u<I>n</I> Alors, le ruban sera placé de façon à présen ter sa zone centrale I le long de la ligne d'im pression comme indiqué en fig. 13.
Desktop machine. The present invention relates to an office machine, for example a typewriter, a calculating machine, an accounting machine, etc., provided with mechanisms for performing line spacing movements, means for supplying it. ment of a tape and for aligning a length of this tape along a printing line, and means for advancing the tape along said printing line.
In the machine according to the invention, it is possible with advantage to place and advance ribbons or bands of different types, but above all it is possible to place and advance very narrow strips of carbon paper or similar bands or ribbons. The embodiment which will be shown and described uses a hectographic tape which produces negative impressions on matrix ribbons which are then used to make positive copies.
Office machines heretofore commercially employed to perform such tasks have commonly been equipped to feed hectographic tape to a feed roll containing three hundred feet of tape. It was possible to guide the tape along the print line, so that type prints were made on an area with only half of the tape and: on one side only of the horizontal center line - of the tape .
After advancing the entire length of the tape along the print line, a second area of blank tape remained on the other side of the center line of the tape. By then turning the ribbon: upside down, or by moving the ribbon guides vertically and passing the ribbon again before the printing point, it was possible to also use the second zone of the ribbon, so that the total usable length of the ru ban was six hundred feet.
However, as a result of the difficulty of not being able to maintain the position of the ribbon exactly at the same level along the print line, it has not heretofore been possible to separate and remove. separately using more than two areas of a tape of ordinary commercial width.
The office machine according to the invention is characterized in that means are provided for applying tension to the tape while this tape is not supplied and after a row spacing operation. By thus limiting the prints of characters in an exactly defined area, it is possible to bring together areas or lines of printing in neighboring areas without risking overlapping of the prints of types. This fact makes it possible to successively make prints of types on three separate areas in a tape of ordinary width.
Therefore, the use of zones of a total length of nine hundred feet is possible in a tape of the same size as the tapes which could only be used up to here six hundred feet.
In a particular embodiment, it is also possible to bring and maintain the tape in an exact position after the operation of the adjustment of the spacing between the lines, so that any lateral displacement of the tape from this spacing be corrected before starting to print a new line.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, a preferred embodiment of the office machine according to the invention, consisting of a typewriter.

The office machine according to the invention can be a typewriter of different constructions. A preferred embodiment has been shown and described, the Royal Standard Typewriter, having a main frame A and a carriage B mounted on the frame, for the spacing of the letters and for the backward stroke, by a rail 1 of the frame. and a rail 2 of the carriage (fig. 3). A drum C is mounted on the carriage between end plates 3 and 3 and can be turned to produce the spacing of the lines, by means of a combined lever 4 called the lever for spacing the lines and strokes behind the carriage.
A spring barrel 5 (fig. 1 and 9), journaled in the frame, is attached to the carriage by a traction band 6 causing the carriage to advance in the direction of the spacing of the letters. This movement is controlled by an escapement device which comprises an escapement wheel 7 mounted on an escapement frame 8 (fig. 3) and rotating with a pinion 9 which meshes with a rack 10. This is carried by a handle formed of arms 11, 11 'pivot in 12 and 12' on the end plates of the cart. Means are provided for putting the exhaust device out of service.
This mechanism comprises disengagement levers 13, 13 '(Fig. 3 and 9) arranged in a known manner and pivoted at 14, 14' on the end plates 3 and 3 '. The release levers are provided with guide slots 15, 15 'in which are engaged the pins 16, 16' and these levers 13, 13 'are provided with crampons 17, 17' which can engage under the arms 11, 11 'of the handle to lift the rack when one or the other of the levers 13, 13' is lowered. The end plates 3 and 3 'of the carriage still bear stops 18, 18' (fig. 4) eccentric for the shackle which limit the lowering of the rack 10, in its engagement with the pinion 9.
The typewriter shown also has a tabulator device of a known type. This device comprises a support 19 (fig. 3 and 17) attached to the main frame A, a central stop finger 20 pivoted at 21 on the support 19 and a tabulator stop finger 22 pivoted at 23 on this support 19 The two stop fingers 20 and 22 can be moved together by means of an adjustable fish plate 24 articulated at 25 on the central stop lever and at 26 on the tabulator finger 22. A stop frame of columns 27 is supported between the plates 3, 3 'and serves to mount a number of column stops 28 of which only one is shown.
The .means for eliminating the escapement mechanism and for operating the central stop lever 20 and the tabu lator finger 22 comprise a button bar 29 articulated on the main frame at 30 and provided with an arm 31 having a hook 3.2 which can engage a rocker lever 33 articulated also on the main frame at 30.
A connecting rod 34 connects the lever 33 and the lower end of an extension 35 of the central stop lever 20, so that if the button bar 29 is actuated, the central stop lever 20 will swing in the direction clockwise movement and the tabulator finger 22 in the opposite direction, seen in FIGS. 3 and 17, thereby moving the upper end <B> of the </B> central stop lever 20 of the ordinary margin stop track (which is not shown) and bringing the tab finger 22 in the way of one of the column stops 28 previously adjusted in a position of limitation of the columns.
Simultaneously with such a movement of the central stop lever, the lower end of this lever will come into contact with a lever 36 pivoted at 37 on the exhaust frame 8 and will cause this lever to swing to bring an arm 38 of the lever 36 in contact with a bar 39 of the handle which lifts the mesh cage and releases the pinion 9 from the exhaust. According to fig. 11, the drum C, mounted on a shaft 40, is arranged in the usual manner with respect to rollers 41, 41, with a handle 42 and a handle 43. A character carrier 44 is shown in its printing position.
The row spacing lever 4 performs the combined functions of transferring the row spacing movement to the drum and returning the carriage to its row start position and includes a handle 45 and a short arm 46 articulated. at 47 (fig. 4) on one end of a connecting rod 48, the other end of which is articulated at 49 (fig. 4) on an arm 50 (fig. 4) which carries a pawl 51 of a ratchet wheel 52 attacked by the drum.
If the lever 4 sorrel in the direction of clockwise movement, the pawl 51, according to fig. 1 and 4, will be carried towards the rear of the machine, will attack the ratchet wheel 52 and produce the space movement of the lines of the drum C. During the return of the lever 4, the pawl 51 will slide over the teeth of the ratchet wheel. Flanged pouches 53, 53 '(fig. 1) are mounted in the usual way on the main frame to advance an ordinary ink ribbon 54 by a ribbon vibrator 55, towards the point of printing and in front of a matrix tape 56 (fig. 1 and 11). The parts mentioned above can be constructed and arranged in a known manner and they are nothing new compared to certain machines currently in use.
The machine shown has a positive device for placing, advancing and tensioning a hectographic or other tape. This device comprises means generally designated by D to ensure a supply of tape 57, means for placing and stretching the tape, designated by E and shown on the right of the carriage B, means for placing, maintaining and advancing the tape , designated by F and represented on the. left of the cha riot, and the means for winding the ribbon, designated by G and represented on the. left of frame A.
By the operations of the device for placing, advancing and applying a tension, the tape is withdrawn from a supply roll provided with means for resisting, elastically, unwinding of the tape, and is. directed through the tension placing and applying means E and from there the tape extends along the impression line of the drum and through the means. F. The tape 57 then extends from the means F to the means G which is capable of lifting the tape fed along and beyond the print line of the drum during the movement of the carriage in the direction of space. ment of letters.
When the carriage has reached the end of the printed line, the line spacing lever 4 is operated in the usual manner to effect the line spacing of the drum and the return of the carriage. By means explained below, this movement of the lever 4 disengages the holding means F and the means E from the operative engagement with the tape and. thereby allows the cart to be returned to its. position corresponding to the beginning of the lines, without moving the ribbon with the carriage.
When the line spacing a. been completed and the carriage returned, the tension means E will re-engage the tape and produce a rightward traction while the tape is retained by the lifting means G which. at this moment are. inactive.
When the carriage has been brought into its starting position of a printing line and the line spacing lever 4 has been released, the means F will re-engage. the tape 57 and the placing and tensioning means E will advance a small distance to the right to produce tension and slightly extend the length of the tape between means E and F. While tightening the tape strongly at this time, it is brought back into alignment and prevents any lateral deviation which may have occurred during the line spacing operation.
It is also ensured that during the printing of the neighboring line, the impressions are made only in a specific narrow area.
As regards more particularly the means D for supplying the tape, a support 58, mounted on the main frame A, is provided with a spindle 59 on which a supply reel 60 can turn under the effect of friction d 'a spring washer 61 (fig. 3) set by a nut 62. A leaf spring 63, pivoted at 64 on the support 58, is kept in frictional contact with the tape spool 57 by a coil spring 65.
To allow the ribbon, after a single use, to be reversed to serve again for a new printing area, the spool 60 has upper and lower flanges 66, 67 and a removable core 68 which can be forced out. to rotate with the lower flange 66 by means of a peg 69 integral with the lower flange and engaged in the bore 69a of the core. The tape 57 passes from the reel 60 around a guide roller 70 provided with flanges and mounted at the end of an arm 71 pivoted at 72 on the support 58. From this roll 70, the tape passes through the means E placement and tension and from there along the print line of the drum.
The means E are mounted on a support 73 attached at 74 (fig. 4) to the carriage B and comprise a plate 75 capable of sliding vertically on bolts 76, 77 fixed in the support 73. This plate has an upper extension 78. (Figs. 5 and 13), capable of sliding on bolt 76, and a spring loaded finger 79, carried by plate 75, can selectively engage with grooves 80, 81 of the bolt to hold plate 75 in a secure position. adjusted position. The extension. 78 has a horizontal projection 82 serving as a finger rest to facilitate adjustment of the plate 75.
The movement of the plate serves to place the ribbon 57 in a position such that it is guided, so as to present the various chosen areas of the ribbon for printing.
A support 83 is mounted on the plate 75 so as to be able to move in the direction of the moving carriage. At one of its ends, the support 83 has a slot 84 (fig. 12) in which is engaged a bolt 85 with a base and fixed in the plate 75 and, at the other end, a slot 86 for receiving. a bolt 87 carried by this plate 75 which can move vertically. A spring 88, interposed between a lug 89 of the plate 83 and an lug 90 of the plate 75, pulls the plate 83 to the right, that is to say in the direction opposite to the direction of the spacing movement of the legs. letters and ribbon progress.
A flanged guide roller 91, journalled on a spindle 92 carried by the vertically movable plate 75, guides the tape 57 towards the printing line and directs it between two rollers 93, 94 which pass the tape along. the printing line. Roller 93 is journaled on a spindle 95 carried by plate 83 which can move horizontally and roll 94 is journaled on a spindle 96 carried by an angled lever 97 pivoted at 98 on plate 83.
An arm 97a, of the elbow lever 97 is connected, by means described below, to the mechanism for disabling the action of the exhaust, so that the lever 97 will oscillate and separate the two rollers 93 and 94 when the rack is lifted. Normally the clamping roll 94 is hand held pressed against the roll 93 by a res out 99 interposed between the arm 97a of the lever 97 and the plate 83 which moves horizontally.
If the plate 83 and the rollers 93, 94 carried by this plate are moved to the right and at the end of the return movement of the carriage to apply tension to the tape, the rollers will be kept in a clamped state by the spring 99 and the rotation of the rollers will be resiliently retained by the springs 100 and 101 (Figs. 3 and 19) which are interposed between the heads of the pins 95, 96 and the respective rollers 93, 94.
To separate the rollers 93, 94 and put them in position prior to their final tightening and tensioning operation, means are provided for moving the plate 83 to the left while simultaneously removing the roll 94 from the roll 93 and bringing back the roller 94 clans its clamping position. In the machine shown, a cam lever 102 is pivoted at 103 on the plate 75 and is hand held in the normal position against a stopper 104 by a spring 105 interposed between the bolt 8 7 and a lug 106 of the lever. cam.
This lever has a cam surface 107 which is in the path of the leftward movement of a projection 108 on the crank lever 97. FIG. 4 shows the position of the parts before the left movement of the plate 83. When the plate 83 moves to the left, the projection 108 of the lever 97 will mount on the. cam surface 107 and will move roller 94 away from roller 93. If the movement of plate 83 continues, protrusion 108 will protrude beyond cam surface 107 and spring 99, by oscillating elbow lever 97, will bring protrusion 108 behind. the cam surface 107 and the parts will be in the position of FIG. 12 with the roller 94 gripping the roller 93. If, then, the plate 83 moves, to the right to hold the tape tight, the spring 105 will give way and allow.
the swing of the cam lever 102 and the continuous movement of the projection 108 without moving the roller 94 away from the roller 93. It is understood that the horizontal movement of the plate 83 is effected in connection with the line spacing operation and placing the carriage in its starting position for the lines. The mechanism for effecting this relationship will be described below.
The means F for placing the ribbon. advancement and retention comprise two non-reversible rollers 109, 110. capable of gripping the ribbon 57 stretched to the left beyond the print line. The roller 109 can rotate on a fixed spindle 111 carried by a plate 112 which is located on an extension 113 of the end plate 3 of the carriage. The roller 109 is provided with a ratchet wheel 114 which cooperates with a pawl 115 carried by a spring so as to allow the rotation of the roller in the direction of the arrow and (see fig. 6) but to prevent the rotation in the direction of the arrow. contrary. The roller 110 is journaled on a spindle 117 carried by a support 118 fixed on the lever 4 for spacing the lines.
The roller 110 is provided with a ratchet wheel 119 which can cooperate with a pawl 120 controlled by a spring 121, so that the roller can rotate in the direction indicated by the arrow t in FIG. 6, but is prevented from rotating in the opposite direction. The line spacing lever 4 and with it the support 118 are controlled by a spring 122 mounted between this support and a stud 123 to keep the roller 110) tight against the roller 109.
When a line is to be printed and the carriage moves in the direction of letter spacing, the rollers 109, 110 will grip the tape 57 and, as these rollers cannot rotate in a direction opposite to that indicated by the arrows. a, a ', the rollers will pull the tape in the direc tion of arrow b, so that new tape passes to and past the point of impression and at exactly the same speed as the drum and die tape 56 When the carriage is to be returned to the on position, the row spacing lever sorrel to separate roll 110 from roll 109 and allows the carriage to return without rolls 109, 11U pulling the tape in motion. return of the carriage.
To move the tape transversely and to present the determined areas of the tape at the point of impression, a moving device called tape ordinarily designated by 124 is mounted on the left of the rollers 109, 110. This device comprises a plate 125 (fig 7 and 8) provided with a guide grid 126 which can move on a flat rail 127 fixed on the underside of the plate 112.
Plate 125 is provided with a U-shaped guide 128 of the tape 57 which is guided between the two arms of this U-shaped guide (see fig. <B> 7). </B> To maintain the tape in its adjusted position, a stop 129. attached to the plate 112 by rivets <B> 130, </B> is provided and. cooperates with notches <B> 131, </B> 132 made in the plate <B> 125. </B> A key 134, provided on the plate 125 # facilitates the movement of the guide in <B> U. < / B> The distance of this guide upwards is limited by the guide claw 126 which touches the plate 11? and; the gap: downwards is limited by a stopper 135 which stops this guide claw 126.
The mechanism for actuating the means <I> F and </I> T to operate the spacing of the lines and the return of the carriage in their mutual relations comprises a connecting rod 136 articulated at one of its ends, at 137, on a arm 138 which is on the support 118 carried by the line spacing lever 4. The rear end of the connecting rod 136 has a slot 139 (fig. 18) in which is engaged a bolt 140 fixed to an arm 141 which is mounted on a shaft 142 carried by the rear ends of the end plates 3, 3 'of the. cart. The bolt 140 and the slot 139 allow a loss of travel between the lever and the shaft 142.
The right end of this shaft (fig. 4) is provided with an arm 143 (fig. 3) which is articulated at 144 on the rear end of a connecting rod 145, the front end of which is articulated at 146 on an elbow lever 147 which is hinged at 148 to the support 73. The elbow lever 147 has an arm 149 which carries a long bolt 150 engaged in a slot 151 in the plate 83 which can move horizontally. The length of the bolt 150 is sufficient to ensure the permanent engagement of the bolt in this slot 151, even when the plate 75 moves vertically into either of its two positions when the area of the tape to be presented to the printing point is changed.
If during the operation the carriage return and line spacing lever 4 oscillates counterclockwise (seen in fig. 4), the connecting rod 136 will be pushed back by. its position of FIG. 9 until the front end of slot 139 engages bolt 140.
During this lost movement of the connecting rod 136, the line spacing pawl 51 will have gone through this lost movement. The continuous movement of the line spacing lever will push the connecting rod 136 further back and swing the arm 141 and shaft 142 simultaneously with the space movement of the C-drum lines. Shaft oscillation 142 will swing arm 143 and pull the connecting rod back, thereby swinging the elbow lever 147 and bringing the support plate 83 to the left (seen in fig. 4). During this movement of the plate 83 and of the rollers 93, 94 which it carries, the roller 94 will move away from the roller 93 and, as already explained above, will return to the roller 93 to grab the tape.
During this time, the line spacing movement of lever 4 will have been completed and a subsequent manual effort applied to the lever will bring the carriage in the return direction, while the rollers 109, 110 of the means IF will be released from the tape. 57 and the rollers 93, 94 will have gripped the tape and will have exerted a tension contrary to the direction of the feed, this tension being thwarted by the means G for raising the tape which will be described below. When the carriage is returned to its starting position, the line spacing lever 4 will be disengaged and allow the spring 122 to return to the position shown in fig. 4, where the rollers 109 and 110 have gripped the tape 57.
This return of lever 4 will cease the retaining action of lever 147 on plate 83 and allow spring 88 to pull plate and rollers 93, 94 to the right and achieve final ribbon tension for printing. of a new line.
A device is provided for releasing the rollers 109 and 110 of the means F and the rollers 93, 94 of the means E when the mechanism of the exhaust of the carriage is disabled. This device comprises an arm 152 articulated at 153 on the end plate 3 of the carriage (FIG. 4) and projecting on the bar-handle 39. An arm 154 (FIG. 9), projecting vertically on the arm 152, is provided with -a journal 155 engaged in a slot 156 -of the connecting rod 136.
An arm 157 ,. articulated at 158 on the end plate .3 '@ of the carriage, protrudes on bar 39 and has a crank 159 articulated at 160 on the end of a connecting rod 161, the other end of which is articulated -in 162 on the arm 97a of the elbow lever 97. If: the rack 10 is raised by the lowering of one: of the levers 13, 13 ', or by the lowering: of the button 29, the arms 15: 2 and 157 will be . lifted.
Lifting arm 152 will swing arm 154 and, by means of journal 155, push connecting rod 136 back and swing shaft 142 and move plate and rollers 93, 94 to the left, (seen in fig. 4). The backward movement of the connecting rod 136 will also oscillate the lever 45 enough to move the roller 110 away from the means. lF of roller 109. Lifting arm 157 by bar 39 will cause crank 159 to swing backwards, pull on connecting rod 161, and swing crank lever 97, so as to produce relative separation of the rollers. 93, 94. The crank 159 serves to separate the rolls 93, 94 and to facilitate the introduction of the tape between these rollers without separating the rolls 109 and 110.
The lifting means C receives the tape passing from the placement guide 124 around a guide flanged pulley 163 mounted on its arm 164 which can oscillate on a pivot 165 provided in a support 166 carried by the main frame A. The tape passes the roller 163 around a flanged pulley 167 carried by a support 168 attached to the support. 166. The tape 57 passes from the roll 167 down around a flanged roll 169 mounted on a support 170 carried by the frame 171 of the lifting means, attached to the main frame at 172 (Fig. 10). The tape passes from the roll 169 to a winding reel 173 mounted idly on a shaft 174 mounted in the frame 171.
Connections interspersed between take-up reel 173 and frame B serve to run the reel during the carriage letter spacing movement, but not at all during its return movement.
A gear wheel 175 (fin. 9), attached to the barrel 5, engages a wheel 176 fixed on a shaft 177 mounted on a support 178 which is attached at 179 to the frame 171 of the mechanism. A bevel wheel 180, fixed on the shaft 177, meshes with a wheel 181 fixed on a shaft 182 mounted on the frame of the mechanism 171 and a bevel wheel 183 (fig. 10), fixed on the shaft 182, meshes with a bevel wheel 184 connected by the stop screw 185 with a sleeve 186. According to fig. 20, the sleeve 186 passes through a support 187 mounted on the frame of the mechanism 171. A coupling claw 188, integral with the sleeve 186 by means of a stop screw 189, cooperates with the bevel wheel 184 and maintains the sleeve 186 stationary. A shaft 190 is provided with an upper part 191 of reduced diameter, on which the sleeve rotates.
A shoulder 192, at the junction of the solid part and the reduced part of the shaft 190, and a washer 193 at the end of the reduced part, limit the ends of the sleeve 18G to ensure the shaft against any movement. axially.
An element 194 of a claw clutch can slide on the shaft 19 () but participates in the rotations of this shaft by a pin 195 engaged in a slot 196 provided in the collar 197 which is secured to the shaft 190 thanks to a stop screw 198. A spring 199, interposed between this collar 197 and the clutch element 194, brings and normally maintains the element 194 in a raised position as shown in FIG. 11), where element 194 is in cooperative engagement with a spring loaded pawl element 900, attached at 201 to upper clutch element 194.
A conical wheel 202, fixed to the lower end of the shaft 190 by a stop screw 203, meshes with a wheel 204 fixed to the shaft 174 by a stop screw 205 (Fig. 10).
To transmit the movement of the shaft 174 to the spool 173, a pawl 206 is pivoted at 207 (FIG. 3) on an arm 208 integral with the shaft 174 and is brought, by a spring 209, into elastic engagement with a star wheel 210 integral with the lifting spool 173. When the carriage is driven in the letter spacing direction, the motion will be transmitted by the 188-20 gear and clutch train (I-194 to shaft 174 and will rotate the arm 208 and pawl 206 in the direction that turns the coil 1 "r3 in the direction of arrow C, in figures 3, 9 and 10.
The gear ratio between the elia- riot and the a.rbre 174 is. such that the shaft 174 seeks to rotate the spool 173 at such a speed that the tape is. wound up faster than it is brought by the rollers 1119, 11O of the means F.
The slippage control device consisting of the pawl 206 and the toothed wheel 210 causes the spool 173 to be actuated at a speed which corresponds exactly to the speed of the fed tape and at the same time maintains the tape in tension, between the means F and the spool, so that the tape is wound up in a taut state. The teeth of wheel 210 have the same inclination on both sides and the angle is such that there is no positive control connection between the pawl 206 and the toothed wheel. The serration provides a greater frictional contact between the pawl and the teeth than would be expected if the circumference of the wheel were smooth.
Thus, the pawl 206 actuates the winding spool by friction to keep the tape taut; however, the inclined surfaces of the teeth can lift the pawl and allow relative sliding between the pawl and wheel when the necessary tension has been reached. Since the pawl 206 acts on the circumference of the toothed wheel 210, no undesired pressure is exerted on the spool.
During the return, the clutch elements 188 and 200 will rotate backwards and the element 200 slides ineffectively over the teeth of the element 194 without transmitting movement. To prevent reverse rotation of the winding spool 173, a retaining pawl 211, articulated at 212 on the frame 171 of the mechanism, has been provided. This pawl is actuated by a spring 213 and engages a fine serrated ratchet 214 mounted on the winding spool.
To allow removal of the tape, from spool 173, after it has been fully wound up, and return it to supply spool 60 to advance the tape. along the print line and present a new area to print, this reel 173 consists of two discs 215-216 placed on both sides of a removable core 68 fitted on a hub 216a. The core is forced to rotate with the disc 216 by means of a pin 217 engaged in a perforation in the core. A collar 218, integral with the shaft 174 by means of a stop screw 219, has an annular groove 220 in which is engaged a pin 221 carried by a spring 222 screwed onto a button 223.
Preferably, the button 223 is fixed in the disc 215, so that when the pin 221 is withdrawn from the groove 220, the button 223 and the disc 215 can be removed as a single piece, after which the core 68 carrying the coiled tape can be easily removed and transferred to the supply spool.
As already said, the rolls of means E and F, when the tab 29 key is lowered, are delivered from the tape so as not to feed tape during the tabulation operation. To prevent the take-up reel from pulling tape from the reserve during tabulation, means are provided for disengaging clutch members 200 and 194 when key 29 is depressed. A shaft 224 is mounted in the frame A at 22 and 226 (fig. 1) and is provided at one end with an arm 227 articulated at 228 on a connecting rod 229 (fig. 3) -whose lower end forms a loop in which is engaged a journal 231 fixed to the lever of the button 29.
An arm 232, integral with the shaft 224, is articulated at 233 at the front end of a connecting rod 234, the rear end of which is articulated at 235 to a lever 236 articulated at 237 on the frame 171 of the mechanism. The lever 236 carries a button 238 which: engages the flange 194a @de, the element 194 of the clutch (fig. 20).
A spring 239, attached to lever 236, normally holds the lever in position with button 238 raised to relieve pressure on flange 194a and to allow spring 199 to hold clutch element 194 in operative engagement with. the spring-loaded pawl 200.
When the tab key 29 is down, the journal. 231 will contact the bottom of the loop 230 and lower the connecting rod 229 to oscillate the arm 227, the shaft 224 and the arm 232 and pull the connecting rod 234 towards the front of the machine. This movement will swing lever 236 and lower clutch clamp 194a by means of journal 238, so that clutch element 194 assumes the position of FIG. 20 where the pawl 200 is out of engagement. Thus the movement of the carriage in the direction of spacing of the letters during.
the tab will not pass the motion to reel 173.
Fig. 16 shows a modified form of the reel coil clutch control. The parts shown in this modification are the same as those shown in Figs. 10 and 20 and which form the clutch, with the exception of the clutch disc 188a, in the modification, which has rigid teeth 188b instead of an elastic spring as in 200 of the first form of execution.
When the carriage has been moved to the left considerably beyond the position shown in fig. 1, the tape 57 will be stretched from the roller 70, opposite the axis of the drum, to beyond the right end of the drum C. If the button which is used to turn this drum was fixed on the shaft 40 , in order to rotate around the same axis as the drum, as is usual, the button would be placed immediately behind and near the tape 57. In such a position, it would be difficult for the operator to operate the button without disturbing the operator. tape and, although the operator was careful not to touch it, the operator's sleeve or cuff could rub the tape.
This inconvenience is avoided by placing the button, which is used to turn the drum, at a certain level above the print line, by interposing start-up connections between the button and the axis of the drum. bour. In the machine shown, the shaft 40 has an axial extension 40a which is housed at 240, 241 in an extension 242 of the support 73 (FIG. 12). A gear 243, mounted on the extension 40a (fig. 5) of the drum, meshes with an idle gear 344 mounted on a small pin 245 which is carried by the extension 242. This idle gear 244 meshes g with a gear 246 integral with of a shaft 247 which carries a button 248, which serves to turn the drum C. As shown in FIG. 5, the button 248 is placed well above the ribbon and can be operated without risking (disturbing the supply of the ru ban.
Getting started.
To prepare the machine for starting up, the supports 71 and 164 are arranged so as to place the flanged pulleys 70, 163 as indicated in fig. 1. The tape 57 of the supply reel 60 is brought around the flanged pulleys 70, 91. The crank 159 is pushed back to cushion the crank lever 9 7 and to move the roller 94 away from the means E of the roller. 93, after which the tape is threaded between the rollers 94, 93 and is drawn along the pressure line of the drum. The row spacing lever 4 sorrel just enough to separate the roll 110 from the roll 109, belonging to the means F, and the tape is introduced between the rolls 109 (110).
This line spacing lever 4 can then be released to allow the roller 110 to press the tape against the roller 109 and the tape can then be pulled by hand to the left as long as the rotation of the rollers 109 and 110 around. their pins 111, 117 respectively. This rotation can take place without resistance from the pawls 115, 120. Then the tape is introduced through the U-shaped guide 128 and from there successively around the flanged pulleys 163, 167, 169 and , from there to the take-up reel 173.
This spool can be rotated several times by hand to retain the end of the tape on the core 68 and polish perform a. initial tension of the length of the tape extended between the winding reel and the supply means F. The tape movement to the left, produced by a hand rotation of the take-up reel <B> 173. </B> can be accomplished without resistance from the rollers 109, 110 because these rollers can turn freely in the direction of arrows a and <B><I>d</I> </B> in fi--. <B> 6. </B>
L n of the levers 13 or <B> 13 '</B> for releasing the carriage is lowered to raise the mesh 10 and thereby deliver the mechanism, escape, separating at the same time the rollers belonging to means E and F The carriage is then moved freely in the letter spacing direction to test the resistance of the supply spool 60. This resistance should be sufficient to prevent the take-up spool 173 from being dragged to remove tape from the spool. supply coil 60.
The adjustment is made by tightening the knurled nut 62 until the supply spool 60 retains the tape 57 and take-up spool 173 firmly enough to cause the control pawl 206 to slip on the wheel. ratchet 210.
Then the printing is carried out in the usual manner and, as the carriage advances in the direction of letter spacing, the rollers 109 and 110 of the means F, which are not able to turn back, will drive the tape 57 together with the drum. The tape extended to the left beyond the means F will be kept taut and wound up by the spool 173, as described above.
If, during the printing of a line, a tabulator operation is performed, a depressing of the tabulator key 29 will separate the rollers 94 and 109 from the respective rollers 93, 110 and, at the same time, stop the advance. the take-up reel 173 and will thus allow the carriage to advance freely without bringing ribbon beyond the point of impression, while no printing will be carried out and <I> waste </I> will be avoided as long as the The escape mechanism is put out of action in the manner described, no movement of the carriage, in any direction, can produce an advance of the tape 57. If the carriage is to be inverted, the pawl 200 will slide empty on. the clutch element 194 without rotating the shafts 190, 174.
If the carriage moves freely in the letter spacing direction while exhaust is disabled, shafts 190, 174 will be moved, by barrel 5, junction gear and clutch 200-194 , but the take-up reel 173 will not rotate because of the friction made on the supply spool 60, so that the take-up spool 173 will remain stationary and the pawl 206 will slide empty on the ratchet 210.
If it is desired to turn the cart over without giving the drum the proper spacing movement, any part integral with the cart such as button 248, which is used to turn the drum, can be pressed to the operator's right. . This fact will not separate the roll 110 from the roll 109, but the tape 57 will still not be torn because the rolls 109, '110 are free to rotate in the directions of the arrows a - in my view. fig. 6.
If the printing of a line has been completed, the spacer lever 4; lines oscillate and will cause the line spacing movement of the drum and the return of the carriage in the ordinary manner. Movement of the line spacing lever will first move the roll 110, belonging to means F, away from the roll 109, and separate the roll 110 from the tape.
Any further movement of lever 4 will cause the lines of the drum to be spaced and push it. connecting rod 136 back and swinging shaft 142, pulling connecting rod 145 back, swinging by crank lever 147 and moving plate 83, from the position shown in fig. 4 to the left.
During this movement of the plate 83, the roller 94 of the means E will be moved away from the roller 95 until the hook 108 of the lever 97 has passed beyond the cam surface <B> 107, </B> after which the roll 94 will withdraw to clamp the tape against the roll 93, as shown in solid lines in FIG. 12.
Further pressure by hand on the row spacing lever 4: will move the carriage into the position to start a new row and, during this movement, the resistance of rollers 93 and 94 - means E against their rotation will seek. to pull the ribbon 57 to the right. Since the tape is preserved against any movement by the take-up reel 173, a return of the means E together with the carriage will effect a preliminary tension of the tape. If the line spacing lever 4 is released and, by means of the spring 122, returns to its normal position, the spring.
88 of the means E will pull the plate 83 to the right, from the position shown in solid lines in fig. 12 in the position shown in dotted lines in FIG. I2 and in solid lines in fig. 1 and 4. This final movement (the 1a, plate 83 and rollers 93, 94 will produce a final tension on the tape 57 which is provided at the left end of the drum C, against any movement, so that the tape will be, stretched slightly and straightened, thereby correcting any disturbance in its alignment caused by the line spacing movement of drum C and die tape 56.
Due to the very exact alignment of the tape before starting a new print line, made possible by the final ribbon tension described above, printing can be performed separately in the three areas. I, II and III distinct, narrow and longitudinal, without risking overlapping of impressions. When a new ribbon is put into use, the ribbon guide means E can be adjusted as shown in solid lines in fig. 5 and 13 where the plate, <B> 75, </B> which can move vertically, and the parts carried by this plate are in their lower position. Ribbon guide 124, on the left of the carriage, will also be adjusted in its lower position, as shown in solid lines in FIG. 7.
u <I> n </I> Then, the tape will be placed so as to present its central zone I along the printing line as indicated in fig. 13. When this central area has been completely used up, the core 68 is removed from the take-up reel 173 and placed, without inverting it, in the supply reel 60 and the tape is re-introduced between the guides which. , however, are now moved to their upper positions, as shown in dotted wire lines. 5, respectively 7. The ribbon will then be guided so that zone II is led along the printing line.
After zone II has been completely used up, the core 68, on which the tape is wound, is again withdrawn from the take-up spool 173, brought back to the supply spool 60, but this time it must be reversed on the supply spool and the tape should be fed through the guides so that Zone III is presented along the print line.
The tape placement, feed and tension means explained herein can be easily applied to a normal machine to adapt it to be used for hectography or photo-offset work. A machine equipped with such means can be quickly adapted also for ordinary work without it being necessary to remove any part.
