Toaster Toasters are known provided with a timer device in which a predetermined period of time is provided by a movable element such as the rotating toothed wheel of a rack and pinion mechanism, the rack of which is arranged. to trigger a mechanism at the end of said period of time.
The present invention relates to the production of a toaster provided with a timer device comprising a movable element set in motion when a toasting operation begins and which commands the stopping of this operation after having accomplished a movement. predetermined, timer device which is sensitive to variations in the ambient temperature in that the speed of the movement of said element is a function of this temperature, so that the toasting time is also a function.
For this purpose, the toaster, object of the invention, is characterized by the fact that this movable element moves in the field of a magnet, this element and the mant being made of materials such as an effect of braking slowing down said movement is produced by the magnet on the element, and that, moreover, the magnitude of this braking effect varies as a function of the ambient temperature so that the lapse of time required by the moving element to accomplish said predetermined displacement varies as a function of the ambient temperature.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention. In this drawing Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an electric toaster with timer device, the cover of which has been removed and some parts cut away. Fig. 2 is an elevation. at the end of the toaster in fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged end elevation of the timer device of FIG. 1 to 3, most of the front plate having been cut, and fig. 5 is a section taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 4.
The toaster shown comprises a frame 10 mounted on a base 11 and supporting four electric heating elements in the form of a plate, spaced apart vertically, 12. These elements are arranged in pairs, so as to spare from top to bottom. two cavities in which the toast is placed, which then has a heating element on each side.
On each side of the frame there is a pair of rods 13, 14 (fig. 1) which are articulated at 15, 16 on one side of the frame and carry on the other side a transverse plate 17 which is thus susceptible. to be moved vertically with respect to the frame 10. The upper rod exceeds the pivot 15, and carries, at its end, a spring 18 attached to the base 11 at 19. The springs 18 thus exert on the transverse plate 17 a directed force to the top.
The plate 17 carries a pair of horizontal rods, one of which is shown at 21 in FIG. 3, each of them being placed longitudinally inside the cavities receiving the toast and por both side fingers on which the bread is placed.
A block of insulating material 22 is fixed at 23 to the base plate and carries a pair of contacts designed to be short-circuited by a contact bar carried by a toggle switch 24 of insulating material, arranged to swing around. a knife edge 25 fixed to the frame 10. The switch 24 is actuated by springs, one of which is shown at 26, fixed. to arms 27 forming part of a transverse part connecting the rods 13.
The circuit is closed when the plate 17 moves down and it is open when it moves up.
A latching arm 29 is articulated at 28 on the base 11. It carries a heel 31 which engages in a step 32 of the transverse plate 17 when it moves downwards as a result of the action of a torsion spring 33. The plate 17, as well as the support legs 21, are thus maintained in their lower position.
The arm 29 moves so as to release the transverse plate 17 by the play of the release mechanism placed under the control of the timer device, as will be described below.
A box 34 is mounted on the base 11 next to the latching arm 29 and carries a pin 35 mounted between its walls so as to be able to rotate. On this axis is mounted a spiral cam 36. An arm articulated on a horizontal pin 38 is applied against the edge of the cam 36 by a torsion spring 39. It carries at its free end a vertical bar 41 extended by a inclined edge 42. The bar 41 carries a longitudinal slide 43 in which slides a pin 44 fixed to the upper end of the arm 29.
The timer device 45 is fixed on the frame sis 10, above the box 34. As shown in FIG. 4, this device comprises two spaced metal plates 46 and 47, a guide channel 48 fixed to the front plate 46, in which slides a rack 49. A pinion 51, which is mounted on a pin 52 located between the two plates 46, 47, -has its teeth which engage in the rack.
The pinion 51 is connected to an aluminum disc 54 by the intermediary of a speed multiplier gear train and the disc 54 can rotate between the pole pieces of a permanent magnet 55. The rack 49 carries a part 56 comprising a transverse bar 57 and a fork 58 between the flanges of which a roller 59 can rotate.
A pair of coil springs 61 is connected, on the one hand, to the bar 57 and, on the other hand, to lugs 62 of the transverse plate 17, so that, when this plate moves downwards , the springs 61 are stretched, exert a tension on the bar 57 and the rack 49 which they drive downwards, which has the effect of rotating the pinion 51 and, through the multiplier gear train, disc 54, at a much higher speed.
The upper end of the bar 41 passes between the flanges of the fork 58 and, when the rack moves downwards, the roller 59 rests on the edge 42 of said bar and causes it to swing around. its articulation, so as to free the heel 31 of the transverse pla 17 and to allow the latter to move towards. the top under the action of the springs 18.
The permanent magnet 55 is mounted on one of the arms. an angled lever 63 articulated at 64 on the plate 46, the other arm of this lever being connected by a rod 65 to one end of a strip 66, the other end of which is fixed to the remote part of the frame, the strip 66 comprising a bimetallic part 68.
The transverse plate 17 carries, on each side of the timer device 45, two converging arms 69, the common end of which protrudes outside the housing of the apparatus (not shown) and carries a handle serving to lower the transverse plate. The axis 35 is provided with a button which protrudes outside the housing, and whose rotation drives the cam so as to move the bar 41 up or down and to modify its position relative to the edge 42, when the transverse plate 17 is at its lowest position.
In the above description, it was indicated that the disc 54 was made of aluminum, it is however clear that it can be made of any other paramagnetic material, such as: non-ferrous metal or alloy of non-ferrous metals, such as, for example, a copper alloy. It is well known that when such a disc rotates in the field of a magnet, the eddy currents developed in the disc cause a braking effect.
According to Curie's law, the magnetic susceptibility of paramagnetic matter per unit of mass varies inversely with the absolute temperature; also, as the ambient temperature increases, the magnetic susceptibility of the disc decreases, which results in a decrease in eddy currents and, consequently, in the braking effect.
The variations in temperature affect the magnet as well as the disc, but the variation in power of the magnet, within the limits of variation of the ambient temperature, is very small and the variation of the braking effect is almost entirely. dependent on the variation in magnetism susceptibility of the disc material. The magnet is preferably made of a diffusion hardening alloy which is subjected during its manufacture to a final heat treatment above 5001, C. These alloys have a stable structure when used at lower temperatures.
The rods 13, 14 can be made of a metal with a low coefficient of expansion, and the expansion of which up to 300 ° C. is negligible (this temperature corresponding approximately to the ambient temperature when the toaster is in use). By constructing these parts with such metal, their temperature has little or no effect on the position of the cross plate 17 and hence on the operation of the ratchet arm 29.
For the use of the toaster, slices of bread are placed on the supports 21 and the handle of the arms 69 is pressed downwards, so that the supports 21 and the cross plate 17 are moved downwards and the slices of bread placed between the heating elements 12, while the step 32 engages the heel 31 of the arm 29. The downward movement of the transverse plate 17 raises the far end of the rods 13 by tensioning the springs 18 , and causes the switch 2.4 to close the supply circuit of the heating elements 12. This same movement causes the tension of the springs 61 which pull down the bar 57 and the rack 49.
The downward movement of the rack 49 causes the rotation of the pinion 51 and, through the intermediary of the gear train 53, that of the disc 54, at a much higher speed. The roller 59 moves downwards until it meets the edge 42 of the bar 41 which it pushes outwards by driving the latching arm 29 and possibly releasing the heel 31 of the step 32. The transverse plate 17 is then free to move upwards under the effect of the action. springs 18, which causes the switch to open. The toast is then presented on the support 21 to be removed.
It is clear that the duration of the toasting depends on the distance to be traveled by the roller 59 before causing sufficient displacement of the arm to release the transverse plate, and on the speed of rotation of the pinion. The distance to be traveled by the roller is adjusted by hand by acting on the axis 35 to move the arm 37 and the bar 41 up or down. The speed of rotation of the pinion depends on the braking effect of the magnet 55 on the disc 54 and, given that this effect decreases with increasing temperature, it is obvious that the duration of the toasting, for a given setting of the bar 41, will go down as the temperature of the toaster goes up.
It has been found that the variation in the braking effect due to the variation in the magnetic susceptibility of the disc could, in certain cases, be too great to ensure a constant degree of scorch. It is possible to provide a complementary device for adjusting the braking effect by moving the magnet 55 relative to the disc 54, as shown in the drawings. The magnet 55 is brought closer to the disc 54 when the ambient temperature rises due to the arc of the bimetallic element 68 which, through the intermediary of the rod 65, causes the lever 63 carrying the magnet to pivot. around its axis.
Instead of being by the displacement of the magnet, the compensation for an excessive reduction in the scorching time can be obtained by magnetic shunting of the magnet. The shunt used is formed by a suitable metal plate, mounted against one of the faces of the magnet parallel to the disc 54 and which acts by reducing the intensity of the field of the magnet. As the action of this metal on the magnet decreases as the temperature rises, the braking action of the magnet on the disc increases as the ambient temperature rises. When this magnetic shunt is used, the position of the magnet with respect to the disc is invariable.
