Description
Additional patent to main patent No. 158243. Process for the preparation of a high molecular weight sulfonic acid. It has been found that new, water-soluble condensation products can be obtained if solid, acid-condensed synthetic resins based on formaldehyde are subjected to a treatment with phenol, its homologues or substitution products and the resulting homogeneous mass is treated with sulfonating agents.
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a high molecular weight sulfonic acid, characterized in that a synthetic resin obtained by condensation of a technical mixture of isonereric xylenes with bp. 209/220 0 C and urea with formaldehyde is incorporated into Phenol dissolves and treated with sulfonating agents until it is water-soluble.
In the form of its alkali salt, the new body represents a weakly colored, amorphous mass. In addition to being a tanning agent, the product can also serve as a wool reservation agent in semi-wool dyeing.
Example: 75 parts of a resin obtained by condensation of 120 parts of xylenol, 32 parts of urea, 125 parts of 38% formaldehyde solution and 25 parts of sulfuric acid 4% at 780 stirred with 100 parts of phenol at 700 until a homogeneous solution of the resin has formed.
It is now allowed to flow in between 40 0 and 110 0 125 parts of sulfuric acid of 66 0 B6 and stirring is continued until a sample in the same volume of water is clearly soluble even in the cold. After blunting the excess acid with sodium triunicarbonate, the soluble resin can be pale colored by salting out with sodium chloride or by evaporation; gain amorphous mass; Their solutions have a strong precipitating effect on basic dyes, have strong glue-precipitating properties and turn a reddish blue color with ferric chloride.
