Additional patent to main patent no. 297020. Process for the production of an azo pigment. It has been found that a valuable azo pigment is obtained if a halide of the azo group-containing carboxylic acid of the formula is used in a molecular ratio of 2: 1
EMI0001.0007
condensed with 1,4-diaminobenzene.
The new pigment is sparingly or insoluble in the usual solvents and, when colored in polyvinyl chloride, gives orange tones with good migration fastness.
As acid halides of the above composition come z. B. the acid bromide and especially the acid chloride into consideration.
These halides can be conveniently prepared by treating the carboxylic acid of the formula given above with acid-halogenating agents such as phosphorus halides or phosphorus oxyhalides. The acid chloride can, for. B. by means of phosphorus pentachloride or particularly advantageously by means of thionyl chloride.
The treatment with the acid-halogenating agents is expediently carried out in an inert organic solvent such as mono- or o-dichlorobenzene, toluene, xylene, benzene or nitrobenzene.
The condensation of the acid halide with the diamine is also advantageously carried out in one of the organic solvents mentioned, it being advisable to carry out this reaction at an elevated temperature in the presence of an acid-binding agent such as ammonia or pyridine. The acid chlorides to be used as starting materials can be deposited from the reaction mixture in which they were prepared as indicated and optionally recrystallized.
If necessary, especially if thionyl chloride was used to prepare the acid halide, deposition can be dispensed with and the condensation can be carried out immediately after the preparation of the acid halide.
The relative amount of the reactants should be chosen so that two molecules of the carboxylic acid halide react with one molecule of the diamine. To carry out the reaction in practice, it is advisable to use a small excess of the first-mentioned component over the theoretically required amount.
Example: 40.1 parts of the dye obtained as usual from diazotized 4-amino-3-nitro-1-benzoic acid and 1- (3'-chlorophenyl) -3-methyl-5-pyrazolone are stirred in 480 parts of nitrobenzene registered. 17 parts of thionyl chloride are added to the mixture and the mixture is heated to between 130 and 150. After about 1 hour, the acid chloride of the dye goes into solution. The mixture is heated to 130 to 150 for about 1 hour and allowed to cool.
The precipitated, crystalline product is filtered off with suction and washed with a little cold benzene and dried in vacuo at 70 to 80 (melting point of the acid chloride 220 to 223). 21 parts of the acid chloride prepared according to the above paragraph are introduced into 550 parts of dry chlorobenzene and 5 parts of pyridine. 2.7 parts of 1,4-diaminobenzene are added to the mixture and the mixture is heated to the boil with stirring.
Cook for about 24 hours; After the condensation has ended, the pigment formed is suction filtered while it is still hot, washed with warm chlorobenzene, then with hot alcohol and dried.
