Description
Process with presentation of a high molecular weight sulfonic acid. It has been found that new, water-soluble condensation products can be obtained if solid, acid-condensed synthetic resins based on formaldehyde are treated with phenol, its homologues or substitution products and the resulting homogeneous mass is also subjected. treated with sulphonating agents.
The present invention relates to a method for the preparation of a high-molecular sulfonic acid, characterized in that a synthetic resin obtained by condensation of o-cresol and urea with formaldehyde using acidic catalysts is dissolved in phenol and up to Water solubility treated with sulfonating agents.
In the form of its alkali salt, the new body represents a weakly colored, amorphous: mass. In addition to being used as a tanning agent, the product can also serve as a wool reservation agent in semi-solid dyeing. Example: A resin obtained by condensing 82 parts of o-cresol, 32 parts of urea, 112 parts of formaldehyde and 21 parts of sulfuric acid 4% is stirred with 125 parts of phenol at 70 'until a homogeneous solution of the resin has arisen.
Between 45 and 95 130 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid are allowed to flow in and stirring is continued until a sample in the same volume of water is clearly soluble even in the cold. After the excess acid has been dulled with sodium carbonate, the soluble resin can be obtained as a weakly colored, amorphous mass by salting out with sodium chloride or by evaporation: its solutions have a strong precipitating effect on basic dyes, are strong. glue-precipitating properties and turn a reddish blue color with ferric chloride.
