<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO REGULATORY DEVICES FOR MACHINES
TO DELIVER TOBACCO IN PORTIONS, OR THE SAME "
In order to achieve with the greatest possible accuracy the equalization of the portions of tobacco in the manufacture of the various kinds of tobacco articles such as cigars, cigars-cigarettes, cigarettes, packets of volume smoking tobacco constant, etc ... the following process has already been proposed in French patent N 581,077, filed on May 3, 1924.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Two or more portions of tobacco which are supplied from a container containing the filler tobacco are brought together in a jacket or the like, so as to form a single volume which is then divided into portions which are all of the same. cut. we thus obtain that, even if the primitive portions are unequal to each other, the final portions obtained by dividing this single volume are all equal to each other.
In order for these final portions to have exactly the desired size, however, it is necessary that the initial portions have a constant average size. Due to variations in the filler tobacco or for other reasons, however, this is often not the case.
In the arrangement according to the aforementioned patent, a manual adjustment can be obtained allowing the size of the portions supplied by the fractionator device to be increased or decreased. This adjustment device is, however, quite delicate and it does not always have the desired effect, since often one or more series of portions which are too small or one or more series which are too large are supplied by the fractionator device.
The present invention relates to a device intended to eliminate this drawback.
This device is characterized in that the size of the portions delivered by the fractionator device is automatically adjusted with respect to the size of the previous portion (s), such that the average size of these portions is constant.
The invention is first of all intended for use in cigar or cigar-cigarette machines, but it can also be used for other tobacco machines.
Two embodiments of the invention are shown
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to the attached drawings:
Figs. 1 to 5 show the first embodiment according to which the invention is applied to a fractionator device such as that which is indicated in the patent mentioned above. Fig. 1 shows the device seen from the side partly in section, with the parts in a certain position during operation; Fig. 2 shows the same device with the parts in another operative position; Figs. 3 and 4 respectively show the device seen from the front and from above; Fig. 5 is a section taken along the line A-A of FIG. 1.
Figs. 6 to 8 show the alternative embodiment in which the invention is applied to fractionator devices in which the filler tobacco is fed between a number of ribbons (preferably 3) which form a channel. Fig. 6 is a front view, partly in section, and FIGS. 7 and 8 show the device respectively seen from the side and seen from above.
The liner 1 is provided, in a known manner, with an inlet opening 2 and a knife 3 which, by means of a suitable device (not shown) moves to the position. shown in Fig. 1 (where it forms the bottom of the casing) from the spaced apart position shown in FIG.
2 and by this movement detaches the portion placed on the outside of the envelope, from the mass of tobacco contained in the envelope. Exactly a, above the opening 2 is arranged the channel 4 by which the filling tobacco brought in in portions enters the casing 1. The filling tobacco is brought in the form of portions to channel 4 by means of any known device, for example by means of a device in accordance with the French patent filed on the same day, and for the title "Perfectionnement aux methods and apparatus for removing tobacco in portions from a container and delivering it to the desired location "and which is controlled by the arm 5 by
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
through shaft 12 and another suitable Mechanism (not shown)
so that the size of the portions depends on the angle of the rotational movement of the arm 5. The rod
6 is pivotally mounted at its lower end on an axis 8 which is fixed to the rod 7 sliding vertically, the ¯ rod 6 at its upper end being provided with an axis 9 moving freely in the slot 10 of the arm 5. The rod 7 is driven up and down by a cam or the like, so that the arm 5 receives an oscillatory movement.
On the shaft 12 is articulated a lever provided with three arms 13, 14, 15, the arm 15 being connected by means of a crank 16 with the connecting rod 6, in the middle or near the middle of the latter. On the arm 14 is disposed a counterweight 33 adjustable in the longitudinal direction of the arm by means of screws 32. On a pivot 17, which is fixed to the frame 35, is articulated a lever 18-19 of which an arm 18 is. articulated to the rod
21 which receives a back and forth movement, by means of a cam for example, and which, when it moves upwards, does. turn the lever in a direction such that the oras 19 of the latter which is provided with a pawl engages with the toothed segment 20 and locks the lever 13-14-15 and also the rod 5 with the axis 9 in a specific position.
A block or the like 22 is attached to the rods 60 which receive their movement from a cam or the like. In this block is fixed a bolt 23 from which is suspended a sleeve 24 which is housed in the casing 1. The sleeve 24 thus obtains the same movement as the rods 60. On the bolt 23 rests a piston 25 in the form of a easel and which can move vertically in sleeve 24. Movement of piston 25 to the lowest end position relative to the sleeve is shown in FIG. 1. The upward movement of the piston is limited by the lugs 26 (Fig.1 & 4) on the block 22.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The extensions 28 of block 22 * are fitted with bearings
29 (Fig. 4) in which the amber 30 is journaled. Arms
31 and 32 are attached to this shaft. The arm 32 is pressed by a spring 73 against the piston 25. The arm 31 is disposed exactly above the shaft 13.
The distance between the shaft 12 and the shaft 30 is chosen such, with respect to the movements of the block 22, that in the position of the piston with respect to the sleeve 24, when the latter is in its highest position. , lower (Fig. 2), the axis 9 of the arm 6 has been moved in the slot 10 of the arm 5 by means of the arms 31 and 53 of the lever 13-14-15 to an amplitude corresponding to the movements of the piston 25 by relative to the sleeve 24, this movement in turn depending on the quantity of filler tobacco contained in the casing 1 as will be explained more clearly below.
The arrangement is further such that when the piston is in either of its end positions with respect to sleeve 24, pin 9 is in the corresponding end position in slot 10. The arms 30-31- 32 are provided with anti-friction rollers 36.
The machine acts as follows: After a portion has entered the casing 1 (this portion being indicated in 34 Fig. 1 in hatched), the rods 60 receive a downward movement until the block 22 reaches in the position shown in Fig. 2. The knife 3 then uncovered the lower opening of the liner and the sleeve 24 with the piston 25 then pressed the filler tobacco against the frame 35, the arms 18 and 19 having, immediately before the block 22 reached its position lowest, received a movement such that the arm 19 was disengaged from the segments 20 whereby the lever 13-14-15 was able to rotate freely on the shaft 12 and under the influence of the counterweight 33 pressed the piston 25 downwards by means of arms 31 and 32,
so that the port-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
tion supplied was compressed with the mass of tobacco already contained in the envelope.
From what has just been said and what can be seen in the drawings, it will be understood that the piston compresses the mass of tobacco to a height which corresponds to the effect of compression due to the counter- weight. The axis 9 also has a position in the slot 10 corresponding to the quantity of filler tobacco contained in the sleeve. If, for one reason or another, the supplied portion was small, the piston 25 would move deeper into the sleeve 24, thereby moving the pin 9 in the slot 10 and bringing it closer to the pivot of the arm 5. Conversely the pin 9 would move outward in slot 10 if the supplied portion was larger, piston 25 not moving so deep.
Pin 9 in slot 10 is secured in position by arm 19 engaging segment 20 immediately before block 22 begins to return to position 1a. higher. The rod 7 then receives a movement by which the arm 5 and the shaft 12 rotate in a direction such that a new portion of filling tobacco is introduced into the channel 4 by means of the fractionator device (not shown).
It is clear that the amplitude of the oscillatory movement of the arm 5 depends on the position of the axis 9 in the slot 10. The amplitude of this oscillatory movement of the arm 5, as has just been described. described, determining the size of the portion, it is possible, by virtue of the above-described construction, to obtain that the size of the incoming portion is automatically adjusted by the size of the previous portion, that is to say -Said that if the previous portion was too small the next portion will be larger by a corresponding degree.
In this way, we will obtain that the average portion is constant.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The counterweight 33 can, of course, be replaced by one or more springs.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 show another embodiment of the invention. The invention is applied in this embodiment to devices where the filler tobacco is supplied on ribbons or the like. The tapes 41,42,43 have an intermittent movement in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 7) and the amplitude of each period of movement is about one fifth of the length of the guide plates 44,45 for tobacco filler, plates which are arranged above the ribbons 41,42. In the space between these guide plates, a long piston 46 (which is arranged horizontally) moves up and down. The piston 46 is pivotally suspended at one end (at the right end, Figs. 7 and 8) from a bolt 50 to the arm 51.
This arm 51 is fixed to the end of the shaft 52 which is journaled in the arc 48 on a vertical rod 49. The other end of the piston 46 is suspended from the bolt 50 on the arm 51.
This arm 51 is attached to the end of the shaft 52 which is mounted in the arch 53 attached to the vertical rod 54. An arm 58 is attached to the end of the shaft 52 which is furthest away. piston 46. Stops 55 and 56 protrude from the arc 53 and limit the upward movement of the arms 51 and 52. The piston 46 encloses the axis 50 by an oblong slot 57.
The piston can thus have any position between its lowest position, shown in solid lines in FIG. 7 and its highest position, shown in mixed dotted lines in the same figure, The rods 49 and 54 receive the vertical movement back and forth between these positions, of a cam or the like, during the operation of the machine.
The machine acts as follows:
When the piston 46 is in its most
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
high, the fractionation of the filler tobacco is effected by a suitable fractionation device disposed exactly above the piston, so that the mass falls between the piston 46 and the guide plates 44,45 over the entire length or nearly so. the entire length thereof and finally between the tapes 41 and 42 on the tape 43. This happens when the tapes are at rest.
With the fractionation taking place over the entire length or almost the entire length of the guide plates 44,45, but the mass of tobacco, as a result of the intermittent movement of the ribbons, being displaced by only one fifth of that length between each fraction, the upper layer of the mass brought down will occupy an inclined position in the longitudinal direction of the channel, the latter being first supplied completely with filler tobacco to the anterior part of the guide plates. Normally the piston tilts approximately to the same degree as the level of the tobacco mass. When the tobacco mass has fallen between the ribbons 41,42,45 the rods 49 and 54, and also the piston 46, receive their downward movement.
The piston 46 then comes into contact with the mass of tobacco extended below and depending on the size of the last portion supplied, the piston oscillates more or less around the pivot, 47, this movement being communicated to the arm 58 which, in this position , is pressed down against the arm 13. The arm 13 is arranged and acts in the same way as the arm 13 in the embodiment according to FIGS. 1 and 6, and this is also the case with regard to the regulating mechanism proper, which is not shown in FIG. 6 and 8.
It is thus also obtained, in the embodiment described above, that the size of the last portion supplied determines the size of the following portion. Piston 46, good
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
of course, can be replaced by another device, for example by a roller rolling on the tobacco strip which is formed by the ribbons 41,42,43, this tape measuring the thickness of the tobacco strip and thus actuating the mechanism of corresponding regulator.
In other respects also the mode of construction shown can be modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.
