<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements to combing machines" This invention relates to machines for combing textile fibers
In the English patent N 16.001 of August 9, 1901. the stripping device for a wick or tuft of fibers frankly combed in the well-known hand Nasmith combing machine has been shown. And the stripping rollers also serving as a lifting device. reattach The production in this machine is however limited to a determined value which depends on the length of the strand or tuft of fibers which can) with a view to the reattachment be brought back against the rotating combing cylinder
The use of separate tear-off rollers and piecing rollers in combing machines has been proposed,
but this separation of the functions of the rollers has given rise to new difficulties. The present invention relates to a textile comber which, while using the stripping device
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of the aforementioned patent,. is provided with an extremely efficient reattachment device for combed fiber strands,
To this end, there is provided, according to the invention, a textile combing machine provided with stripper rollers functioning essentially as described in the aforementioned patent with, in combination, piecing rollers working in conjunction with the stripping rollers, the upper piecing roller. serving to "release" the upper stripper roller during all or most of the tear-off and reattaching operation, the piecing rollers being movable for, after this piecing,
directing downwardly one end of the strand of fibers brought back, substantially vertically, ready for the next reattachment,
Not only are the loose fibers of the thin strand of fibers torn off by the upper stripper roller no longer drawn or removed from said strand, and this in an efficient manner, while the operation of the machine continues, but also, given that the end of the wick brought back is directed downwards as has been said above, the latter is effectively kept out of contact with any surfaces which would tend to disturb the order of the fibers.
In a practical construction, the upper ratchet roller can, in order to disengage the upper stripper roll, remain in adjustable close proximity to the latter, as said and reattaching takes place while the stripper rollers and the piecing rollers are directly adjacent. .
When the piecing is complete or substantially completed, the Lower stain rat roller can be moved to allow the upper reattachment roller to roll down behind it and as the piecing rollers have a slight stop in their outward, or forward, position. recoil operation or
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Back sweeping begins, this operation being completed when the piecing rollers return to the piecing point, the upper roll returning to its original position in close proximity to the upper tear-off roll for the next piecing.
An embodiment of a soot-operated machine according to the invention will now be described, by way of example of an embodiment, with reference to the appended drawing in which t
Fig, 1 is a vertical section showing the stripping and piecing rollers, means for supporting these last rollers and the parts and accessories depending on
Fig 2 is a schematic view of all the rollers at the end of the tie;
FIGS. 3 and 4 respectively showing the positions occupied by the rollers at the start and at the end of the backward movement or backward movement of one end of the strand of fibers for the purpose of reattaching.
In this drawing, the combing cylinder of the machine is shown, in Y
P1 is the corrugated steel corrugated roller, supported in fixed bearings and only intermittently rotated forward.
P and P1 are the piecing rollers; C and C1 two carrying rollers these two pairs of rollers rotating together at the desired times, first in one direction, then in the opposite direction *
The roller D1 is mounted in fixed bearings integral with the frame of the machine The upper roller D is driven by an oscillating rolling movement on D1, as described in the above-mentioned patent by the movement of a weighted hook 1 mounted
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
adjustable on a bar 2 articulated in 3 on an arm 4 wedged on a shaft 5 receiving an oscillating movement of a suitable cam mounted in the headrest of the machine.
At the other end of the bar 2 is attached a spring or a weight constantly acting in the direction of arrow 5
In slides F fixed to the frame of the machine can slide in one direction and the other a carriage K carrying the bearings of the rollers P and C. The sliding movement of the carriage K is communicated to it by a shaft 7 which, at the desired moment , receives an oscillating movement of a cam mounted in the headrest of the machine, This oscillating movement is transmitted to the carriage K by an adjustable connecting rod 8, an elbow lever 9. which pivots around dtun axis 10 integral with the slides F and a connecting rod. 11.
With the upper part of the slides F came an arm 12 of cast iron which is integral with a pin 13 on which is mounted a roller 14.
The bearing of the upper piecing roller P1 consists of a lever L which has a slot 0 surrounding the roller 14, this lever comprising at its end an adjusting screw W which, at the desired moment, abuts against the roller 14. An arm 15 integral with the lever L carries a rotary joint 16 through which passes the rod of a spring 17, the other end of which pivots about an axis 18 integral with the frame of the machine.
On the axis of the roller P1 is mounted the adjustment ring (not shown) described in the English patent N 377.003 of September 5, 1931, This ring abuts against the collar of the end of the roller D and, as it is said in this patent is used to adjust the distance between the rollers P1 and D The spring 17 constantly urges the lever L to the right and, during
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
'the desired period, .maintains the two rollers in immediate proximity and at the desired moment, pushes the screw W against the roller 14,
In addition, it keeps the P1 roll constantly pressed down on the P- roll.
The roller c1 is mounted in any suitable manner so that it rests on the.
upper part of the roller C and participates in its back and forth movement,
Figs 1 and 2 show the parts (in fig.
2 only the rollers have been shown for the sake of clarity) in relative positions which they occupy at the end of the tear-off period. The rear end of the torn strand of fibers having reached the point marked T The roller P remains for all or most of the tear-off period in the immediate vicinity of the roller D1 When the tear-off is or almost complete, as shown in fig. 2 the carriage K is pulled to the left, which allows the roller P1 to roll on D while still remaining pressed against P until the moment when the screw W comes into contact with the roller 14 At this moment, since the P roller continues to be driven by the K carriage
1 the P roll leaves D and falls behind the roll.
9 until its center has come approximately to the level of that of the roller or preferably a little below said level. As it moves away, the P-roller does not rotate, its forward rotation ceasing when the rear end of the torn strand or tuft of fibers reaches the marked position.
T in fig. 2 When the assembly of carriage K and rollers
P and 0 reach the position of fig 3 this assembly is immobilized for a short time, and the reverse rotation begins in the direction of the arrow in fig 3 This directs the bit.
of fibers delivered to the rear languish so much down a good distance from the cap 19 of the cylinder, as shown
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
'in T1When the reverse or backward rotation of the roller P is already partly carried out, this roller P begins to return to its initial position near the roller D1 as shown in FIG.
4 while the reverse rotation ends, with the bit brought back as shown in T2 When the roller P has reached this position, the direction of its rotation changes again and the front end of the new bit The incoming tear off T3 overlaps and reattaches to T2 In the meantime, the upper tear off roller D has rolled to the right of D1 so as to be out of the way of the rising roller P1 when it returns to its upper position.
When ? has reached this position (fig.4) the roller D comes back rolling on D in front of the advancing gripper and the upper comb shown schematically in fig. 4 In this action. he pushes the lever L in front of him, overcoming the resistance of the spring 17 until the parts have returned to the positions they occupy in figs, 1 and 2, the entire operation then being repeated
The rotation of the lower piecing roller P, as well as that of the lower support roller C2, can be effected by any suitable means. For example, one can adopt the cam and rack and pinion mechanisms shown in British Patent No. 2,109 of April 26, 1883 to the names of THOMSON & BARKER.
It was said previously that the C C1 rollers are carrier rollers; they serve to receive the strand of fibers with the end of the new strand attached which arrives from the piecing rollers P, P1 as shown clearly in all the figures of the drawing. The carriage K carries a metal pin N to which is attached a selvedge guide V.
These parts are not essential for tear-off and reattaching operations, but they are useful.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
in the sense that, without the selvedge guide and the rollers, guiding carriers, the selvedges of the wicks would tend to become unraveled and not to be satisfactory, this defect being entirely avoided by these additions, the lower carrying roller C ae moving together with tie roller, lower P
A general arrangement of members has been described which achieves the desired results in a practical manner, but it is understood that the mechanical details may vary. The lever L carrying the upper reattachment roll P1 could, for example,
pivot on another pivoting lever controlled in an adjustable manner by a stop. the downward movement of this roller thus being made possible and effected.
