EMI0001.0007
Dans cette formule, X représente un groupe hy- droxy ou carboxy ;

Process for the preparation of novel metallizable azo dyes The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of novel metallizable azo dyes of formula (I) which. can be transformed into their metal complexes, in particular those of cobalt and chromium
EMI0001.0007
In this formula, X represents a hydroxy or carboxy group;
the benzene ring A may be substituted by nonionogenic substituents such as chlorine or bromine atoms and nitro, alkoxy, alkyl, acylamino, sulfonamido, mono- or dialkylsulfonamido, hydroxyalkyl- or alkoxyalkylsulfonamido, morpholylsulfonamido or alkylsulfonyl groups.
The process of the invention is characterized in that an amine of formula
EMI0001.0023
and in that the diazo derivative obtained is copulated, preferably in an aqueous alkaline medium, with the monomaleamide of 1-amino-7-naphthol or 7-naphthol-1-maleamic acid, of formula
EMI0001.0030
The latter compound is easily prepared with excellent yields, for example,
by heating a substantially equimolecular mixture of amino-1-naphthol-7 and maleic anhydride, optionally in the presence of small amounts of an organic solvent.
The new dyes of formula (I) are capable of being metallized according to any known general methods. In particular, the metallization can be carried out by metallizing treatments leading to complexes containing per dye molecule less than one complexed metal atom.
All the methods leading to the formation of such complexes can be used, for example, chromating in the presence of amides or ammonium salts of carboxylic acids, alkali salts of aliphatic or aromatic o-hydroxycarboxylic acids or of amino-carboxylic acids, heating in alkaline salts of aliphatic mono-carboxylic acids containing water of crystallization in the presence of a metallizing agent,
chromating in the presence of organic solvents such as ethylene glycol, heating in an alkaline medium in the presence of a chromium, nickel, copper, iron or manganese salt, possibly in the presence of an aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid , the reaction of the non-metallized dye with a metallizing agent in the presence of another metallizable dye,
reacting the non-metallized dye with a metalliferous dye containing one metal atom per dye molecule.
It has been observed, in particular, that chromium or cobalt complexes comprising less than one metal atom per dye molecule generally have excellent affinity in a neutral or weakly acidic medium for animal fibers or synthetic fibers of superpolyamides or superpolyurethanes. The presence of a free carboxyl group gives the dyes obtained according to the invention a
solubility generally greater than that of the known dyes derived from acylamino-1-naphthol -7, lacking this group. Moreover, this presence does not generally affect the strengths to wet proofs of the shades obtained, a completely unexpected result. These form a wide range including grays, blues, olives, browns, exhibiting excellent fastness to light. In the following examples, the parts indicated are by weight unless otherwise indicated.
Example 1 23 parts of N-isopropylsulfonamido-4-amino-2-amino phenol are pasted in 150 parts of water and 20 parts of a solution of hydrochloric acid lOn; 6.9 parts of sodium nitrite dissolved in 30 parts of water are gradually added to the solution cooled between 0 and 5o C.
The aqueous suspension of the diazo derivative, neutralized with sodium carbonate, is poured into a solution cooled to 50 C of 25.7 parts of naphthol -7 maleamic-1 in 150 parts of water to the addition of 8.2 parts of sodium hydroxide and 20 parts of sodium carbonate.
When coupling is complete, the dye is precipitated by addition of 15 parts of sodium chloride and filtered. The wet azo dye can be dissolved in 1000 parts of water, and the solution heated to the boil with a sodium chromosalicylate solution corresponding to 2.8 parts of chromium. After complete metallization, the dye is precipitated by addition of sodium chloride and isolated by filtration ; it dyes the wool from a neutral or weakly acetic bath in a gray-blue shade endowed with excellent fastnesses general.
Naphthol acid-? maleamic-1 is prepared as follows: 80 parts of amino-1 naphthol-? in 100 parts of isopropyl alcohol heated to 700 C, then gradually add, with stirring, 49 parts of maleic anhydride and hand holds the reaction mixture for one hour between 70-75 C. Naphthol-? maleamic-1 which precipitates as it is formed is isolated by filtration.
The crude acid is purified by dissolving it in 10% sodium carbonate solution, separating out by filtration a small quantity of insoluble impurity and reprecipitating by acidification with a solution of concentrated hydrochloric acid; finally, the product is isolated by filtration. Example 2 14.4 parts of 4-chloro-2-amino phenol are nitrogenous in the same way as the base of Example 1.
The solution of the diazo derivative obtained is coupled with 25.7 parts of naphthol-? maleamic-1.
The isolated azo dye can be dissolved in 1000 parts of water and treated at the boil with a solution of sodium cobaltotartrate, corresponding to 3.2 parts of cobalt.
The metallic dye gives on wool, in a neutral or weakly acetic bath, a lacquered gray shade with excellent general fastnesses. The corresponding chrome complex dyes the wool gray. The following table summarizes some similar examples
