vorgeschlagen, welches in reinen Zustand einen Schmelzpunkt von
1880C unter Zersetzung besitzt.
Die neue Verbindung kann dadurch hergestellt werden, daß man ein

Molekül Crofconaldehyd mit drei Molekülen 3-Methyl-6-tert.-butylphenol in Gegenwart; eines geeigneten Kondensationsmittel·, wie
z.B. 2!inkch2:x -r. starke Schwefelsäure oder Pluorsulfoneäure
und vorzugsweise starke Salzsäure umsetzt. Die Umsetzung wird
In Anwesenheit alnee Lösungsmittel? ausgeführt. Es wird angenommen,
dad das Lösungsmittel die Bildung von harzartigen Produkten verhindert. Das Lösungsmittel roue gegenüber den Reaktionestoffen
Inert sein und kann beispielsweise aus Methanol oder Eisessig bestehen. Die Umsetzung erfolgt vorzugsweise bei etwas erhöhter
Temperatur« beispielsweise bei der RÜokfluBtemperatur des Lösungsmittels. Das Produkt kann in irgendeine.* Welse gewonnen werden.
Wenn jedoch das Produkt fest ist, wird es vorgezogen, ein Schleppmlttel, vorzugsweise Toluol, zuzusetzen« worauf dann die Mischung
destilliert wird, bis im wesentlichen reines Toluol abdestilliert.
Durch KUhlen des Rückstandes scheidet sich dann das feste Produkt
ab.
Die erfindungsgemäSe Verbindung ist ein wertvolle Antioxydationsmittel für polymere Materialien, wie z.B. synthetische und natürliche Kauteehukarten, Polyolefine wie Polyäthylen und Polypropylen
und für Polyäthylenterephthalate Sie sind insbesondere für
Materialien brauchbar, bei denen eine Verfärbung unerwünscht ist.
Sie werden in solchen Materialien in Mengen eingearbeitet* die
gewöhnlich 1 Gew.-# nicht überschreiten*

Konesatlcospsrodukte aus ungesättigten Aldehyden und Phenolen
bekannt. Bs wurde jedoch festgestellt, daß die vorliegende Verbindung in Mehrfacher Hinsicht den bekannten ähnlichen Verbindungen Überlegen 1st, «le aus den beigefügten Vergleichsversuohen ent·
nommen «erden kann·
Öle Herstellung der neuen Verbindungen bildet den Gegenstand des
deutschen Patente... (Aktenzeichen J 18 495 IVb/12 qu). Oenftuere
Herstellwngaanweleungen für die neue Verbindung können dieser
Fa tent schrift entnooMn «erden·
Die erflndungageaäSe Verbindung wurde als Antioxydationsmittel
für Poly&thylemterep&thalatf ollen und einen mittleren Nitrll«
kautschuk untersucht. Der letztere besaß einen Mooney«Viskos 1-t&tsindex von 89» elaea aonlnellen Acrylnltrilgehalt von 52 %
und Hürde durch eine bei niedriger Temperatur von etwa 50C
durchgeführte Polynerlsation hergestellt. Die Versuche wurden
wie folgt durchgeführtt

(a) Nitrilkautsehuk
FUr den Sauerstoffaufnahmeversuch wurden dttnne rohe Crepeproben In
einen Glaskolben eingebracht, welcher einige Molekularsiebe 5A
"Linde" enthielt und der durch ein Quecksilber enthaltendes U-Rohr mit einem anderen Glaskolben verbunden war. Die erwähnten
"Linde" Molekularsiebe bestehen aus synthetischen Zeoliten. Beide
mit Luft gefüllte Kolben wurden dann verschlossen und die Apparatur wurde in einen Dampfthermostaten von 780G gebracht. Eine Verschiebung des Quecksilbers in dem IT-Rohr lässt eine Oxydation des Polyäthylens erkennen und die Zelt In dem bei 78CC gehaltenen Dampf*
thermostaten, bis eine erhebliche Verschiebung des Quecksilbers auftrat, wurde gemessen. Diese Zeit war die Induktionsperiode
für den Säuerstoffaufnahmeversuch.
(b) Polyethylenterephthalat.
Bs wurden ähnliche Sauerstoffaufnahmeuntersuchungen bei 2000C
mit einer Folie aus diesem Material von 0,025 mm Stärke durchgeführt, wobei die betreffende Probe mit einem Belag aus einer
5$lgen Lösung des Antioxydationsmittels In einer 50 s 50-Misohung von Toluol und Aceton bestrichen wurde. Die in der Tabelle angegebene Zeit ist die Anzahl von Stunden« «eiche erforderlich war,
um in jedem Fall 20 und 40 ecm Sauerstoff pro g der Probe zn absorbieren.

Dl· folgenden Vergleiohsverauche demonstrieren die Überlegenheit
der erfindungsgemäßen Verbindung gegenüber den besten aus der
US-Patentschrift 2 919 294 und 2 912 463 bekannten Verbindungen
in der Anwendung auf Polypropylen«
Bei den besten aus den genannten- US-Patentsohriften bekannten
Verbindungen handelt es sich um folgende :
1. 4, V-(2-Äthyl-2-hexen-l-yliden)-bis-(6-tert .-butyl-m-eresol)
2 · 4,4· - (2-Xthy 1-2-buten-l-y llden).-bis~ (6-tert. -butyl-m-cresol)
(1) l/S Mol 3-Methyl-6-tert.-buty!phenol (das 1st 6-tert0-Butylm-oresol) und 1/4 NoI a-Äthyl-B-propylacrolein (das ist 2-Xthyl-2-hexanal} wurden zusammen mit 4,7 g Salzsäure unter RUclcflufl
auf einem Wasserbad annähernd eine l/S Stunde lang erhitzt* Das Produkt war ein dunkelbrauner viskoser Sirup. Das Reaktionsgemieoh wurde abgekühlt und es wurden ungefähr 100 ml eines Lösungsmittels zugegeben, das aus einem Geraisch aus aliphatischen Kohlen·
Wasserstoffen mit ungefähr 7 Kohlenstoffatomen bestand. Das Produkt wurde 4 Stunden etwas oberhalb Raumtemperatur
gertihrt, und der resultierende weide Feststoff wurde abfiltriert,

mlt dem gleichen aliphatischen Kohlenwasserstoff gewaschen und
getrocknet. Das Produkt wurde dann aus Benzol tsmkristallislert.
Die Ausbeute betrug ungefähr 10 g. Das Produkt hatte einen Schmelzpunkt von 203 bis 2070C0 Dieser Schmelzpunkt wurde nicht
gesenkt, wenn dieses Produkt mit einer Probe von l,l-Bis~(3-iaethyl-6-tert.-butyl-phenylol)-butan
gemischt wurde» Das Infra» rotspektrum dieser beiden Verbindungen war identisch, woraus
hervorging» daß es sich bei dem Produkt um l,l-Bis-(3-raethyl-6-tert«,-butyl-phenylol)-butan
und nicht um« wie in einer der genannten US-Patentschriften behauptet« das 4,49-(2-&thyl-2-hexen>l-yliden)-bis-6-tert.-buty
1-m-cresol handelte.
(2) Ein entsprechender Versuch wurde unter Verwendung von a-Methyl-ß-äthylacrolein
(das ist 2-Methyl-2-phentßnal) und 3-Mefchyl*
6-tert.-buty!phenol ausgeführt. Das Produkt wurde als !,l-Bis-(3-methyl-6-tertο-buty1-phenylol)-propan
identifiziert ο
(3) Sum Vergleich wurde die erf indu^gssgemäße Verbindung veiv
wendet a
Diese drei Stabilisatoren wurden in einer Menge von 0,5
in Polypropylen eingearbeitet, woraus dann Platten von 0,5 ram Dicke angefertigt wurden„ Die Platten wurden bei einer Temperatur
von 1500C in einem Ofen gealtert, wobei über die Platten Luft

mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 1 en? pro Minuten gleitet wurde
Die Zeitdauer, bis eine VersprSdung eintrat, war wie folgt:

Die bessere der bekannten Verbindungen, nämlich die Verbindung '
1 wurde in einem SchmelzetablIitätstest mit der erfindungsgetnäSen
Verbindung (5) verglichen. Die Sohmelzstabilität ist sehr
wichtig, da thermoplastische Formmassen bei der Verformung auf
höhere Temperaturen gehalten werden müssen» Bei diesen höheren Temperaturen tritt eine Spaltung der Polymerketten auf, so daß
die Viskosität sinkt.
Die Versuche wurden mit Polypropylen ausgeführt, das 0,1 bzw.
0,5 Gew.-% der Verbindung (l) bzw. der Verbindung O) als Antioxydationsmittel
enthielt. Die Schmelzflußindices wurden mit die»
sen Proben unter Verwendung von ASTK D.1228-57T geraessen,
wobei ein 10 kg Gewicht bei 1900C vor und nach dem Spritzguß
von 3,2 mm dicken Polypropylenplatten und eine Verweilzeit im Zylinder von 20 Minuten bei der Testt?nperatur von 295°C angewendet wurde.
