Description

Process for the preparation of a high molecular weight sulfonic acid. It has been found that new, water-soluble condensation products can be obtained if solid, acid-condensed synthetic resins based on formaldehyde are treated with phenol, its homologues or substitution products and the disfiguring homogeneous mass is treated with sulphonating agents.

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a high molecular weight sulfonic acid, characterized in that a synthetic resin obtained by condensation of phenol with formaldehyde using acidic catalysts is dissolved in phenol and treated with sulfonating agents until it is water-soluble.

The new body, in the form of its Alkalisa, Izes, is a self-colored, amorphous mass. In addition to being a tanning agent, the product can also serve as a wool reservation agent in semi-woolen dyeing.

<I> Example: </I> <B> 75 </B> parts of plienol and 120 parts of formaldehyde solution 377o (weight) are initially added after <B> 1.5 </B> parts of concentrated sulfuric acid Heat for 2 hours at <B> 55 </B> ', then at <B> 85' </B> until the mixture is brittle in the cold.

<B> C </B> <B> 85 </B> parts of this resin are fused with <B> 95 </B> parts of phenol and <B> 75 to </B> <B> 105 '</ B> stirred with <B> 95 </B> parts of concentrated sulfuric acid until it is water-soluble. The excess sulfuric acid is removed by any known method and the sodium salt of the resin sulfonic acid is obtained with sodium carbonate by salting out or evaporation. The new compound is a brownish, somewhat hygroscopic, pish-like powder.

Their aqueous solution has strong glue-precipitating properties and turns a strong reddish blue with ferric chloride.
