wird. Der
Kohleanteil kann dabei bis zum dreifachen des Katalysators betragen.
Für das CoTAA gilt zwar, daß es bei 3700C zu
sublimieren beginnt, es sublimiert aber auch bei den
höchsten verwendeten Temperaturen von etwa 8500C nur ein Anteil von höchstens 30 bis 40 Gewichtsprozent
des eingesetzten Chelats.
Als Inertgas bei der Sinterung dient vor allem Stickstoff.
Die Erfindung soll im folgenden an je einem Beispiel für eine Verwendung als Brennstoffkatalysator bzw. als
Sauerstoffkatalysator näher erläutert werden.
I.Beispiel
Brennstoffkatalysator
Brennstoffkatalysator
500 mg CoTAA wurden in einem Glasgefäß zunächst eine Stunde lang bei Raumtemperatur mit Stickstoff
gespült und dann vier Stunden unter Stickstoff auf einer Temperatur von 420°C gehalten. Dabei sublimierte ein
Teil des Chelats ab und als Rückstand wurden 320 mg eines schwarzen glänzenden Reaktionsproduktes erhalten.
6 mg davon wurden mit 6 mg Acetylenruß im Mörser verrieben und dann zwischen zwei etwa 2 mm
dicke Graphit-Filzscheiben mit einer Fläche von 5 cm2 gebracht. Die so erhaltene Elektrode wird in einen
Plexiglashalter mit einer Stromableitung aus einer Ti —Pd-Legierung eingespannt. Bei einem Potential von
350 mV, bezogen auf die Wasserstoffelcktrode im gleichen Elektrolyten, wurde in einer Halbzellenanordnungbei70°Cin
2n-H2SO4 + 3-niHCOOH
ein Oxidationsstrom für die Ameisensäure von 41 mA
gemessen. Das entspricht einer Katalysatoraktivität von 6,8 A/g.
2. B e i s ρ i e 1
Sauerstoffkatalysator
Sauerstoffkatalysator
1 g Aktivkohle wird mit 0,5 g CoTAA in einer Schlagmühle innig vermischt und unter Stickstoffatmosphäre
zunächst 16 Stunden bei 4200C und anschließend 1 Stunde bei 800° C getempert Das so gewornene
Material wird mit so viel einer PTFE-Emulsion vermischt, daß der PTFE-Anteil 15 Gewichtsprozent
ίο der Mischung aus Aktivkohle und CoTAA entspricht
Nach guter Durchmischung wird das Emulsionsmittel abgesaugt, so daß eine gut haftende hydrophobe Masse
entsteht. Diese wird mit einem Spatel in dünner Schicht auf eine poröse PTFE-Folie mit einer Fläche von 2 cm2
aufgetragen. Die Elektrode wird in einen Plexiglashalter eingespannt und von der Folienseite her mit Sauerstoff
begast und von der Elektrolytseite über einen Graphit-Filz kontaktiert Bei einer Belegungsdichte von
5 mg Aktivmaterial pro cm2 läßt sich diese Elektrode bei Raumtemperatur in 4,5 U-H2SO4 bei 740 mV mit 5 A/g
belasten. Diese Aktivität ließ sich über mehrere tausend Stunden aufrechterhalten.
Die Erfindung ermöglicht es, die an sich als Brennstoff- bzw. Sauerstoffkatalysator in elektrochemi-
r, sehen Zellen bekannten Kobalt-, Eisen- oder Kupfer-Chelate
des 5,14-Dihydro-dibenzo-(5,9,14,18)-tetraaza-(H)-annulens so zu aktivieren, daß sie je nach
Aktivierungsbedingungen entweder ais Brennstoff-(CoTAA) oder als Sauerstoffkatalysator (CoTAA,
in FeTAA, CuTAA) verwendet werden können. Dabei zeigt der Sauerstoffkatalysator praktisch keine Aktivität
gegenüber Brennstoffen, so daß keinerlei Vorsichtsmaßnahmen notwendig sind, den Brennstoff zur
Verhinderung der Bildung von Mischpotentiaien von der Sauerstoffelektrode fernzuhalten. Die Brennstoffelektrode
ist nach dem Aktivierungsverfahren zwar auch für Sauerstoff aktiv, doch läßt sich ein direkter
Kontakt der Brennstoffelektrode mit dem Sauerstoff durch konstruktive Vorkehrungen leicht verhindern.
Aktivität und Lebensdauer der Katalysatoren, vor allem bei Verwendung in Sauerstoffelektroden, werden durch
die Erfindung in hohem Maße verbessert, so daß eine Verwendung von CoTAA in einer Sauerstoffelektrode
durch die Erfindung, zumindest über längere Zeit
4-, hinweg, überhaupt erst möglich wird.
Claims (5)
1. Verfahren zur Aktivierung von Katalysatoren für Elektroden in elektrochemischen Zellen, insbesondere in Brennstoffzellen, mit einem Kobalt-,
Eisen- oder Kupfer-Chelat des 5,14-Dihydro-dibenzo-(5,9,14,18)-tetraaza-(14)-annulens als Katalysator, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der
Katalysator unter Inertgas bei einer Temperatur oberhalb 400° C getempert wird.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der für eine Brennstoffelektrode
vorgesehene Kobalt-Katalysator bei einer Temperatur von 400 bis 500° C getempert wird.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der für eine Sauerstoffelektrode
vorgesehene Kobalt-, Eisen- oder Kupfer-Katalysator bei einer Temperatur von 600 bis 1000° C
getempert wird.
4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß dem Katalysator vor der Temperung
zur Erhöhung der elektrischen Leitfähigkeit Kohle zugemischt wird.
5. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Temperung unter
Stickstoff als Inertgas durchgeführt wird.
Propargylaldehyd und den entsprechenden Metall(ll)-acetaten gewonnen werden können und folgende
