Automatic drilling lathe provided with a device for periodically withdrawing the drill bit In automatic lathes and other machines of this kind, which automatically drill holes, it is necessary to periodically withdraw the drill bit to rid the hole of chips that the tool loosens and which end up preventing normal penetration of the latter, or even causing the bit to break.
To carry out these repeated drilling and stripping operations, a device is used which is generally composed of two cams acting alternately on the lever controlling the advance of the drilling spindle. One of these cams causes the piercing motion and the second causes repeated retraction motions for stripping. It is clear that these last movements cannot be very fast and that, given the speed of rotation of the spindle, the stripping cam is generally mounted on an axis comprising a reduction train which rotates said cam. at an appropriate reduced speed.
Another device used for the same purpose comprises, on the one hand, a cam and, on the other hand, a nose cooperating with this cam to move the drill back. In this device, the cam is arranged concentrically with respect to the spindle with which it is connected by a gear train communicating to it a speed which differs little from that of the spindle so that the contacts of the cam and the nose are periodi - ques and cause, as opposed to their thickness, the withdrawal of the spindle, therefore fo ret.
Regardless of the device used, the drilling cam continues its rotation for the time required for unclogging and consequently would allow the advance lever to continue its stroke if it was not retained by the unclogging cam. It follows that the penetration of the drill, after stripping, and for a short time, is no longer controlled by the drilling cam, but only by the res sort which advances the spindle. As a result, the drill first abuts the bottom of the hole and then takes a larger chip than that which has been normally calculated, which has a detrimental effect on the drill, so that the smoothness and quality of the drilling leave something to be desired.
The automatic piercing lathe, object of the invention, does not have the drawbacks mentioned above. Its drill is provided with a device for periodic withdrawal of the drill comprising two control cams, one of which, called the drilling cam, allows the advance of the drilling spindle carrying the drill, while the other, called the stripping cam, causes the periodic withdrawal of said piercing spindle.
The peculiarity of this automatic lathe, object of the invention, however lies in the fact that the stripping cam and its control means are mounted on a movable support which is subjected to the action of a return spring tending to keep it in control with the drilling cam, which thereby acts on the drilling spindle by means of the stripping cam. The drawing represents, by way of example, drills belonging to four different embodiments of the automatic lathe object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view, partly in section, of the piercer belonging to the first embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a side view of part of this piercer.
Fig. 3 illustrates one of the cams of this piercer in the state of development.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view, partly in section, of the piercer belonging to the second embodiment.
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the drill belonging to the third embodiment, and FIG. 6 is a top view of the piercer belonging to the fourth embodiment. In fig. 1, 10 is the drilling spindle which, at its front end, carries a drill 11. For orientation, two of the chisels 12 of the automatic lathe have also been indicated. The piercing spindle 10 is rotatably mounted in the body 13 of the piercer.
The rotational movement is imparted to this spindle by means of a pulley 14 mounted loose on the latter and provided with axial coupling rods 15 which can slide in holes of a control disc 16 wedged on the rear end of the spindle. the drilling spindle 10. This spindle is capable of being moved axially against a compression spring 17. Its forward movement is imparted to it from a cam 18 in the form of a bell . This cam, called the drilling cam, is wedged on the camshaft 19 of the automatic lathe. This shaft carries several other cams controlling the various functions of the automatic lathe.
In the body 13 of the drill is mounted a slide 20 in the form of a hollow rod subjected to the action of a tension spring 21, one of the two attachment points of which is located at the rear end of this slide and the other, to the front part of the body of the drill 13. The slide 20 carries, at its rear end, a drive arm 22 which, by known adjustable means, is in control connection with the drilling spindle 10. On the body 13 is pi voted a double actuating lever 23, one of the arms of which is articulated to a drive ring 24 fixed on the slide 20, while the other arm is supported by its end carrying a roller 23a, on the control surface of a cam 25 in the form of a bell and being called the stripping cam.
This cam is mounted on an oscillating support 26, capable of oscillating about an axis; on this support are also mounted the control means of this cam, the latter comprising a worm gear itself actuated by means of a pulley 26b. The support 26 is provided with a bearing spout 26a which is held, by means of a return spring 27, in contact with the control surface of the drilling cam 18.
The operation of the piercer described above is as follows The piercing pin 10 is advanced, against the action of the spring 17, by the slide 20 which, itself, is subjected to the action of the spring traction 21.
The advance movement of the slide 20, respectively of the drilling spindle 10, is regulated by the drilling cam 1.8 which, by means of the actuating lever 23 and parts intercalated between it and the latter, acts on the slide 20, respectively on the drilling spindle 10, to prevent the latter from exceeding the speed of penetration of the drill which is determined by the control surface of the drilling cam.
On the other hand, the slide 20 and, therefore, the piercing spindle 10 periodically perform a withdrawal movement due to the fact that the actuating lever 23 is moved by the cam 25, against. the action of the tension spring 21, on each revolution of the cam. As shown in fig. 3, this cam 25 has three different slopes a, b and c. The slope a has the effect of rapidly moving back the drilling spindle 10 and therefore the drill 11.
The slope b allows the spindle to advance quickly to resume roughly the position it occupied before its withdrawal, while the slope c is calculated so as to obtain a progressive penetration of the drill 11 until the moment when the drilling cam 18 acts again to control the advance of the drill. It can therefore be seen that the drilling cam 18 does not act directly on the actuating lever 23, but on the support 26 of the clearing cam 25 on which the roller 23a of the lever 23 bears. As a result, the stripping cam 25 is moved exactly within the limits determined by the control surface of the drilling cam 18.
The drilling cam can therefore be calculated and executed without taking into account the stripping operations and their frequency.
Instead of being mounted on an oscillating support, the unclogging cam and its control means could be mounted on a sliding support, as shown in FIG. 4 in which 28 is the camshaft, 29 the drilling cam, 30 the sliding support moving parallel to the drilling spindle and provided with a bearing nose 30a cooperating with the control surface of the drilling cam. drilling 29; the unclogging cam 31 is controlled in the same way as the unclogging cam designated by 25 in FIG. 1, and the actuating lever 32, controlled by the clearing cam 31, is connected to the slide 20 (FIG. 1).
Here, as in the drilling apparatus shown in FIG. 1, the two cams, namely drilling and stripping, are bell-shaped.
In fig. 5 there is shown a drilling apparatus in which the stripping cam 34 and its control means are mounted on an oscillating support designated here by 35. On the other hand, the drilling cam 36 fixed on the camshaft 28 has here a flat shape, that is to say the shape of a disc, this cam oscillating the support 35 around an axis, designated by 37, by means of an oscillating lever 38 provided with a spout of support 38a cooperating with cam 36 and a pressure pin 38b acting on a projecting part 35a of support 35.
Here too, the unclogging cam 34 causes, by means of the actuating lever 39, a periodic withdrawal of the slide 20, respectively of the spindle 10 (FIG. 1).
A similar result is obtained with the drilling device shown in FIG. 6, in which both the drilling cam 41 mounted on the camshaft 42 and the stripping cam 43 mounted with its control means on a sliding support 44 are formed by disc cams. The cam 41 acts on the bearing portion 44â of the support 44 to move the latter perpendicular to the camshaft 42 against the return spring 45, while the clearance cam acts, for its part, on the actuating lever 46 executed here in the form of an angled lever.
