Calculator. The present invention relates to a calculating machine, for example a machine of the type in which printing elements are actuated in connection with the amounts or numbers written on a keyboard allowing registration on a registration medium placed on the cylinder of a mobile cart.
One of the types of operation commonly obtained by means of such machines requires the entry of amounts on the same line. in different columns, in successive operations of the machine, with or without entry into a totalizer, and this requires that the eliariot be tubulated between each entry, either to the left or to the right, the cylinder having advanced after each entrances.
A method is. Employed when an amount is to be printed in a left column chi entry support without entry in a totalizer, and a corresponding amount on the same row, in an adjacent right column and which is entered in a totalizer, the carriage, shuttling between the positions of the columns in successive operations on the machine, and the cylinder advancing one line as the carriage returns to the position of the right column.
Devices are already known in which the carriage automatically shifts between the two columns while the machine is working and the cylinder is advancing for successive operations. In these known devices, printing is performed while the carriage is stationary and is followed by movement. tabulation and thus, only a part of the operating cycle is useful for the complete fabulation movement to take place which, in view of the mass of the carriage, requires rapid acceleration and, consequently, the existence of 'efficient braking, and a damping mechanism capable of absorbing the inertia of the carriage. at the end of the tab movement.
The machine according to the present invention comprises a carriage. movable with an inscription support, the carriage having two tabulation positions, a main actuating member intended to cooperate with said carriage, and a group of printing elements.
It is characterized by a mechanism capable of performing a reciprocating movement intended to move the carriage, during, a cycle of operation of the machine, from one or the other of the tabulation positions and to an average position. normal in which the portion of the writing medium remains between the two tab positions and is disposed adjacent to the printing elements, a printing operation being performed when the carriage arrives at the appropriate tab position.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the calculating machine forming the subject of the invention: FIG. 1 is a rear view.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the shuttle mechanism.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section taken along line 4--4 of FIG. 2.
Fig. 5 is a section taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 2.
Fig. 6 is a detail view taken in the direction of the arrow .1 of FIG. 3.
The machine shown in the drawing is an adding machine, and only a brief reminder of the known mechanisms that it includes, that is to say a keyboard, an upper totalizer and a lower totalizer, control devices to ensure the selective control of the totalizers responsible for carrying out the additions, subtractions, non-addition, sub-totals and totals, a printing mechanism and. a cart for the registration support that is. normally arranged to be moved by hand to any desired column position following certain types of operations.
The machine further comprises a base 1 (fig. 1) supporting a frame 2 in which a main camshaft 3 (fig. 2-5) capable of reciprocating is journalable in a reciprocating manner. con naked to. each operation.
During an operation, the camshaft 3 moves alternately at an angle of 75 degrees and returns to its normal position and the printing operation takes place approximately towards the end of the operating stroke by means of a printing mechanism, not shown.
A paper carrier 4 is provided with a cylinder 5 which is. arranged to provide linear spacing under the control of a feed lever 6 which, in turn, is returned alternately when spacing is required, the carriage 4 being intended to move along a guide 7.
A spacer 8, held in its position by means of side plates 9, 10 of the carriage 4, carries an adjustable support II at the end of which a connecting rod 12 can pivot at 13. The other end of the connecting rod 12 is capable of pivot at 1.4 on a circular disc 1.5, which is loose at one end of one end, of shaft 16 supported in a flange 17 (see fig. 2-5) which is removably fixed to the frame 2 of machine, by means of bolts 18.
When a diameter of the disc 15 passing through the pivot axis of the connecting rod 12 is set to. vertically, the connecting rod forms an angle with this diameter of between 45 and. 55 degrees. An inscription medium 19 containing the columns in which prints are to be made is in a position on the cylinder 5 of the movable carriage 4 such that printing elements 20 are located midway between the columns (, fig. 1 ).
The disc 15 is capable of rotating 180 degrees in each operating cycle and, during this movement, the connecting rod 12 connected to the disc 15 moves the carriage in a corresponding manner to the position of the left column looking at FIG. 1. and back to the middle position. In the following 180 degree movement, the carriage will be moved according to the position of the right column and. back to the middle position.
The flange 17 is equipped with a pair of guides 21., on its external face, and these serve to fix a slide 22 capable of performing a reciprocating movement, such movement being obtained by means of devices described below. -after.
The slide 22 (fig. 2 and 3) is provided with a pair of vertical grooves 23 and 24, the purpose of the first being to serve as a guide at the end of the shaft 16 when the. slide 22 back and forth.
A believe; -Malte 25 with four teeth is mounted eoaxially on the shaft end 16 between the disc 15 and. the flange 17 and. is intended to cooperate with the teeth of a wheel-stem 26 mounted on a second, shaft end 27 also carried by the flange 17. The pitch of the wheel-stem 26 is. such as to generate a rotational movement of about 90 degrees of the disc 15, the shaft 27 working in the vertical groove 24 when the slide 22 is in a reciprocating movement.
The outer face of the slide 22 is. provided with a pair of half-stroke pawls 28, 29 and the first of these moves the stem by one step during the movement of the slide 22, while the second forces the. gallows to take another step back from the wings. The two pawls are arranged so as to allow one of the two to be bypassed by the teeth of the bracket 26 during the driving time of the other pawl.
A sleeve 30 (Fig. 5) fixed to the main shaft of the machine is provided with a pair of notches 31 at one of its ends, each of them serving to receive one of the pairs of dogs 32 formed at the end. end of a clutch member 33 capable of sliding on the main shaft 3. The inner surface of the clutch member 33 comprises a pair of grooves each intended to cooperate with a spring-loaded locking pin 35 carried by the main shaft and projecting from said inner surface, the clutch thus being able to be locked in the. position engaged or disengaged.
The clutch member 33 is also provided with a fork-shaped lever 36, in contact with a stop 37 of square section mounted on a pin 38 journalled at one end in a block 39 carried by the inner face of the the slide 22 and to the other in a part 40 of the latter folded at right angles to its main plane and placed to enter an opening 41 of the flange 17. The stop 37 is placed in part in the opening 41 and in a groove 42 made in the slide.
So when the. slide 22 is in a reciprocating motion, during the corresponding movement of the main shaft 3, it undergoes a sliding back and forth to force the pawls 28, 29 to rotate the stem wheel 26 and then disc 15.
A lever 43 pivoting on a tenon 44 (fig. 4) projecting on the rear face of the flange 17 is intended to engage and release the clutch and this lever comprises in its lower part a sole 45 (fig. 4 and 5 ) intended to cooperate with a groove 46 (fig. 5) of the outer surface of the clutch member 33.
When the clutch member 33 is engaged with the sleeve 30 and, due to the rigid connection between the lever 36, the stop 37 and the slide 22, the shuttle of the carriage occurs, and it is sufficient for the operator, to allow the machine to be used for direct list operations with spacing between each record, to oscillate the lever 43 around its tenon 44. This has the effect of immediately triggering the clutch and the movement. back and forth of the slide 22 and consequently .the shuttle movement of the cha riot immediately ceases.
The carriage can be moved manually to bring the right column in alignment with the printing unit and it is. in this position that linear spacing takes place, with each operating movement.
The part 40 of the slide carries a block 47 (fig. 4) which serves to hold the lower end of the clutch lever 43 in position and to counteract any resistance that the clutch member 33 might show.
When the clutch member 33 is in the process of performing its reciprocating back and forth movement, the Maltese cross mechanism, through the reciprocating action of the pawls 28, 29, must turn. 90 degrees during the movement of the main shaft 3, then 90 degrees when replacing this shaft, thus causing a movement of 180 degrees of the disc 15 to complete tin shuttle movement of the carriage.
As explained before, it. It is not necessary that the spacing of the cylinder 5 takes place after the printing in the first column, but only after the printing operation in the second column has been performed. In machines of the type described above, the spacing is effected by means of a lever 50 '(fig. 1) which is intended to follow a cam fixed to the main shaft of the machine driven by a movement. alternative.
The lever, during its return movement, actuates a caliper carried by the carriage and which, in turn, actuates a linear spacer pawl cooperating with a ratchet threaded to the cylinder, to ensure space in the latter.
The .support 11 around which the connecting rod 12 is intended to pivot, and which is mounted on the spacer 8, is provided with a nose 48 (fig. 1 and 3) which, when the carriage 4 is in the position of the left column is intended to prevent the lever 50 from following the. cam, so that linear spacing cannot occur as nose 48 moves away from the lever to allow for such spacing, when the carriage. 4- is in the right tab position. The support 11 is provided with a lever 49. Spring-loaded (fi, -. 1, 3 and 6) which locks it in an adjustable way in the position desired on the spacer.
We can see that when the shuttle movement is. disengaged by the movement of the lever 43 and when the carriage is placed in the position of the right column, the nose 48 remains out of contact with the lever 50, so that linear spacing occurs with each operation of the machine .
