<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

PATENT OF INVENTION "Improvements to combing machines"
The present invention relates to combing machines for textile fibers.
In the English patent No. 16,001 of August 9, 1901, in the name of John William NASMITH, two tear-off rollers have been described and shown, one of which is. the upper tear-off roller *, back and forth while rolling on the other roller, or lower tear-off roller, which rotates in fixed bearings. When it has rolled to the rear position, the roller d The upper tear-off directs the web, being returned for reattachment, to the rotating comb roller, which smooths it down around the periphery of the lower tear-off roll. The forward travel of the upper tear-off roller moves that roller away from the advancing clamp.
The machine built according to the previous patent
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The aforementioned, which is the now well-known "Nasmith" combing machine, has greatly increased production in comparison with the inner Heilmann combing machine, but the length of web brought back or retracted against the rotating combing cylinder is nevertheless limited, and appropriately , with a view to good piecing, that this length is a little greater than half that of the end of the torn web, the length of this end, and therefore the production of the machine, are limited to an oorres extent. laying.
If the length of the web brought back or retracted is greater than a well determined length, the cylinder entrains good fibers which pass into the waste and, even when such a length is limited to practical values, this fact causes a small but perceptible loss.
It is the object of the present invention to provide, in combeusas of the type which is the subject of the relevant English patent, a simple construction and arrangement of parts by which the output of the machine is greatly increased and, moreover, the aforementioned loss of good fibers is entirely avoided.
To this end, the invention comprises two stripping rollers arranged and operating, with respect to the duster, so that, after the stripping and before the end of the web receives its receding movement in Seen from the reattachment, the upper tear off roller rolls down behind the lower tear off roller, the latter being moved as a block away from the combing cylinder to allow this rolling movement of the upper tear off roller, The contact generator of the two rollers thus moves away positively from the cylinder to a sufficient extent so that, during the.
recoil, the end of the web is directed away from said cylinder This movement of the upper tear-down roller may, in fact, continue to such an extent, with respect to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to the lower stripping roller, that the contact generator moved outwards directs the retracted end of the web so as to move it away from the cylinder.
The increase in length of the brought back end of the web and the increase in length of the torn end intended to be attached to the brought back end are thus made practically possible, which increases the production of the combing machine.
In the practice of the invention, the upper tear-off roller of the aforementioned British patent cooperates with the lower tear-off roller in the same way as that described in this patent, i.e., when the roller from arraoha. upper ge has turned backwards, it rolls forward again, during pulling and reattaching, in front of the advancing gripper of the machine, then rolls back again, when reattaching and ripping have been performed ,
The desiderata of the present invention are satisfied by any form of apparatus which allows this sequence of operations to be performed while allowing the bulk removal of the lower tear-off roll and its return to the reattachment point of the lower tear-off roll. such that the entire length of the retracted web end is present at this point for reattaching, and also allowing the upper tear-off roll to fall behind the lower tear-off roll as the latter moves away from the dre cylinder. comber '.
Preferably, the pressure which the rolls must exert on each other in the tear-off is applied to the upper tear-off roller during the tear-off period only and, when the upper tear-off roller falls behind the roll. lower, this pressure is reduced to a value sufficient to keep the two rollers in contact during their relative movement.
We will describe below with more
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
details .a convenient way to apply this variable pressure,
To better understand the 3'invention, we deorera- * hereinafter, with reference to the accompanying drawings, a very convenient and very practical set of parts for achieving it,
On these drawings:
Fig. 1 and 2 are partial sections of one of the heads of a combing machine, all the mechanical parts shown also exist on the other side of the head
Fig. 3 is a partial plan view of some .. some of the parts in fig 2.
Fig. 4 is a schematic view showing the position of the tearing rollers at the start of the tearing,
Figs 1 and 2 are identical except that fig. 2 shows the tear-off rollers in the retracted position and * therefore for the sake of clarity, some of the mechanical details of the fig. 2 have not been shown. fig. 1.
The lower tear-off roller D and two transport rollers C, C 'are mounted in a bearing 1 fixed by a bolt 2 to a spacer connecting two legs 3, one of which is visible on the pins 1 and 2. The legs 3 pivot around an axis 4, a screw 5 making it possible to adjust the height of the roller D. To each leg is rigidly fixed an axis 6 connected by a connecting rod 7 to a part 7a which can pivot around an axis 8 fixed in a lever 9 wedged on the shaft 10. The movement of the shaft 10 is controlled in the usual way by a suitably shaped cam mounted in the faceplate of the machine, a reciprocating movement. being thus communicated to level 1.
A shaft 11, also actuated by a cam device of the faceplate is mounted in a bearing 12 fixed to the frame, this bearing also serving as a support, r a fixed axis 13. On the shaft 11 is wedged a lever 14 or an arm 15 is fixed in an adjustable manner by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
bolt 16. Screws mounted in cast iron lugs 14a with lever 14 allow this adjustment to be made and the roller to be aligned with D. In the upper end of the arm 15 is fixed a pin 17 engaged in a open slot of a lever 18 (freezes 1 and 2).
One end of the lever 18 carries a bearing serving to support the end pivots of the upper stripping roller d ', and the other end of said lever is drilled to receive a bolt B which will be described below in more detail and the removal of which makes it possible to easily remove the lever 18 and the roller of the machine, On 1 * axis 17 pivots a support 19 which has a tower boss. born 20 (fig. 3) on which a forked lever 21 pivots , the bolt B serving to lock the lever 18 and the support 19 to each other, The lever 21 is provided with a projection 22 which receives the square end of the bolt B and maintains this bolt in position during operation , A locking screw 36 is screwed into the square of bolt B.
We will now describe the spring assembly shown to the left of FIGS. 1 and 2 and whose role is to exert on the upper tear-off roller a variable pressure corresponding to the position and the movement of said roller. The forked end of the lever 21 embraces a block 23 to through which passes freely the end of a rod 24, The rod 24 is surrounded by a robust coil spring 25 bearing by its upper end against the block 23 and by its lower end against a block 26 movable on the rod 24 .
The latter pivots by its lower end on an axis 27 fixed in the lever 88 which itself pivots about an axis 29 fixed in the frame of the machine. On the axis 13 pivots an alfiquet 30 which has a slot in which engages the axis 27 integral with the lever 28, the latter and the spring assembly thus being
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
maintained in the working position under normal conditions. A lever 31, also pivoting around the axis 13, carries an axis 32 which receives the lower end of a rod 33 around which is wound a light coil spring 34 interposed between a bottom face of the support 19 and a top face of a collar 33a mounted in an adjustable manner on the rod 33.
A link 35 connecting the axes 32 and 27 allows both of the springs 25 and 34 to be released when it is necessary to remove the lever 18 and the roller for the replenishment and replacement of the. roll by another. In view of this disassembly, when the pawl 30 has been raised, the lever 28 can be pivoted to the left around the axis 29, the axis 32 being driven in this movement.
As soon as the retaining rings 37 come into contact with the block 23, the spring has no action and the forked lever 21 can be pulled down until the projection 22 has been released from the bolt B, the latter can then be removed, When the lever 28 is pivoted, the lever 31 is also driven and, by means of the rod 35, removes the pressure exerted by the spring 34 on the support 19.
The bolt B is then released from the lever 18: and the open slot makes it possible to remove the latter and the roller of *
In the operation of the machine, during the arra. chae the roller D remains in the position of the pins 1 and 4 then seen, as described in the above-mentioned patent, the upper roller rolls around D away from the clamp N which advances, that is to say or'it passes from the position of fig. 4 to that of fig. 1.
The N clamp is withdrawn and the *. paration is carried out, leaving the rear end of the sheet torn off as indicated at T, (fig. 1.) At this moment, the mechanism actuated by the shaft 10 comes into action to remove the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
bearing 1, and consequently the lower tear-off roller D and the conveyor rollers C, C ', of the comb cylinder).? * Y that is to say, make these members pass from the position of fig. 1 to that of fig. 2, while the upper tear-off roller of controlled from the shaft 11 by the axis 17 and the lever 18, falls behind the roller D until its center is - extended at or slightly below that of said roller
D and that the rear end of the torn sheet is at T2 (fig.
2). A little before the roller D has reached its outer position shown in fig. 2, its rotation is reversed, this roller rotating in the direction of the arrow in this figure. This roller momentarily remains in its extreme outer position. , and during this short period of rest, the retreat of the end of the sheet which began during its outward movement ends or nearly ends, and the sheet comes to occupy the position indicated by the extended dotted line T3, at a good distance from the cylinder cover 38. The rollers are then returned to the position of FIG. 4 and operation begins again.
Block movements of the upper stripping roller are allowed freely due to the fact that this roller is mounted in the lever 18 which pivots about the axis 17 and the latter moves around the axis of the shaft 11 (fig. 1 and 3). During these movements, the pressure exerted on the upper tear-off roller d 'is regulated by the springs in the manner which will now be described.
When the roller passes from the position of fig.4 to that of fig. 1 and vice versa, the spring 25 is compressed and the nuts 37 are pushed away from the block 23. On the other hand, when the roller begins to fall from the position of fig.4 to that of fig.2 , the outer end of the lever
21 rises and block 23 comes into contact with the eorous 57.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
screw 36 then leaves lever 21.
Only the slight pressure of the spring 34 is now exerted on the roller d 'to keep it in contact with the roller D. When the roller d' rises again from the position shown in FIG. 2 and is about to reach that of the pin 4, the adjustment screw 36 again contacts the lever 21 and forces it to move away from the nuts 37, thus bringing the pressure into play again. larger of the spring 25.
