La fig. 1 est une vue de face du chariot de cette machine à écrire; La fig. 2 est une vue de bout, dans la direction de la flèche II de la fig. 1, quel ques parties étant en coupe et les différents organes étant représentés dans la position qu'ils occupent avant qu'une carte-patron ait été introduite; La fig. 3 est une vue semblable à celle de la fig. 2, quelques parties étant suppri mées et d'autres parties montrées dans des positions différentes (le celles montrées à la fig. 2; La fig. d est une coupe selon la ligne 4-4 de la fig. 1; La fig. 5 est une coupe selon la ligne à-5 de la fig. 4;
La fig. 6 est une coupe transversale et verticale de quelques parties du dispositif d'espacement de lignes, représentant les par ties dans leurs positions occupées après l'in troduction et le placement d'une carte-patron pour effectuer un espacement maximum après l'opération du levier d'espacement de lignes qui suit la, frappe de la ligne d'impressions à l'encre sur la tête du cadre;
La fig. î est une vue semblable à celle de la fig. 6, représentant les parties dans leurs positions occupées après la première frappe du levier d'espacement et après la formation d'une ligne d'impressions à l'encre à la tête du cadre à cartes-patron où la feuille du pa tron est dans la position pour recevoir la pre mière ligne d'impression et où les parties sont disposées pour effectuer un espacement de ligne minimum après la prochaine opération du levier d'espacement de lignes;
La fig. 8 est une vue semblable à celle de la fig. 6, mais représente les parties dans leurs positions occupées après l'exécution de l'espacement de lignes sur la carte et snccé- dant il la frappe dune ligne à la tête du cadre de la carte et représente le dispositif, actionné alors .i la main, polir produire- un déplacement intermédiaire d'espacement de ligne après la procbaine opération du levier d'espacement;
Typewriter cards-pattern. The object of the invention is a typewriter for pattern cards.
Pattern cards generally used have a fairly rigid marginal frame of cardboard or other material in which the pattern paper is mounted. <B> -A </B> known mechanism used on typewriters to write on Such cards include a positive device for supporting the card in front of a printing cylinder and for moving the card by means of a line spacing device actuated by a lever provided for this purpose.
When typing such pattern cards, one would often like to place ink prints on the head of the marginal frame of the board for classification and also place prints on the thin pattern paper. The first line, on the thin paper, can be separated from the ink print made on the head of the frame by a fairly large gap relative to the gap between subsequent lines of the prints on the template paper.
Therefore, it is desirable for speedy work that the line spacer device advances the card holder with its card a relatively large distance under the effect of the first operation of the spacer lever. and the card then automatically advances smaller amounts as a result of successive individual movements of the row spacing lever.
In a preferred embodiment of the machine, a device can be provided for placing the paper or the card and associated therewith a line spacer device of the type described above, in which the control of the means line spacing to automatically vary the magnitude of the spacing following the initial operation of the spacing lever is performed in a safe and accurate manner. When typing pattern cards, it is often desirable to make the line spacing on the card two or three units after typing the indication at the top of the card frame and,
Usually, it is also desirable to reduce the spacing of. successive lines of printing on the pattern paper at a single row spacing unit. However, in some cases it is advantageous to separate successive lines of pattern prints by more than a single line spacing unit, but by a distance less than that allowed between the ink printing line. at the head of the card and the first line of prints on the boss.
In another embodiment of the machine, it is also possible to provide a line spacing device capable of being pre-arranged to effect maximum spacing by the initial operation of the line spacing lever and sus ceptible. also to then operate automatically, after a first operation of large spacing, a movement of minimum space after the next operation of the lever, or likely to be arranged, by hand, to perform an intermediate spacing after the following movement of the lever.
Finally, it is also possible, in another embodiment of the machine, to provide a new arrangement and a new construction of the typewriter trolley and of the template card holder which allow the parts to be united in a compact whole without limiting the movement line spacing to give to the map.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine which is the subject of the invention.

The fi-. 9 is a plan view of a master map showing the location for an ink printing line at the head of the frame. pattern card and three printing lines on the pattern card itself, the space between the first printing line on the card and the line of ink prints on the frame being maximum and the differences - annuities printing lines on the card being,
spaced from each other by a minimum li-ne spacing, and. fig. 10 is a view similar to that of FIG. 9, but shows two lines of prints on the card spaced from each other by an intermediate spacing.
In the embodiment shown, a mechanism is mounted on a carriage A com carrying a base rail 1 arranged to be moved longitudinally on a stationary raid B mounted on a frame of the typewriter (not shown).
Carriage A has the usual end plates 2-2; in the particular case, they are connected by a transverse bar 3. The shaft 4 of the impression cylinder housed between the end plates carries a rotary impression cylinder 5 provided with buttons 6-6. A character bar C is arranged to be brought into a printing position opposite the impression cylinder, as is already known.
The machine also includes a card holder frame capable of holding a card D in the presence of the printing cylinder 5 so as to allow ink prints to be made on the Da part of the card frame and to print on the Db paper supported by said frame. The card holder frame has two arched vertical guides 7-7 placed at a distance from each other and connected to their bases by a cross member 8 attached at 9-9 to the bar of the carriage 1. The heads of these guides 7-7 are respectively equipped with 10-10 consoles. A card holder generally designated by 11 and having the shape of an inverted U has arched arms 12-12 extended upwards and connected by a cross member 13.
Each arm 12 carries inner 12a and outer 12b bands respectively, joined at their feet and open at their heads to allow the introduction of a card D. The inner bands 12a are provided with racks by grating with teeth 14 of the impression cylinder 5. As this cylinder rotates, teeth 14 will drive the inner bands 12a up or down, depending on the direction of cylinder movement, and result in the spacing of the lines on map D which is carried by the card holder 11. A finger 15, mounted on the cylinder, is provided with stop tabs 16, 17 which can contact a stop pin 18 planted in the extreme right-hand plate 2.
The arrangement is such that the rotary movement of the cylinder is limited and hence also the up and down movement of the card holder 11. When the card holder is in its lowest position, the stop 16 making contact with the stop pin 18 as shown in fig. 3, the head of the Da card frame will be placed on the print line as shown in fig. 1.
When the cylinder is turned clockwise (see fig. 3) until: the parts arrive, in the position shown in fig. 2, where the stop 17 makes contact with the pin 18, the card D is in place to receive the last line of printing on the master card.
An inked ribbon can be brought in front of the print line to allow ink prints to be made at the head of the Da card frame. The born soul mechanism for the ink ribbon is not shown. It can be from any system. To make the characters printed on the pattern card clearly visible, an inked ribbon R covers the printing cylinder behind the pattern sheet so that the ink on the 'R ribbon appears through the marks left by the character when @de The strike.
To place and feed the tape R, a tape roll frame having end discs 19-19 is mounted on the bar S. The tape is fed from a feed roll 23, journaled, to its end discs l '9 = 19, first below, then above and afterwards on the face of the cylinder and back to a roller 24 moved by a control, in one direction (which is not shown) by means of a friction wheel 25 driven by the cylinder 5.
The construction described here is known and does not in itself constitute the present invention. This relates to other parts yet to be described and to combinations of such parts with one another and with those which have already been described. The embodiment shown further includes an improved line spacing device and control means of this device for automatically and variably controlling the spacing between ink printing lines on the card frame and print lines on the card-pattern. A ratchet wheel 26 is connected to cylinder 5 and participates in the rotations of the latter.
An oscillating arm 27, the pivot of which is coaxial with the cylinder, carries a pawl 28 which is pivoted on this arm at 29 and is provided with a nose 30 intended to come into contact with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 26. A spring 31, attached to this pawl at 32 and to the arm 27 at 33, tends to pull the nose 30 on the ratchet wheel. To operate arm 27 and pawl 28 and to turn ratchet wheel 26 and cylinder 5, a lever 34, combined to return the carriage and to space the lines, is pivoted at 35 on a bracket 36 attached at the end. of plate 2 on the left. Lever 34 is pushed clockwise (viewed from above) by a return spring which is not shown, but which is connected to lever 34 and console 36 in a known manner.
The movement of the lever 34, under the effect of the return spring (not shown), is limited by a stop 37 on the console 36. A member 38 is pivoted at 39 on the lever 34 and at 40 on the lever 27. , so that when the lever 34 swings counterclockwise (seen from above) the arm 27 is swung clockwise (see fig. 4, 6, 7 and 8). The movement of the arm 27 for line spacing and for the return of the carriage is limited by the fact that the pawl 28 abuts against a pin 41 attached to the plate 2 on the left.
To ensure step-by-step advancement of the cylinder and of the card holder 11 and to ensure their position relative to the printing line, a pawl comprising a roller 42, carried by an arm 43 -which is pivoted at 44 on the carriage, is held in engagement with the ratchet wheel 26 by a spring 45. The parts of the line spacing device -described are the same as the corresponding parts of the device normally employed in the Royal Standard machine Type writer ".
To control at will the amplitude of the angular movements of the rocker wheel and the cylinder, as well as the number of small line spacing movements of the card holder 11 produced by each operation of the spacing lever 34 of the card holder. lines, a screen 46 is mounted oscillating coaxially with the cylinder, on the shaft 4. This screen is provided with a part 47 forming a cover, which turns part of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 26 and which can move. between certain limits determined by stop tabs 48 and 49 provided on the screen 46. tabs which come into contact with a stop pin 50 fixed on the plate 2 on the left.
The screen may take different positions relative to the ratchet wheel 26 to disengage the pawl 28 during parts of the arm oscillations 7. To automatically change the position of the screen in relation to that which it occupies during the first movement of the line spacing lever and after the card holder 11 has taken its lowest position, the screen 46 is driven by the rour ,, ratchet 26 through the intermediary of a ratchet trigger interposed between the ratchet wheel and screen.
This trigger comprises a spring finger 51 riveted to the screen 46 at 52 and bent at its free end at 53 in the shape of a <B> V. </B> this end 53 coming to engage between the ridges of the teeth of the wheel at. ratchet 26 with radial pressure directed towards the center of the ratchet wheel, this ratchet trigger normally securing the screen and the rotating ratchet wheel, while @ being able to give way in certain cases explained below, to allow a relative rotational movement between ratchet wheel and screen.
While running and assuming that one wishes to separate the first line of printing on pattern from the line of ink printing on the frame by three spacing units and then separate the adjacent lines of printing on one of the other by a single spacer unit, the card D is introduced into the card holder 11 and the finger 15 is oscillated from the position of FIG. 2 counterclockwise to arrive at the position of fig. 3 with the card holder in its lowest position. The head of the frame Da will then be placed on the writing line, while the screen 46, the arm 27 and the pawl 28 will be in the positions shown in solid lines in FIG. 6.
An ink printing line can then be printed on the card frame as shown at 54 in fig. 9. If the lever 34 for the return of the carriage and for the line spacing is oscillated, the arm 27 and the pawl 28 will be oscillated clockwise from their positions shown in lines. full in fig. 6. As soon as the nose 30 leaves part 47 of the screen, it assumes the position indicated at 28a in FIG. 6 in dotted lines. The oscillation of the lever 34 and of the arm 27 continuing, will successively bring the pawl into the positions indicated in dotted lines in FIG. 6 in 28b, 28c and 28d. In its last position, the pawl will be stopped by the stop pin 41.
During this continuous movement, the pawl will drive the ratchet <B> 26 </B> and the frame 11 of the card holder over three space units and place the boss card in position to receive the first row 55 d print three lines lower than line 54 of ink prints. Movement of the ratchet wheel 26 will drive the screen 46 through the ratchet trigger 51 and place the screen in a new position (see Fig. 7). During the next operation of lever 34 and arm 27, pawl nose 30 will slide without engagement on portion 47 of the screen during the first part of its oscillation and then descend to position 2'8c shown in fig. 7 in dotted lines.
The oscillation of the lever 34 and the arm 27 continuing, will bring the pawl in its position 28d where it will be stopped by contact with the stop pin 41. Thus the active movement of the pawl to drive the wheel to. ratchet 26 is limited to a single row spacing unit for transporting the card frame 11 upward for spacing the next or second row 55 of the prints on the pattern.
During this last movement of the ratchet wheel 26, the screen remains stationary because its stopper 419 is in contact with the stop pin 50 and the ratchet wheel can continue to rotate relative to the latch. screen that remains stationary, as the 5.1 ratchet trigger jumps over the teeth of the ratchet wheel. The card holder 11 will be moved upwards in the same way by successive operations of the spacing lever 34 on individual spacing units. The number of movements of the card holder 11 and therefore the number of lines which can be printed on the pattern sheet is ultimately limited by the contact of the stopper nose 17 with the stopper pin 18.
If, however, the number of lines has been completed before the contact of the nose 17 with the pin 18, the card holder can be moved to its upper position, in order to remove the card D, by the finger 15 oscillating in the direction of the needles d 'a watch (seen in fig. 3).
Sometimes the first pattern printing line needs to be spaced a maximum of line spacing, such as three units, below the ink printing line at the head of the printer. frame and that subsequent lines of pattern printing be spaced from each other by an intermediate spacing of two units instead of one.
The map prepared in this way is shown in fig. 10, where the upper pattern print line 56 is spaced three spacers below the ink print line 54, while the lower pattern print line 56 is spaced two apart. spacing units below top line 56.
To prepare a card the prints of which are arranged as shown in fig. 10, a handle 57 of the screen 46 can move the latter relative to the ratchet wheel to position the screen 46 so as to communicate to the card holder 11 a movement corresponding exactly to two units of the screen. pacement effected by a row spacing lever 34 operation. In fig. 7, the screen 46 is shown in a position such that the next actuation of the lever produces a movement corresponding to a single spacing unit.
In order to provide for a movement of the card holder 11 corresponding to two spacing units, on the next actuation of the lever 34, the screen 46 must be brought back to the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 8; this movement can be performed with the handle 57 controlled by hand. The anti-clockwise oscillation of the screen required to position the device for movement corresponding to two spacing units is such that the end 53 of the trigger slides over the trigger teeth. the ratchet wheel 26.
To stop or verify the correct position of the screen, the operator can refer to the position of a cursor 58 forming part of the pawl 28 and to digits 59 engraved on part 47 of the screen. When lever 34 and arm 27 oscillate, the pawl drops and engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel at the position marked in dotted lines at 28b in FIG. 8. By a subsequent oscillation of the arm 27, the pawl will advance into two new positions marked 28c and 28d in FIG. 8; therefore, the card holder 11 will move upward a distance of two row spacing units.
The ratchet trigger 51 interposed between the ratchet wheel and the screen fulfills two functions, firstly: to produce the oscillation of the screen 46 in both directions by dragging this screen by the ratchet wheel 26 and between the two limits permitted by the stop tabs 48 and 49 which abut against the pin 50 and, secondly, to allow said ratchet wheel to rotate without driving the screen when the latter is stopped by one of its cleats, or on the screen to turn relative to the ratchet wheel, between the limits allowed by the cleats, under the action of the control handle 57.
The value of the relative angular displacement between the ratchet wheel and the screen in each of the positions is an integer multiple of the angular movement of the ratchet wheel 26 corresponding to a complete minimum spacing movement of the card holder 11.
Thus the screen 46 can be safely placed to prepare the device to automatically perform an intermediate line spacing of a total of two space units.
In view of the compactness of the construction of the carriage and of the parts carried by it in the said Royal Typewriter, the cylinder 5 is disposed only at a small distance above the lower rail 1 of the carriage A and, to allow the door -card 11 to bring the card D into a sufficiently basic position to be able to strike along the head of the frame Da of the card, the rail 1 is provided with a mortise 60 to receive the bottom of the card holder 11 and of map D, when these organs are in their lowest positions as shown in fig. 3.
