EP0488116A2描述了可逆型聚合物分散液晶器件的构建,当不施加电场时其是透明的。它使用聚合物和液晶在其内相互分散且当不施加电场时二者在相同的方向上取向的液晶聚合物复合层。液晶的取向可以与基底平行或垂直。若取向平行于基底,则使用具有正的介电各向异性的液晶,而在垂直取向(VA)情况下,使用具有负的介电各向异性的液晶。为了取向液晶,可例如通过沉积分别具有平行或垂直取向性能的取向层,进行基底表面的取向处理。在平行取向情况下,随后刷涂取向层界定了基底平面内的定向方向,而在垂直取向情况下,不要求进一步的取向处理。在实施例中,聚合物对液晶之比为约1:10或15:85。EP0488116A2教导了液晶的最佳量为50-97%,和若液晶含量高于97%,则得不到合适的对比度。若组合物包括聚合物前体,则通过在室温下暴露于紫外光下聚合该预聚物。
许多PDLC器件的缺点是采用增加和降低的电压测量的电压-透射率曲线的差异,这称为滞后(hysteresis)。
H.Murai等人,J.Appl.Phys.81(4),第1962页公开了一种垂直排列的可逆模式的聚合物-液晶器件,经研究,聚合物含量为1至5wt%。通过在液晶相内引发单体反应,形成聚合物,这导致在垂直排列方向上取向的聚合物网络。在液晶中3-5wt%的单体含量证明得到良好的性能。若含量小于3wt%,则具有不足的通态散射,且常常透射率没有返回到起始值,当断开所施加的电压时。在实验中,用垂直取向层覆盖池基底,但不采用擦拭工艺。
JP200034714公开了一种具有含聚合物分散体的液晶层的VA-LCD。通过在一对基底之间提供液晶和单体的混合物和在液晶处于液晶相的同时聚合该单体,制造液晶层。所形成的聚合物分散体在液晶层内维持液晶分子的预倾角。US5,496,497公开了一种含液晶以及单-和双官能丙烯酸酯组分的组合物,后两者具有在一定范围内的极性。采用这种组合物制造的PDLC器件显示出减少的滞后。
尽管聚合物分散的液晶器件的优点之一是它不要求偏振片来观察接通和断开状态之间的亮度差别,但它仍然可配有这种偏振片,所述偏振片的优点是较高的对比度。在正常类型的VA聚合物分散的LCD情况下,对比度尤其高。然而,现有技术的VA聚合物分散的液晶显示器的滞后太高,以致于无法显示出具有高品质的灰度图像。
发明概述
因此,本发明的目的是提供一种具有减少的滞后的散射型VA液晶器件以及制造所述器件的方法。
通过含聚合物的散射型VA液晶器件的制造方法来实现上述目的,所述制造方法包括下述步骤:提供具有电极的两个基底;通过以基底之间具有间隙且电极在内侧彼此面对的方式,排列所述两个基底,来制造池;用含具有负的介电各向异性的液晶材料和聚合物前体的液晶混合物填充所述池;在用液晶混合物填充所述池之前或之后,对所述液晶混合物施加取向处理,使得在从法向向基底倾斜的预倾角下定向所述液晶混合物,和在比液晶混合物的清洗温度(clearing temperature)高的温度下聚合所述聚合物前体。
上述制造方法导致聚合物分散型VA液晶器件。为了不与以上所述的已知的PDLC器件混淆,术语“含有聚合物的散射型VA液晶器件”用于本发明的器件。在没有附着任何偏振片的情况下,只要不施加电压,则本发明的器件是透射型的,和若施加电压到所述器件的电极上,则散射入射光。
所述聚合物前体优选是单官能、双官能或多官能的单体,更优选单官能,双官能或多官能的丙烯酸酯。同样可能的是液晶混合物包括大于一种聚合物前体。所述聚合物前体可以是各向同性材料,但优选至少一种聚合物前体具有液晶相。
液晶混合物优选包括聚合引发剂。若期望光聚合,则优选液晶混合物包括光聚合引发剂。
关于液晶材料的主要要求是,介电各向异性是负的。然而,液晶材料可以是同样含具有零或正介电各向异性的化合物的混合物。
优选地,由上述方法得到的聚合物与液晶材料相分离。
在从法向向基底倾斜的某一方向上,取向液晶材料和优选在液晶材料内聚合物的效果是,可在基本上没有滞后的情况下,转换所述器件。因此,直视透射或使用有源器件的投影显示器(例如段式显示器)、无源矩阵显示器和使用本发明的方法制造的TFT(薄膜晶体管)的显示性能得到显著改进。此外,当用于使窗玻璃变模糊时,当不施加电压时是透明和当施加电压时结霜的模糊的窗玻璃的破损安全得以实现。
在优选的方法中,在基底的至少一个内表面上沉积取向层。
可使用本领域已知的任何方法生成倾斜取向。例如,可通过基底的至少一个内表面侧的取向处理,实现在某一方向上液晶的倾斜取向。然后可采用刷涂方法,针对液晶混合物生成具有预倾角的取向。优选地,取向层包括可光取向材料,其中当合适地用取向光辐照时,生成具有预倾角的取向。
也可通过电场或磁场,实现倾斜取向。在这一情况下,不要求取向层的取向处理。例如,在引发聚合之前,具有含聚合物前体的液晶混合物的池可在外磁场内被取向。优选地,还在聚合工艺过程中施加电场和/或磁场。
在本申请的上下文中,术语“取向光”应当是指可在可光取向材料内诱导各向异性且至少部分线性或椭圆偏振和/或从倾斜的方向入射到可光取向材料的表面上的光。优选地,在大于5:1的偏振度下,线性偏振取向光。取决于可光取向材料的光敏度,选择取向光的波长、强度和能量。
优选地,预倾角的范围为自基底的法向起0.2-44.5°,更优选0.2-10°,和最优选0.5-4°。
由于在某一方向上倾斜,因此方位角的定向方向应当是指在相应的相邻基底上倾斜方向的投影。
在处理两个基底的内表面以在某一方向上诱导液晶的倾斜取向的情况下,两个基底的方位角定向方向可以是相对于彼此的任何角度。优选地,两个定向方向之间的角度为180°,当擦拭用作取向处理时,所述定向方向通常称为反-平行擦拭取向。更优选该角度为约90°。
以上提及的电极之一可以充当反射层。同样可能的是在观察者看到的器件后方添加反射层。
优选地,以上提及的聚合物由优选具有丙烯酸酯基或甲基丙烯酸酯基的单官能、双官能或多官能单体制备。优选地,以上提及的聚合物与以上提及的液晶相容,使得存在液晶相。
本发明的含聚合物的散射型VA液晶器件包括具有限制在具有电极的两个基底之间的液晶相的组合物,其中该组合物包括具有负的介电各向异性的液晶材料和分散于其中的聚合物,当不施加电场时,所述液晶相对于基底的法向具有预倾角。在没有任何额外层的情况下,尤其在没有额外偏振片的情况下,当不施加电压时,可见光的透射率优选大于90%,和一旦施加合适的电压,则所述器件处于散射状态下。所述器件的性能优选使得可通过调节合适的电压来实现沿着入射方向准直入射光的透射率小于30%。
优选根据以上所述的方法之一,制造本发明的含聚合物的散射型VA液晶器件。

发明详述
在图1(a)中示出了本发明含有聚合物的散射型液晶器件的实施方案。含液晶材料104和聚合物105的液晶聚合物复合层109夹在两个透明基底101和108之间。液晶材料104具有负的介电各向异性且在自与基底垂直的方向略微倾斜的方向上定向。优选地,聚合物也在自与基底垂直的方向略微倾斜的方向上定向。通过聚合在液晶材料104内溶解或分散的聚合物前体,制备聚合物105。在聚合过程中,温度高于含液晶材料和聚合物前体的混合物的清洗温度。优选地,聚合物前体与液晶材料104混溶。优选地,聚合物前体在所述混合物内的浓度小于10wt%,更优选小于3wt%,和最优选小于2wt%。
两个基底101和108分别在内表面处具有透明电极102和107,且取向膜103和106分别进一步在透明电极102和107上形成。含电极和取向膜的基底分别形成涂布的基底110和111。液晶材料104和聚合物105在涂布的基底110和111之间密封。对取向膜103和106进行定向处理,使得在自基底101和108的垂直方向略微倾斜的方向上引起取向。
若如图1(a)所示,不施加电场,则液晶材料104以及也优选聚合物105平行地位于与基底的垂直方向略微倾斜的方向上。在这一状态下,折射指数不具有局部变化,结果它是透明的。当施加电压到透明电极102和107上时,液晶104开始朝与基底平行的方向进一步倾斜,和所述聚合物同时开始在电场方向上移动,以与液晶分子相撞,这将引起光散射状态,和器件变得浑浊。
由于在不施加电压情况下所述器件处于透明状态和当施加合适的电压时处于散射状态,因此可能的是从透明转换成不透明或者中间透明态,这提供不同的亮度水平。因此,对于图1的透明器件来说,亮态是透射状态,这对应于图1a,而不透明状态对应于图1b。
优选地,所述器件进一步包括一个或两个偏振片,其优点是较高的对比度。对于图1的透射器件来说,偏振片113和114可排列在器件的两个侧面上,如图2所示。优选地,两个偏振片的偏振方向彼此交叉,对于在附图平面内的方向来说,如箭头115所示,和对于与附图平面垂直的方向来说,如圆116所示。在采用根据方向115的偏振方向情况下,例如来自图2a顶部的垂直入射的光通过偏振片113线性偏振。只要不施加电压到器件上,如图2a所示,则垂直取向的液晶材料没有改变光的偏振状态,和因此,在穿过复合层109之后光的偏振方向仍然沿着方向115,和因此,它被偏振片114阻止。因此,图2a对应于暗态。
当施加合适的电压到电极上时,如图2b所示,复合层转变为散射模式。在采用根据方向115的偏振方向情况下,从图2a的顶部入射的光被偏振片113线性偏振。在复合层中,光被散射,与此同时,其使光消偏,这取决于散射效率。当在施加较高电压的情况下散射变得更强烈时,随着电压增加一直到最大值,消偏增加。结果,消偏的光可在底部部分穿过偏振片114。在对于最大透射来说所施加的电压下,图2b对应于亮态。对于中间电压来说,可调节在暗态与亮态之间的任何灰度水平。由于在图2a的断开状态下的光透射主要取决于偏振片的消光比,因此可实现非常高的对比度。若光从倾斜方向入射,则在断开状态下,垂直取向的液晶材料的折射指数各向异性(图2a)会引起光的偏振状态改变,其结果是部分光可穿过偏振片114,这对于倾斜入射光来说,降低了对比度。为了改进倾斜入射光的性能,补偿箔(例如负的c-板)可被插入偏振片113和偏振片114之间的任何位置,其方式与它在可商购的垂直取向的多-区LCD内进行的一样。优选地,补偿层在基底108和偏振片113和/或基底101和偏振片114之间。若施加电压(图2b),则倾斜入射的光在高对称下散射,其效果是,亮度对视角不具有强烈的依赖性。因此,具有两个交叉偏振片的散射型VA-LCD(图2)提供对称视角性能且不需要复杂像素细分,如在公知的多-区VA-LCD内进行的。这一优点导致降低的生产成本以及降低的复杂性。
在本发明的优选实施方案中,在与观察者一侧相对的基底上排列反射板,使得所述器件可以反射模式操作。反射板可在观察者看到的基底前面或后方。优选地,电极形成为反射板。若反射板在复合层109和基底之一之间,则所述基底可以是不透明的。
通过下述实施例,更加具体地解释本发明:
实施例1
在两个基底101和108的表面上,通过溅射方法形成透明的导电膜ITO(氧化锡铟)。在电极的顶部上,使用旋涂器,涂布用于垂直取向的材料4811(获自Nissan ChemicalIndustries,Ltd.)。在80℃的热板上,预烘烤涂布的基底110和111达60秒,然后在200℃的烘箱内烘烤40分钟。因此,形成厚度分别为约100nm的用于垂直取向的取向膜103和106。使用其中聚酯非织造织物(纤维长度:2.0mm)缠绕在直径为30mm的辊上且压力设定为约40g的擦拭设备,对取向膜103和106的表面进行擦拭处理10次。将直径为3μm的隔片铺展到涂布的基底110上,将二元环氧粘合剂涂布在基底110的外周边,及固定涂布的基底110和111,使得池厚度为3μm。
作为液晶104,使用No.820050(获自LCC Corporation),NI点(向列型-各向同性转变温度)100.5℃,介电各向异性Δε=-5.69。相对于含液晶和聚合物前体的混合物,作为聚合物前体添加用量为0.7-2.0wt%的可UV固化的双官能单体
作为聚合引发剂,基于所述双官能单体的用量,添加用量为15wt%的Irgacure907(获自BASF AG)。通过利用毛细力,将液晶、可光聚合的单体和聚合引发剂的混合物注入到基底101和108之间的空间内。将液晶池置于温度为101-103℃的热板上,并在强度为5.0mW/cm2(352nm)的UV箱(由KENIS Ltd.制造)内,用紫外射线辐照32分钟,于是通过聚合所述聚合物前体,形成聚合物105。
可如下所述解释因此制备的器件的操作原理。图1中所示的液晶104和聚合物105示出了类似的折射指数各向异性,在与定向方向平行的方向上的折射指数为约1.52,和在与定向方向垂直的方向上的折射指数为约1.73。因此,如图1(a)所示,当不施加电场时,液晶104和聚合物105被取向成相同的方向,和折射指数相同为1.52,结果光没有被散射,和器件是透明的。
相反,如图1(b)所示,当在电极102和107之间施加AC电场时,在沉积到表面上的聚合物105的方向保持不变,但液晶104开始在与电场方向交叉的方向上旋转。在这一情况下,有效的折射指数增加到约1.73,和由沉积到表面上的聚合物的1.52的折射指数生成约0.21的折射指数差。此外,分散到液晶内的聚合物105开始朝电场移动,和其分子运动引起与液晶分子碰撞,生成动态散射。因此,出现因在表面处聚合物105和液晶104之间的折射指数差异导致的散射以及由于聚合物105和液晶104碰撞导致的动态散射。
图3中示出了使用含0.7wt%双官能单体的液晶混合物制造的用于增加和降低器件电压的电压透射率特征。将频率为60Hz的0-11V的方形波施加到液晶器件上。关于透射率强度的测量,通过用He-Ne激光(632.8nm)辐照液晶器件,并通过Pin型光电二极管S3883(Hamamatsu Photonics K.K.)观察光,从而进行散射强度的测量。根据图3的两条曲线可理解,可获得基本上没有滞后的良好的显示性能。
实施例2
与实施例1中一样,通过在具有导电ITO膜的基底101和108上旋涂,施加垂直取向材料4811的层(Nissan Chemical Industries,Ltd.)。在热处理之后,对取向膜103和106进行擦拭处理10次。将直径为3μm的隔片铺展到涂布的基底101上,将二元环氧粘合剂涂布在基底101的外周边,及固定涂布的基底101和102,使得池厚度为3μm。
作为液晶104,使用No.820050(获自LCC Corporation),NI点100.5℃,介电各向异性Δε=-5.69。作为聚合物前体,相对于含液晶和聚合物前体的混合物添加用量为0.7-2.0wt%的可UV固化的单官能单体
作为聚合引发剂,基于单官能单体的用量,添加用量为15wt%的Irgacure 907(获自BASF AG)。通过利用毛细力,将液晶、可光聚合的单体和聚合引发剂的混合物注入到基底101和108之间的空间内。将液晶池置于温度为101-103℃的热板上,并在强度为5.0mW/cm2(352nm)的UV箱(由KENIS Ltd.制造)内,用紫外射线辐照32分钟。
图4中示出了使用含0.7wt%单官能单体的液晶混合物制造的用于增加和降低器件电压的电压透射率特征。将频率为60Hz的0-11V的方形波施加到液晶器件上。关于透射率强度的测量,通过用He-Ne激光(632.8nm)辐照液晶器件,并通过Pin型光电二极管S3883(Hamamatsu Photonics K.K.)观察光,从而进行散射强度的测量。根据图4的两条曲线,可理解,可获得基本上没有滞后的良好的显示性能。
对比例1

对比例2
在制备这一对比例中使用与实施例2中使用的相同材料,和使用相同的制备方法,所不同的是没有进行擦拭处理来给取向膜的表面赋予取向。也就是说,在两个基底101和108的表面上,通过溅射方法形成透明导电膜ITO(氧化锡铟)。使用旋涂器,采用用于垂直取向的材料4811的层(获自Nissan Chemical Industries,Ltd.),涂布这些基底101和108,并将涂布的材料在80℃热板上预烘烤60秒,然后在200℃的烘箱内烘烤40分钟。于是形成各自厚度为约100nm的用于垂直取向的取向膜103和106。将直径为3μm的隔片铺展到涂布的基底101上,将二元环氧粘合剂涂布在基底101的外周边,及固定涂布的基底101和102,使得池厚度为3μm。

图7中示出了本发明和对比例的转换工序的概述。图7(a)示出了对比例,其中液晶分子垂直于基底取向。此外,聚合物以相分离和沉积到基底表面上(即沉淀到取向膜上)的材料以及以分散到液晶内的材料这两种形式存在。当施加AC电场时,在液晶器件内部处的液晶分子104开始在与电场方向垂直交叉的方向上取向。所述聚合物同时开始跟随液晶的移动而移动。然而,通过在沉积到表面上的聚合物固定在基底界面处的液晶分子,如US2003'048'401 A1中所述,使得它们几乎不可移动。在没有优选的倾斜方向情况下,与基底垂直取向液晶分子,使得在一个方向上没有测定在液晶器件内部液晶的旋转方向,而是开始以随机的方向旋转。结果,如图7(a)(2)中所示,生成在液晶取向内的不连续点(旋转位移)120,并形成Schlieren结构。当电压进一步增加时,如图7(a)(3)中所示,出现电流体的不稳定状态,并形成线性Williams区。当电压进一步增加时,如图7(a)(4)中所示,通过在器件内部聚合物的移动,诱导液晶分子的散射。滞后的原因是如图7(a)(2)中所示形成了Schlieren结构,并通过体系的能级确定不连续点(旋转位移)的形成,它是在电压升高和下降时不连续点(旋转位移)的形成电压之差导致的。
图7(b)示出了本发明的转换工序。采用与基底垂直处倾斜液晶分子的预倾角,取向液晶分子104。此外,如对比例中一样,聚合物105以沉淀到基底表面上(即通过相分离沉积到取向膜上)的材料以及以分散到液晶内的材料这两种形式存在。当施加AC电场时,在与电场方向垂直交叉的方向上,在液晶器件内部的液晶分子开始取向。在其内部的聚合物同时开始跟随液晶的移动而移动。此刻,通过在沉积到表面上的聚合物,固定在基底界面处的液晶分子,如US 2003'048'401 A1中所公开的,使得它们可几乎不移动。液晶分子从与基底垂直处略微倾斜取向,使得可在一个方向上测定在液晶器件内部液晶的旋转方向。因此,在液晶器件内部没有生成不连续点(旋转位移),从而没有形成Schl ieren结构(图7(b)(2))。当电压进一步增加时,如图7(b)(3)中所示,出现电流体的不稳定状态,并形成线性Williams区。当电压进一步增加时,如图7(b)(4)中所示,通过在器件内部聚合物的移动,诱导液晶分子散射。
在本发明的实施例中,使用擦拭基底表面的方法来取向液晶,并且在液晶聚合物复合层内的聚合物在自基底垂直方向的某一方向上略微倾斜,但本发明不限于上述实施方案,和可使用任何方式,其中包括光取向、其中用UV射线辐照同时向其中施加电场的PSA方式等。
替代在本发明的实施例中使用的光反应性单体,同样可使用可热聚合的单体。
对比例3
类似于实施例1,使用相同的材料,制造池,但区别在于在81℃下进行最终液晶池的辐照。因此,在液晶混合物的NI点以下(100.5℃)引发聚合反应。
当施加AC电压到池的电极上时,也可观察到散射状态,但开始电压比实施例1中池的开始电压高约3倍。另外,散射效率低于实施例1。
Claims (15)
1.一种制造含聚合物的散射型液晶器件的方法,其包括下述步骤:
-提供具有电极(102,107)的两个基底(101,108),
-通过以基底之间具有间隙且电极在内侧彼此面对的方式,排列所述两个基底,来制造池;
-用含具有负的介电各向异性的液晶材料(104)和聚合物前体的液晶混合物填充所述池;
-在用所述液晶混合物填充所述池之前或之后,对所述液晶混合物施加取向处理,使得在从法向向基底倾斜的预倾角下定向所述液晶混合物,和

4.权利要求1的方法,其中在制造池之前,在所述基底(101,108)之一上至少形成用于垂直取向的光取向层,和在另一步骤中,将光取向层暴露于取向光下,使得在取向层内生成具有预倾角的取向。
5.权利要求1或2的方法,其中在用所述液晶混合物填充所述池之后,使用电场或磁场来生成相对于基底的法向具有预倾角的液晶材料(104)的倾斜取向。
6.前述任何一项权利要求的方法,其中相对于基底的法向的预倾角为0.2-10°。
7.前述任何一项权利要求的方法,其中所述聚合物前体在所述液晶混合物内的比例为小于10wt%。
8.一种含有聚合物的散射型液晶器件,其包括:
-限制在所述两个基底之间的具有液晶相的复合层(109),其中所述复合层(109)包括具有负的介电各向异性的液晶材料(104)和分散于其中的聚合物(105),
-当不施加电场时,相对于垂直方向具有预倾角的液晶,
其特征在于,已使用权利要求1-7任何一项的方法制造所述器件。
9.权利要求8的含有聚合物的散射型VA液晶器件,其特征在于,当不施加电压时,在没有任何额外层例如偏振片的情况下测量的所述器件针对可见光具有大于90%的透射率,和一旦施加合适的电压,则所述器件处于散射状态下。
10.权利要求8或9的含有聚合物的散射型液晶器件,其中由单官能、双官能或多官能丙酸酯制备所述聚合物(105)。
11.权利要求8-10任何一项的含有聚合物的散射型液晶器件,其中所述聚合物(105)与液晶材料(104)相分离。
12.权利要求8-11任何一项的含有聚合物的散射型液晶器件,其中当施加合适的电压到电极上时,对于入射光来说,所述器件变为散射状态。
13.权利要求8-12任何一项的含有聚合物的散射型液晶器件,其中优选采用彼此垂直的偏振方向,将偏振片(113,114)附着到所述池的每一侧上。
14.权利要求8-12任何一项的含有聚合物的散射型液晶器件,其进一步包括反射板。
15.权利要求14的含有聚合物的散射型液晶器件,其特征在于额外的偏振片(113,114)。
