Printer telegraph receiver. The present invention relates to a page printer telegraph receiver.
It is frequently desirable that each printed telegraph message be printed on a sheet of paper of the same size for all messages, especially in cases where such messages are received on printed forms and a large number of such forms, linked together, forms a continual roll. It is of course also desirable that a revised message should start at the same place on all forms.
The object of this invention is to provide in a printing telegraph receiver means for rotating the piipier roll until the sheet of paper is in a predetermined position.
The printing telegraph receiver on a pavement according to the present invention is characterized by a paper holder roll on which the printing is done, means which respond to a code signal received to print a unified succession of interline movements to said holder roller. paper, a feeler member and means responding to said feeler member when it enters a perforation in the paper carried by the roll, to stop the movement of said paper holder roll.
The invention will be better understood with the aid of the following description of an embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the fi-. 1 shows a plan view of the mechanism intended to effect interline movements as well as progression of the forms, FIG. 2 is an elevational view of the part of the mechanism of fig.1 which is intended to effect interline movements, some parts being removed for the best representation of details, fig. 3 a section along the line A-A of FIG. 1 showing the mechanism in rest position,
and fig. 4 and 5 similar sections showing part of the mechanism in different working positions.
The operation of the mechanism shown in the drawing will be better understood in connection with a general description of the translation mechanism which forms the subject of Swiss patent No. 270401.
The successive elements of code of a received signal effect the placement of five storage pieces (when a code of five units is admitted), under the control of a receiving electromagnet and a cam selector shaft. triggered by the operation of this electromagnet upon receipt of the start element of a signal.
During its rotation, the selector shaft at. cams release the camshaft from the translator device so that it can rotate and one of the cams on this translator shaft moves the five storage parts that have. been placed, as indicated above, to effect the displacement of five vertical rods; each rod is displaced longitudinally in one or the other of two directions, in accordance with the character of the code element (marking or space). The vertical rods are articulated with corresponding code discs and with function selector parts.
Code discs are used to select a character to print. Their position is indicated at 1 in fig. 2 to show the position occupied by the mechanism in relation to the rest of the machine. A function selector part 2 is. shown in fig. 2, 3, 4 and 5.
When the function selector part has been placed in accordance with a signal. representing -a function which must be performed, a function bar, as indicated under 4 or 6, can move under the influence of a res sort 7 (see fig. 2, 3, 4 and <B> 5) . </B>
Some of the function bars can only move to the selected position when the signals representing those functions have been preceded by a digit change signal. Other bars can only move to the selected position when the signals representing their functions have been preceded by an auxiliary position change signal.
When an interline signal is received, the function bar 4 moves, under the action of the spring 7, to the selected position shown in FIG. 2.
When an auxiliary position change signal is received. Immediately followed by a form progress signal, the result is that two bars, i.e. the line bar 4 and the form progress bar 6, move into the selected position (shown to the right of figs. 3, 4 and 5), the latter being moved by a spring similar to spring 7, but which is not shown. The arrangement for effecting these movements of the selector bars emerges more clearly from the description of the translator mechanism in the cited patent. The particular mechanism intended to move a function bar in the selected position does not form the object of the present invention.
The exemplary embodiment described relates to a printing telegraph receiver in which the paper holder roll 9 which serves as a printing cylinder (fig. 3, 4 and 5) and in which the paper 10 which will receive the printing. is rolled up, is assembled to be able to turn in a fixed part of the frame of the machine. The printing carriage which carries the printing device moves parallel to the roller to print the successive characters in a straight line. For each line spacing operation, the roller must be rotated by a predetermined angle.
In the example of execution shown, the interline mechanism does not act directly. on the roller 9, but on a toothed wheel 11 (fig. 1, 4 and 5) which meshes with a floating toothed wheel (not shown) which at its. round lathe with a toothed wheel (not shown) attached to the roller 9. The toothed wheel 11 is mounted on the shaft 12 to which is also attached a ratchet wheel 13. Two plates 15 and 16 are also threaded onto the shaft 12, but little wind turn freely around it. There is shown in FIG. 2 the plate 16 partially removed. A pawl 17 is pivoted on a peg 18 attached to. the plate 15 and biased by a spring 19 tending to engage on the ratchet wheel 13.
The pawl 17 is held out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 13 by a lever '_'3 eliminating interline operations, pivoted on a shaft 24 and acting on a pin 25 fixed to the pawl 17. The frame 28 also pivots around the axis 24 and carries a pusher 29 and a pusher 31 (which will be discussed later), which engages against the lever 23 and the hand holds in the positions shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 against the action of the spring 32. The pusher 30 is not shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, because he would have hidden the. view of pusher 31.
An arm 34 of the frame 8 is curved as indicated by the fiy. 1 and 2 and one end of the return rod 35 is articulated on a pin 36 carried by the curved part 37 of the arm 34. The other end of the return rod 35 is articulated on a pin 38 carried by plate 16. Plate 16 is. articulated by a rod 39 with a lever 40 fixed on the shaft 41 resting in net cushions (not shown) which form part of the frame of the machine. Another lever 42 is fixed to the shaft 41 and is articulated. on the other hand, by a return rod 43 to a lever 44 fixed to a sleeve 45 (FIG. 1) rotating on a lug 46 fixed to the frame. A lever 47 is fixed to the sleeve 45 and carries a roller 48 which follows the cam 50 (FIG. 3).
A spring 49 (fig. 2) applies the roller 48 to the cam 50.
The shaft 41 also supports a plate 51 on which pivots, at 52, a part 53. The part 53 carries a clamping screw 54 whose position can be adjusted by moving it in a slot 55 of the plate 51. The part 53 is, on the other hand, articulated with the plate 15 by means of a return rod 56. The part 53 is shown in FIG. 2 in a certain position and in fig. 3 and 5 in another position of the screw 54. It will be noted that any movement. of the plate 51 results in a rotational movement of the plate 15 which is twice as large with the part 53 in the position of FIG. 2 that when the part 53 is in the position of FIGS. 3 and 5.
By locking the screw 54 in one or the other of its extreme positions, it is therefore possible to operate the interline mechanism so that the paper advances by a single line or else by two lines per operation.
The mechanism actuated by the cam 50 v including the plates 15 and 16 will hereinafter be referred to as a reciprocating mechanism.
The operation of the mechanism described above will be explained first for the case where no interline operation occurs. and then for the case where the paper is advancing in the forward direction.
During the rotation of the translator camshaft mentioned above, the camshaft functions will be released to make a full revolution. Cam 50 is one of the cams on this function camshaft and rotates one full turn each time a signal is received. The rotation of the cam 50 is transmitted by the articulated return rods referred to above. Plate 15 rotates counterclockwise around axis 12, while plate 16 rotates around the same shaft clockwise. The rotation of the plate 16 drives, by the rod of the link 35, that of the frame 28, and the pusher 29 is withdrawn from the lever 23 eliminating interline operations.
However, this lever tends to follow the pusher under the action of the spring 32. If, however, the received signal did not simultaneously trigger the selection of the function bar 4, the projection 57 of the lever 4 is soon engaged by the end of the lever 23 and the movement of the latter can only be of very small amplitude. Thus this lever prevents the pawl 17 from coming into contact with the ratchet wheel 13. The plates 15 and 16 are in this way moved without having any effect on the interline mechanism.
In the following, the effect of receiving a leading signal is described. After receipt of such a signal, the interline function bar 4 is moved to the right (fig. 3) to the position shown in figs. 2, 4 and 5. The projection 57 of this bar is therefore located outside the path of movement of the suppressor lever 23, as shown in these figures. When the plates 15 and 16 have been turned by a very small angle, and when the frame 28 has been lifted, the lever 23 follows it under the action of the spring 32 and the pawl 17 is turned by its spring 19 and s' engages on the ratchet wheel 13.
When the plate 15 which carries the pawl 17 continues to rotate, the ratchet wheel 13 will therefore also rotate and, with it, the toothed wheel. '! 1. Uri shortly before the top of the cam 50 comes into contact with the roller 48, an arm 59 (fig. 3 and 5), carried by the shaft 41, comes into contact with a pin 60 located at the end of a lever 61 pivoted at 62.
The pressure exerted by the arm 59 on the pin 60 forces the lever 61 to rotate against the action of the antagonist spring 63 and the latch 64 which terminates the lever 61 at its other end engages between the teeth of the toothed wheel 11, which is thus unable to perform a greater rotation than that which is thus predetermined.
The cam 50 continues its rotation after having presented its top to the roller 48, but, from this moment, the plates 15 and 16 rotate in the opposite direction. The stopper 64 does not remain in engagement with the toothed wheel 11, but this wheel remains blocked by a ga let 65 which is pressed against it by a spring 66. During the return movement of the frame 28, the pusher 29 ( Fig. 2) returns the suppressor lever 23 to its initial rest position.
In the following, the arrangement for the progression of forms is described. If the operator at the transmitting station having a mechanism similar to that shown in the des sin wishes to synchronize the position of the paper at the receiver with that of her own receiver, to ensure that the following message begins to be printed on the first line of one of the forms, it first places the paper in its own receiver in the correct position. Then, it activates the auxiliary key for changing position and then the key which causes the sending of the form progress signal.
The auxiliary position change signal places the function selector pieces so that an auxiliary so called position change bar is moved into the selected position and a fin similar to the other selector pieces is placed in a position such that some function bars which were not previously selectable can be selected. One of these bars is the Forms 6 progress bar (fig. 3, 4 and 5). When the forms progress signal thus follows the auxiliary position change signal, the forms progress bar 6 is moved to the right (Fig. 3).
It should be noted that the bar 6 is shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 a little too far to the left of the correct position it should occupy in order to be able to. clearly distinguished from the interline bar 4. Examples are described in the patent N 270401 mentioned above, in which certain function bars can be selected when the additional fin is either in its rest position, either in its working position.
In the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, it has been ensured that the interline bar 4 will be selected when the interline signal is received and due to the additional fin is in the rest position and it will be also selected when the form progress signal is received and said fin is in the working position. This is because the forms progress signal is identical to the line spacing signal, but it takes on the special meaning of the forms progress signal when it immediately follows the auxiliary position change signal. It emerges that, in this case, the two function bars 4 and 6 of FIG. 4 are both moved to the. right.
A projection 67 of the bar 6 normally rests against a projection of an interposed part 68, which pivots at 69 and is pulled to the right by a spring 70 (Figs. 3, 4 and 5). When the function bar 6 moves to the right, the part 68, pulled by the spring 70, tends to follow this movement, but it is soon stopped by a tooth 71 of a latch 72.
The latch 72 pivots about the axis 24 and. is, pulled up by a spring 73, so that it bitt normally against the. part 74 of the end of lever 75, that is, the form advancement lever. This lever 7: 5 also pivots around the axis 24 and is pulled upwards by a spring which tends to make it turn clockwise. It is maintained in the position shown in FIG. 3 by the pusher 31 of the frame 28 which pusher rests on a flat part of the upper part of the lever 7.5.
When the frame 28 begins to lift worm under the action of the cam 50, the lever 75 will therefore also begin to follow the same movement, but it will be stopped after a short trip in two different ways. If the bar 6 has not been moved to the right, the lever 75 will be stopped by the stop of its end 74 on the projection I7 of the bar (i and, in this case, the lever 75 cannot follow the movement. of frame 28.
If, however, bar 6 has been moved to the right and occupies the position shown on the figures. 4 and 5, the lever 75 will nevertheless still be prevented from following the movement of the frame 28, when the pusher 37 has moved away from the lever. The form progression lever 75 is bifurcated at one of its ends and one of the arms 78 of this bifurcation abuts against a latch. 79, rotated in 80, and pulled by a spring <B> 81 </B> in position to stop the vier 75.
As the leading bar 4 is moved to the right, the projection 57 of this bar does not oppose the movement. of the suppressor lever 23 which follows the frame 28 in its clockwise movement. The pawl 17 therefore engages in the ratchet wheel 13 and imparts to the paper roll 9 a line spacing rotation. A little before the plate 15 has completed its anti-clockwise rotation movement, a pin 82 carried by this plate strikes the latch 79 and forces it to turn against the action of the res sort 81, which releases it from the arm 78 of the lever 75. The lever 75 is now released and will rotate clockwise.
The second arm 83 of the bifurcation of this lever is engaged on a pin 84 which is part of the feeler 85 and the feeler turns around its pivot to come into contact with the paper 10 on the paper holder roll 9.
The paper 10 is provided with perforations which recur from distance to distance and the roller 9 is hollowed out with a circular groove in the plane of the perforations, so that the feeler member 85, entering a perforation, falls down to bottom of the groove. The location of the perforations on the paper web is such that at this time the first line of a form is in a suitable position for printing.
When the web of paper is itself driven by the intermediary of perforations, the additional perforations to be provided for the advancement of the forms can be made by simply lengthening, parallel to the axis of the roll 9, some of the perforations. already used for paper feed.
As long as the feeler 85 has not encountered a perforation, it comes into contact with the paper 10 which stops it, and which prevents the form advancing lever 75 from moving over the entire extension which would be allowed by the device. the pusher 31 of the frame 28.
If, as indicated above, the lever 75 does not move. not over the entire extension possible, the frame 28 moves the lever 75 during its return movement and the latch 71 remains in the way of the member 68.
It is assumed that the cam 50 continues to rotate. This can be done in several different ways.
a) The operator of the transmitting station activates the form progress key several times, and the forms progress signal is thus received several times in succession. Since the position of the function selector parts does not change when the same signal is repeated, the function bars 4 and 6 remain in the working position, while the cam 50 performs a new rotation with each signal received.
b) At the sending station, the actuation of the form progress key can trigger, by a special mechanism, the automatic sending of several successive form progress signals. At the receiving station, things are as in case a).
c) At the transmitting station, the forms progress signal will only be sent once, but at the receiving station, the reception of the signal causes the uninterrupted rotation of the cam 50 until the stop signal is reached. is given by the receiver.
Whatever one of the three cases in which it is placed, during each rotation of the cam 50, the paper holder roll 9 will advance by one line and the feeler 85 will immediately be brought into contact with the paper. When the fear pad 85 finds a perforation in the paper, the forms advancement lever 75 can give its movement the maximum extension, which is then limited by the pusher 31 of the frame 28, and the latch 72 is driven with it. lever 75. The latch 72 is then driven far enough to release the part 68, which will move slightly to the right until the. projection 86 carried by this part abuts against projection 87 located at the lower part of lever 23.
The fi-. 4 shows the position of the mechanism at. this moment.
Frame 28, in its movement. turn, turn lever 75 and lever 23, both counterclockwise. The feeler 85 withdraws from the perforation of the paper 10 and the lever 23 withdraws the pawl 17 from its engagement. with the roehets wheel 13. The right end of the lever 23 is carried upwards and the projection 87 emerges from the projection 86 of the. part 68, which can then move further to the right by passing below the projection 87 of the lever 23.
Cam 50 can still rotate one or even more times, but no line spacing will occur during these rotations, although function bars 6 and 4 are both still in the working position, because projection 86 of the part 68 remains below the projection 87 of the lever 23 and now prevents this lever from following the movement of the frame 28. The pawl 17 therefore does not descend into engagement with the ratchet wheel 13 and there is no longer any line spacing for paper 10.
Fig. 5 shows the position taken by the mechanism at the moment when, during one of the subsequent rotations of the cam 50, the feeler 85 has entered a perforation of the paper 10, as it should, in fact, since the paper n 'advance more. The tooth 71 of the latch 72 is then behind the part 68 and the latch 72 can follow the movements of the lever 75 during each oscillation.
When the transmitting station emits another signal, the function bar 6 will return to the rest position, its projection 67 will push the part 68 to the left and the tooth 71 of the latch 72 will return to its position shown in fig. 3.
