Machine for melting and composing letterpress lines provided with an apparatus for controlling its operation from signals recorded on a tape The present invention relates to a machine for melting and composing letterpress lines provided with an apparatus for controlling its sound. operation from coded signals recorded on a recording tape, and which, in response to probing a coded elevator signal, actuates a mechanism for lifting an elevator in the melter and composing the letterpress lines,
so that all the matrices and space-bands corresponding to a typographic line are lifted for the plate-making of this line. This machine is characterized in that the mechanism for lifting the elevator is put into action by the control of a lever device comprising two separate levers mounted so as to be able to pivot, the two levers being normally locked between them and being likely to cause the lift to rise in response to the survey:
of a first up coded signal, but one of said levers disengaging from the other lever as a result of probing the first up coded signal until a subsequent coded signal of a different nature has been probed on the recording tape, so as to prevent said lever device from responding to a succession of upscaling coded signals immediately following said first upward signal.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of part of the control apparatus of the type described in Swiss patent 325676, in which the mechanism for lifting the elevator of the machine is mounted; fig. 2 shows a detail of the mechanism of FIG. 1; fig. 3 is a plan view of part of the apparatus of FIG. 1 and shows said mechanism on a larger scale; and fig. 4 is an elevation view of the elevator of the machine for melting and composing the typographic lines.
Referring to the figures, a particular selector lever 8, which can pivot on a common rod 9, is biased, in its rest position, by a spring 11 which tends to return it to the rear position, and is capable of being selected upon receipt of an up-signal. While moving forwards, it engages in a T-shaped lever device for controlling the elevator, indicated in the drawing by the reference 13, and it causes the rotation of this device 13 in the sensing direction. trorsum around the journal 14, overcoming the action of the spring 15, for the purpose which will be explained later.
The selective actuation of the selector lever 8 is controlled by a perforated strip 16 (fig. 1), which is driven step by step through a recording reader device comprising a set of reader elements 17, which are mounted so as to be able, in turn, to be able to control the switchable positioning of a group of transfer levers 18, which control the positioning of a corresponding group of connection levers 19, connected to the code bar set 21, which control the selection of a group of selection bars, shown in the drawing by the elevator selector lever 8.
As indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, the lever device 13, which controls the elevator, is composed of two distinct parts, that is to say of an arm 12 and of a main lever 22, these two parts being all two pivoting mounted on the journal 14 fixed to the frame of the machine.
The spring 15, connected to the arm 12, tends to rotate the latter in the dextror- sum direction, and the spring 23 tends to cause the lever 22 to rotate in the same direction. On a pivot 20 carried by the arm 12 is mounted a locking piece 24, having a pawl 25 in engagement with a vertically directed latch 26 of lever 22. As will emerge later, locking piece 24 acts as an articulated piece to ensure the unitary action. of device 13.
The locking piece 24, in its rest position, is biased in the senestrorsum direction (looking at the fi. <B> 3) </B> by a spring 27, and is pressed against a stop 28. The locking piece Lock 24 is furthermore for view of an arm 29, which comes into engagement with a pawl 31 of a T-shaped lever 32, which can pivot on a pivot 33 fixed to the machine. The T-shaped lever 32 is subjected to the action of a spring 34, which biases it in the senestrorsum direction, so that its lower arm 35 is constantly pressed against the arm 36 of a rod 37, which can rotate in a U-shaped support 38.
At its other end, the rod 37 has an arm 39, the free end of which, in the rest position, rests on the core 41 of a caliper 42, supported by a shaft 43 and being able to pivot on the latter. . The caliper 42 (fig. 2) is provided with a rod 44, which is arranged perpendicular to the connection levers 19, and which is capable of engaging with a series of cams 45 in the form of teeth, each connection lever 19 being provided with one of these cams. The positions which can be taken by the cams 45 can vary depending on the relative positions of the connection levers 19, the rod 44 being placed on the path of the cams 45 by the action of a spring 46.
The T-shaped device 13, which controls the elevator, can move as a whole, as long as the arm 12 and the lever 22 are locked to each other by the locking piece 24. Then, during its movement to the side. 'front, the lever 8 engages with the arm 12 of the device 13, and causes the rotation of the latter, in the senestrorsum direction, around the journal 14 (fig. 1 and 3), overcoming the action of the springs 15 and 23.
During this rotation, the lever 22 pulls the connecting rod 47, which swings, in the dextrorsum direction, the elbow lever 48, which, by means of its arm 49, forces the release lever 51 into its active position for the withdrawal of the controlled element 52 of the clutch 53 (fig. 1), and thus stops the shaft 54 which controls the recording reader device. The other arm of lever 22 (fig. 1 and 3) is connected to a slider 55, which, during the rotation of lever 22, is pushed to the right (fig. 1) until its offset part 56 is locked behind a shoulder 57 of a spring lever 58.
A vertical tab 59 of the slide 55 is articulated at the end of a floating lever 61, so that the slide 55 drives the floating lever 61 in its movement.
When the number of dies which accumulate on the composter block of the machine for melting and composing the typographical lines reaches a value sufficient to allow the plate-making of a complete line, an elevator control signal, recorded on the perforated tape 16, causes the selection of the selector levers 8 and the stopping of the shaft 54 which controls the recording player, as described above. This selection rotates the device 13, and moves the connecting rod 47 to the left and the slide 55 to the right.
The connecting rod 47 being connected to the release lever 51, its movement to the left (looking at Figs. 1 and 2) brings the release lever 51 to a position where it can engage with a bevelled lug, not shown. , carried by the controlled element 52 of the spring clutch 53. The movement of the shaft 54 continues until the bevelled tab engages the release lever 51, after which the tab enters a orifice 62 by acting through its bevelled edge 63 on a corresponding inclined face of the lever, which causes the stopping of the shaft 54.
In this action, the bevelled tab and the controlled element 52 are forced to perform a withdrawal movement relative to the driving element 64 of the clutch 53, and are temporarily held by a retaining lever 65 (fi-. 2), the roller carried by this lever being biased by a spring so that it falls behind the shoulder 66 of a disc 67, and further forcing the controlled element 52 to rotate and slide axially by the effect of the tab to disengage from the driving element 64.
When moving to the right, the slider 55 is locked by the shoulder 57 of the spring lever 58 and communicates a similar movement to one end of the float lever 61, to which it is connected at 68. The opposite end of the floating lever 61 is clamped in a yoke 69, which ends a connecting rod 71, the opposite end of which (fig. 4) is articulated to a control lever 70 of the delivery slide in the melting and composing machine lines, and which is intended to cooperate with the arm 60 of the delivery slide in the manner disclosed in the aforementioned patent.
At an intermediate point between its ends, the floating lever 61 carries a stop 72, intended to cooperate with the vertical arm 73 of an elbow lever 74, whose horizontal arm 75 can engage with a release arm 76. The arm 76 acts on the clutch 77 in the same way as the release lever 51 acts on the clutch 53, as described above. The clutch 77 actuates the elevator control shaft 78, on which are mounted an elevator cam 79 and a release cam 81. Power for the entrainment of shafts 54 and 78 is supplied from a suitable power source, through gears 80 and 90.
The rotation of the shaft 78, on which the elevator cam 79 is mounted, causes the lifting of the elevator control lever 82, which in turn imparts movement to the control member 83. elevator control, which extends transversely to the machine. The left end of the member 83, (fig. 4) carries an arm 93. The elevator 94 is connected to the arm 93 by means of the connecting rod 95. The contour of the cam 79 is such that it causes , through the arm 82 and the member 83, the movement of the arm 93 to perform the raising and lowering of the elevator 94.
When, after a previous operation, the elevator 94 has been returned to its initial position, and then another elevator signal is received, the selector lever 8 is actuated forwards (looking at fig. 1). and turns the device 13 in the senestorsum direction, thereby causing, by means of the connecting rod 47, the stopping of the recording reader device, and the locking of the slide 55 against the shoulder 57, thus that it has been indicated above.
At the same time, the tab 59 is moved to the right and rotates the floating lever 61 in the reverse direction around the yoke 69, which serves as a pivot, so that the stop 72 rotates the elbow lever 74 in the direction of the yoke. sense senestrorsum to release the arm 76, which disengages from the clutch 77 under the action of a spring, thus allowing the clutch 77 to become active and rotate the shaft 78 of the elevator. Clutches 53 and 77 remain engaged for only one revolution.
A finger 84 (Fig. 1), carried by the elevator control arm 82, is arranged so as to extend above a horizontal arm 85 of a release yoke 86, pivoted in 87 and biased by a spring 88. The yoke 86 is provided with an arm 89, by means of which it can engage with the upper end of the release lever 51. During the lifting of the lever 82, when the mechanism Elevator is initially set in motion, the finger 84 is lifted and moves away from the arm. 85, which allows the spring 88 to rotate the caliper 86. The disengaging lever 51 is thus held during the rotation cycle of the clutch 53, in the desired position to disengage the clutch 53 from the clutch. shaft 54 commanding the record player to stop it.
When arm 82 is lowered again, after the elevator has delivered its load of dies to the delivery ram, finger 84 again engages horizontal arm 85 of yoke 86, thereby allowing the lever to move. clutch 51 to move away from its active position and immediately release the driven element 52 to establish the drive coupling with the shaft 54 and start the operation of reading the perforated strip again.
During the working cycle of the elevator and during the rotation of the shaft 78, the lever 22 of the device 13 is held for a short period of time in its extreme senestrorsum position by means of the offset part 56 of the slide. 55, which engages with the shoulder 57 of the spring lever 58.
Shortly after shaft 78 has started to rotate, cam 81 for releasing lever 58 engages this lever and rotates it dextrorsum around pivot 91, at an angle sufficient to allow the slide 55 to disengage from the shoulder 57, thereby releasing the lever 22 which, under the action of the spring 23, is returned to its dextrorsum position. By thus causing the lever 22 to move, the spring 23 also releases the disengaging lever 51 by means of the connecting rod 47,
at the same time as the floating lever 61 is returned to its normal position by its connection 68 with the slider 55, allowing the crank lever 74 to come back to the desired position to hold the release arm 76 in. its effective blocking position.
The shaft 78 then completes its cycle and comes to rest again, when the bevelled tab of the driven element 92 of the clutch again enters the opening of the release arm 76, in the same manner as that already described. for clutch 53, when elevator shaft 78 is thus actuated, it performs one complete rotation, during which it performs all of its functions, including holding tape drive shaft 54 in its stop position and the subsequent release of this shaft and its own disengagement.
The mechanism described above avoids repeated actuation of the elevator 94 when consecutive elevator signals appear on the web 16. In other words, the mechanism described allows the elevator 94 of the melting machine. and dial typography lines is activated in response to a first lift signal, but the lift signals,> immediately following the first lift signal have no effect on the machine. Thus, when the first step-up signal has been received, the effect on the actuation of shafts 54 and 78 is as previously described.
When the device 13 controlling the elevator turns in the senestorsum direction by the action of the selector lever 8, the locking piece 24, thanks to the engagement of its pawl 25 with the latch 26, causes the movement, like a all of the lever 22 and the arm 12. However, when the device 13 has turned in the senestorsum direction by a sufficient angle, the arm 29 of the locking piece 24 is locked by the pawl 31 of the T-lever 32.
Then, when the device 13 controlling the elevator tries to return to its dextrorsum position, the arm 12 is pushed back because of the engagement between the arm 29 and the pawl 31, which, as a result of the dextrorsum movement of the lever 22 under the action of spring 23 causes a slight rotation of the locking part 24, this rotation being sufficient to release the pawl 25 from the cleat 26.
Thus, after the completion of the operation of the elevator as a result of the first elevator signal, the lever 22 returns to its initial position shown in FIG. 3, but the arm 12 only partially returns to its dextrorsal position, its complete rotation in the dextrorsal direction being limited by the combined action of the pawl 31 and the arm 29, so that the subsequent actuations of the selector lever 8, in response to elevating signals which immediately follow one another have no effect on the arm 12, and, consequently, on the lever 22 of the device 13 controlling the elevator.
The mechanism described allows the same recorded coded signal to act not only as a boost signal but also as a signal intended for other functions, for example for line advancement, this function possibly being a repetitive function. Thus, if the signals recorded on the tape are used to simultaneously control the operation of a melter and compose the letterpress lines and the operation of a telegraph page printer, the recorded signals, which serve to start the actuation of the elevator,
can also be used to start the line feed actuation (i.e. paper feed) in the page printer. Now, if it is desired to obtain a succession of line feed movements in the page printer, these movements can take place with the mechanism described without disturbing the automatic operation of the melting machine and composing the typography lines. - phiques,
since the first occurrence of the recorded signal causes simultaneously the actuation of the elevator in the machine and the operation of the line feed mechanism in the page printer, while other recorded signals of the same nature have no effect on the melting machine and composing the typographical lines, but repeat the actuation of the advancement mechanism in the page printer, once for each of the successive signals recorded.
Further, by using the lift signal for the aforementioned dual function, the signal which is usually employed for line advancement in the telegraphic printer can be intended for another function, for example for moving the magazine.
As long as the elevator signals are probed by the record reader, the arm 12 of the device 13 controlling the elevator remains in its locked position. However, when a signal of a different code is probed by the record player, the arm 12 is unlocked in the following manner. As has been said previously, as long as the connection levers 19 maintain their position which corresponds to a lifting signal, the caliper 42 remains at rest and the lever 32, the rod 37 and the arm 39 are not subjected to no movement.
However, as soon as the connection levers 19 are moved as a result of a different code signal, movement of one of the cams 45, to the right or to the left, temporarily lifts the rod 44 and rotates the shaft. caliper 42 in the senestrorsum direction around the pivot 43, which causes the senestrorsum movement of the rod 37, which, through the arm 36, rotates .in.
the dextrorsum direction the T-lever 32 on the pivot 33, to release the pawl 31 of the arm 29 of the locking piece 24, thus allowing the arm 12 of the positive device 13 to be returned to its initial position by the action of the spring 15. The arm 12 is thus returned to the position where it is ready to be actuated by the selector lever 8 in response to the next step-up signal. It follows that any change in the recorded signals results in the release of the locking piece 24, and the return to the normal position of the mechanism for the detection of the elevating signals.
