Description
Additional patent to main patent No. 158243. Process for the preparation of a high molecular weight sulfonic acid. It has been found that new, water-soluble condensation products can be obtained if solid, acid-condensed synthetic resins based on formaldehyde are treated with phenol, its homologues or substitution products and the resulting homogeneous mass is treated with sulphonating agents.
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a high molecular weight sulfonic acid, characterized in that a synthetic resin obtained by condensation of a technical mixture of the three isomeric cresols and urea with formaldehyde using acidic catalysts is dissolved in phenol and Treated with sulfonating agents until they are water-soluble.
In the form of its alkali salt, the new body represents a weakly colored, amorphous mass. In addition to being a tanning agent, the product can also serve as a wool reservation agent in semi-wool dyeing.
<I> Example: </I> 75 parts of a resin obtained by condensing 85 parts of crude cresol with 24 parts of urea, 125 parts of formaldehyde and 28 parts of sulfuric acid 4% at 850 are stirred with 98 parts of phenol at 70 ° until homogeneous Solution of the resin has arisen. It is now allowed to flow in between 65 and 100 105 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid and stirring is continued until a sample in the same volume of water is clearly soluble in the cold.
After the excess acid has been blunted with sodium carbonate, the soluble resin can be obtained as a pale, amorphous mass by peeling with sodium chloride or by evaporation; Their solutions have a strong precipitating effect on basic dyes, have strong glue-precipitating properties and turn a reddish blue color with ferric chloride.
