Description
Process for the preparation of a high molecular weight sulfonic acid. It has been found that new, water-soluble condensation products can be obtained if solid, acid-condensed synthetic resins based on formaldehyde are subjected to a treatment with phenol, its homologues or substitution products and the resulting homogeneous mass is treated with sulfonating agents.
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a high molecular weight sulfonic acid, characterized in that a synthetic resin obtained by condensation of phenol and urea with formaldehyde with the use of acidic catalysts is added to a technical mixture of isomeric xylenols with boiling point <B> 209 / 220 '</B> C and treated with sulfonating agents until they are water-soluble.
In the form of its alkali salt, the new body represents a weakly colored, amorphous mass. In addition to being a tanning agent, the product can also serve as a wool reservation agent in semi-wool dyeing. Example: A resin obtained by condensation of 8.5 parts of phenol, 25 parts of urea, 82 parts of formaldehyde and 45 parts of 2% sulfuric acid is stirred with 165 parts of xylenol at 70 to 80 until a homogeneous solution of the resin is produced .
Between 60 to 98 165 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid are now allowed to flow in and stirring is continued until a sample in the same volume of water is clearly soluble even in the cold. After the excess acid has been blunted with sodium carbonate, the soluble resin can be obtained as a pale, amorphous mass by salting out with sodium chloride or by evaporation; Their solutions have a strong precipitating effect on basic dyes, have strong glue-precipitating properties and turn red-sticky blue with ferric chloride.
