Description
Additional patent to main patent No. 158243. Process for the preparation of a high molecular weight sulfonic acid. It has been found that new, water-soluble condensation products can be obtained if solid, acid-condensed synthetic resins based on formaldehyde are subjected to a treatment with phenol, its homologues or substitution products and the resulting homogeneous mass is treated with sulfonating agents.
The present invention now relates to a method for the preparation of a high molecular weight sulfonic acid, characterized in that a synthetic resin obtained by condensation of p-cresol and urea with formaldehyde using acidic catalysts is dissolved in phenol and with sulfonating agents until it is water-soluble Funds treated.
In the form of its alkali salt, the new body represents a weakly colored, amorphous mass. In addition to being a tanning agent, the product can also serve as a wool reservation agent in semi-wool dyeing. <I> Example: </I> A resin obtained by condensation of 61.5 parts of p-cresol, 24 parts of urea, 80 parts of formaldehyde and 1-6 parts of sulfuric acid 4% is mixed with 105 parts of phenol at <B> 70 '</B> stirred until a homogeneous solution of the resin has formed.
Between 50 to <B> 90 '</B> 108 parts of sulfuric acid <B> 6.6' </B> B6 are now allowed to flow in and stirring is continued until a sample in the same volume of water is clearly soluble even in the cold. After the excess acid is blunted with sodium carbonate, the soluble resin can be obtained as a weakly colored, amorphous mass by salting out with sodium chloride or by evaporation; Their solutions have a strong precipitating effect on basic dyes, have strong glue-precipitating properties and turn a reddish blue color with ferric chloride.
