Machine for making saw blades. The present invention relates to a machine intended for making saw blades from a continuous metal wire in order to form teeth therein by upsetting at points distributed along this wire; the saw blades are thus obtained by cutting the wire into elements each comprising at least one tooth.
The invention provides in such a machine a device for advancing a metal wire, a cutting tool rotating around the axis of the wire and intended to form a groove in the wire to a determined depth, this cutting tool having a sharp edge formed between a front abutment surface, and an inclined rear surface making a determined angle with the axis of the wire, and means coming into contact with the surface of the wire to prevent any deformation of the latter, these means being arranged with respect to the. on the front stop face of the cutting member, at a distance approximately equal to the width measured in the transverse direction of the tooth to be drilled in the wire.
Saw blades drawn up in accordance with. the invention of different dimensions, both as regards the diameter and the length of the blade. These blades are particularly suitable for their use in scroll saws, the speed of which is often changed during the sawing operation. In the past, blades (the such saws exhibited, usually in cross-section, a rectangular section and teeth arranged along one edge; although these blades were relatively small, it was impossible, during their use, to give the kerf a direction perpendicular to the direction previously followed without carrying out a rounding.
In any case, it was not possible for such blades to rotate at an angle less than a right angle, and the limits thus imposed on their operation were known and accepted. In addition, these blades were relatively thin and therefore exhibited different breaking strengths compared to forces acting in different directions, and as a result they were easily broken under the effect of a force at which they would have resisted if it had been applied in another direction.
The object of the present invention is precisely, given the difficulties and drawbacks presented by these prior blades, a machine making it possible to establish saw blades capable of working in all directions, and of being moved at right angles or acute in relation to the direction of work previously followed, while remaining maintained in the material being sawed.
The machine according to the invention can be advantageously designed so as to form the saw blades from an endless hardened wire and can be adjusted so as to be able to machine metal wires of different diameters. It can operate without special supervision, after having been started.
The machine according to the invention thus serves for the establishment of saw blades with helical shaped teeth of the type described in Swiss patent N 292160 of the applicants. The attached drawing represents, by way of example. ple, several embodiments of the ma chine object of the invention.

Figs. 10 and 11 show a variant of the mounting of the tool intended to form the blade.
The drawing shows a preferred embodiment of the machine according to the invention, which machine has three main parts, namely a lathe generally designated by the reference numeral 11, a device for feeding wire 100 designated in a general manner by the reference 12 and a head serving as the. formation of the blade and generally designated by the reference 13.
If we refer particularly to the lathe 11 which may be of an ordinary known type, we see that it comprises a doll 16 carried by a plate 17 itself carried by the frame of the lathe 18. A hollow shaft 21 s 'extends from the front end of the tailstock 16 and revolves in a bearing 22. The drive of this shaft 21 takes place preferably by an electric motor, not shown, to which it is connected in a manner. appropriate by a device which does not form part of the present invention.
The blade forming head 13 is carried by the shaft 21 and rotates with the latter around the wire 1.00, as will be explained in detail below.
The wire feed mechanism 12 is arranged in front of the head 13 and. of the doll 16 and comprises a vertical upright 26 (Fig. 3) fixed at its lower end on the support plate 17 by means of bolts 27 (Fig. 3). The upper end of the upright 26 is extended so as to form two parallel semi-cylindrical arms 28, these arms 28 having their faces at a small distance from each other, as can be seen in particular at fig. 3.
Two rollers 31 and 32 intended to bring the wire are carried by this upright 26 in a position such that their peripheries which are grooved can come into rolling contact in a horizontal plane passing through the axis of the shaft 21. The roller lower 31 is keyed on a horizontal shaft 34 carried in bearings 36 and 37 housed in a transverse bore 42 of the support 26 (FIG. 6).
The upper roller 32 is placed between the walls 28 and can. journal on a single bearing 38 whose inner ring is mounted on a shaft 39 carried by the descending arms of a U clevis 41, able to slide vertically in the upright 26, while the lower roller 31 is fixedly mounted on the shaft 34. The position of the upper roller 32 can thus be adjusted in the vertical direction; for this purpose, a horizontal plate 43 is mounted on the upper part of the upright 26 by means of two vertical bolts which pass through it and are screwed into the walls 28.
An adjusting screw 46 which can be turned by hand is. screwed into the center of the plate 43 and comes into contact with a seat 47 covering the upper part of a coil spring 48 resting on the: yoke 41. The spring 48 re constantly pushes the yoke down to bring the roller 32 in contact with the lower roller 31. Since the force of the spring 48 can be modified by adjusting the screw 46 against the upwardly directed reaction exerted by the roller 32, it is therefore possible to 'allow different wire sizes and wire size changes between the grooved surfaces of rollers 31. and 32.
The rollers 31- and 32 are intended and designed to ensure the advancement of the wire in the ma elâne and, for this purpose, the lower roller 31 is driven mechanically. To achieve this result, the shaft 34 is extended laterally in a casing or gearbox arranged vertically and which carries the outer end of this shaft 34 by means of a ball bearing 52. The casing 51 itself. same is fixed by bolts 53 on the side of the plate 17 and it is fixed relative to the device 12 for advancing the wire. A device is provided for driving the shaft 34 which connects it to the lathe drive motor.
This device is constituted by a helical wheel 54 mounted near the outer end of the shaft 34 and capable of engaging a toothed wheel 56 mounted at the upper end of a vertical shaft 57. The latter is journaled in the bearings 58 and 59 disposed respectively in the upper and lower walls of the casing, the lower end of this vertical shaft carrying a helical wheel 61 meshing with a wheel 62. The latter is wedged on a back shaft. Element 63 extending rearwardly from the casing 51 into a transmission casing 64 disposed below the poe 16, and driven at constant speed during operation of the machine (FIG. 2).
In the event that a wire is placed between the rollers, as shown in fig. 4, the lower roller 31 rotates counterclockwise so that the thread advances towards the head 13.
As for the head 13 used for working the wire, it comprises a series of members carried by a hollow cylindrical sleeve 71 extending at its outer end to form a head 72 (FIG. 4) and threaded at its other. end for receiving the reduced diameter end 73 of the shaft 21. At the front end of the head 72 is fixed a plate 76 via, for example, a bolt 77; this plate 76 has a central opening forming a seat for a central support plate 79 held in place by the same bolt 77.
The plate 79 is itself axially bored to receive, with the interposition of a sleeve 81 (shown in FIG. 8), a guide 82, the front conical tip of which penetrates into the gap separating the rollers 31 and 32 for directly receive the wire coming out of the rollers. The guide 82 thus rotates integrally with the hollow shaft 21; this guide is made of tungsten carbide or a very hard wear resistant metal and has a longitudinal bore 83 which fits tightly over the wire.
The wire exits the guide 82 through the opposite surface of the plate 79 and slides over an anvil element 86 which carries it, this anvil also being made of a very hard wear-resistant material and fixed to the facing face of the. plate 79 by screws 87. The upper surface of the slot 86 is slightly notched to form a V-shaped groove 88, as can be seen more clearly in FIG. 9, so as to form a seat for centering the wire coming out of the guide 82.
To ensure a perfectly correct positioning of the wire on this seat, there is provided on the guide 82 a cantilevered shoulder 89 (fig. 8) disposed above the groove 88, and extending to approximately to above the edge of the anvil, as can be seen more clearly in fig. 5.
It is at the surface of the anvil and approximately 0.25 mm inside from the end of the groove 88 thereof that the teeth or helical threads are cut in the wire . In reality, the teeth are driven back into the material of the wire by means of a cutting edge roller 91 mounted rotativ owed. on a 92 head spindle. This spindle is mounted on a flat head of a. cylindrical plunger 93 capable of rotating and \ of moving vertically in the head of the sleeve 72, and this plunger is fixed by its upper end to. a plate 96 via a screw 97.
Two guide pins 98 are fixed to the head of the sleeve 72 in milled recesses 99 7), and their upper ends pass through openings 101 formed in the plate 96; a coil spring 102 surrounds each of the pins 98 for pushing back at all times. the plate 96 outwards by moving the cutting roller 91 away from the anvil 86.
To allow modification of the inclination of the teeth, the cylindrical plunger 93 and, consequently, the roller. cutting edge 91. can be angularly adjusted relative to the plate 96, when the components are removed; this can be done by first unscrewing screw 97, which allows. to turn the plunger 93) by hand and thus place the plunger, and hence the cutting roller, at the desired angle, after which the screw 97 is tightened. preferred embodiment, the plane of the roller 91 forms an angle of approximately 15 with the normal to the grain and comes into contact with the latter at a distance of approximately 0.25 mm inside the external face of the anvil 86.
This angle can be chosen at will, but the angle of 15 is considered very advantageous.
To push the cutting roller 91 back into the position for which it is engaged with the wire to form a thread therein, as shown in FIG. 5, a vertical direction pressure is exerted on the plunger 93 and more particularly on the head of the screw 97, this head being slightly recessed. The pressure is exerted on this head by means of a screw 106 adjusted by hand, having a kneaded head and. being screwed into an arm 107 articulated from the front in 108 on the plate 76.
So much. that the arm 107 is stationary, the key pressure of the roller 91. and the depth of the pass can be adjusted by hand by acting on the screw 106. The continuous wire that is to be transformed into a saw blade is shown at 1.00 in the drawing and advances at a uniform speed in front of the tool 91. which forms there, by upsetting, a helical groove by pushing back towards the exterior a raised tooth heli coidal to. acute angular profile, and disposed in the immediate vicinity. of the helical groove.
The metal is therefore not cut in the wire and there is no lost metal, but on the contrary the metal is simply driven back, as indicated at the end. 5.
The teeth are formed on lon-binders. determined- of yarn, these different \ lengths being. separated by wire elements not subjected to the action of the tool or cutting roller. These latter elements form the ends of the blades cut from the wire and each carrying one tooth and. they can be deformed at their ends to allow the fixing of the blades. To ensure discontinuous operation of the roller 91, it. East. provided means for automatically releasing the pous evening 93 of any pressure, apart from the moments corresponding to the repression of a tooth, as will now be explained.
The rear end of the swivel arm 107 carrying the pressure adjusting screw 106 carries a roller. 11.1. in contact with the interior surface \ of a cylindrical head 112 rotating with the shaft 21. This head 7.12 carries a sleeve or collar 113 keyed so as to be able to slide at 11 = 1 on it cylindrical sleeve 77 carrying the head 712 and to rotate with the latter. The inner surface of the head 112 has two surfaces 116 and 117 of different diameter and axially connected by an oblique surface 118.
When the collar l.13 and the head 112 which carries it are in a given axial position, the roller 111 comes into contact with the surface 116. An axial movement of the collar 11.3 towards the pulley 16 forces the roller 111 to roll towards outwardly along the oblique surface 118 to contact the surface 117 allowing the lever 107 to pivot outwardly under the action of the coil springs 102, all. by releasing the tool 91 from the pressure exerted on it.
A fairly strong coil spring 121. surrounds the sleeve 71 and exerts an axial force on the collar 11.3 through the intermediary of the head 112 to push it constantly towards the doll 16 and ensure the release of the lever 107 in which concerns the pressure exerted on him.
To push the collar 113 in the axial direction so as to be able to apply the necessary pressure on the lever 107 and consequently on the cutting tool 91, a control is provided connected to the drive of the rollers 31 and 32 to apply this pressure automatically when a determined length of wire has passed between the rollers, after which this pressure is released. This device (fig. 2 and 6) comprises a rotating cam 122 wedged on the shaft 34 of the lower roller 31 to control, by means of a roller 126, an oscillating arm 123 fixed on a transverse shaft 124 mounted. rotatably on the support 26 of the wire feed device 12.
This shaft 124 extends on either side of the body 26, and its end opposite the arm 123 carries a second oscillating arm 127 moving in synchronism with the oscillating arm 123 under the action of the displacement of the roller 126 caused. by the cam 122. The lower ends of the fork-shaped oscillating arms 123 and 127 are articulated to the ends of the key rods or connecting rods 131 by the intermediary of the key pins 132. The opposite ends of these connecting rods 131 are articulated at 133 at the lower end of a swing arm 134 mounted on a shaft 136 extending transversely through the tailstock 16.
Appropriate tensioning man elions 137 are fitted in front ï (y sement at the opposite ends of each connecting rod 131 to make it possible to adjust its useful length, as may be necessary. necessary or advantageous depending on the changes of the control cam 122, these changes to be made when it is desired to change the length of the teeth on the blades. The upper ends of the swing arms 134 are fork-shaped and in these forks are rotatably mounted through key pins 138; eyebolts 139.
The front ends of the latter are threaded and fixed in supports 141 which are themselves articulated at 142 on the diametrically opposed sides of an outer collar 146 which cannot rotate. This collar 146 is carried by the outer ring 148 of a ball bearing 147, the inner ring 149 of which rests on the inner collar 113 sliding axially. Collars 146 and 113 are capable of moving together in an axial direction, although they may rotate relatively relative to each other.
Since the shaft 21 rotates during the operation of the machine, driving the collar 113, the tool 91 and the auxiliary members, it is essential that the collar 113 can rotate relative to the collar 146.
The cam 122 rotates with the lower wire drive roller 31 and at the same speed since the two parts are mounted and keyed on the same shaft 34. The cam surface has a profile such that it periodically provides a pivoting movement of the oscillating arm 123 and, consequently, of the oscillating arm 127 which is integrally connected to it by the shaft 124, which causes the connecting rod 131 to advance from the rear and maintains it in the position thus reached while the roller 31 and the cam 122 turn integrally at a determined angle.
This movement of the connecting rods 131 causes the swing arms 134 to rotate about their axes 136 with their upper ends moving forward to push the tie neck 146 towards the working head 13. Since the rotating collar 113 is mounted in the shaft. outer collar 146 through the intermediary of the ball bearing 147, this forward movement of the outer collar 146 causes the inner collar to move while dragging with it its cylindrical head of larger diameter 112, this kind of training being moreover well known in itself. It is obvious that the force transmitted from the collar 146 to the collar 113 via the external surface 117 is sufficient to overcome the reaction of the spring 121.
The head 112 moves from an axial position for which the roller 111 on the arm 107 is in contact with the outer surface 117 to a position for which it comes into contact with the inner surface 116. This movement of the roller pushes the roller back. lever arm 107 inwardly with the plunger 93 and the tool 91 which is thus brought into its working position in which it remains as long as it. is located opposite the length of wire in which the tooth is to be formed, this length corresponding to a determined angle of rotation of the cam 122 integral with the roller 31.
When the cam 122 has rotated by an angle determined in advance, it releases any pressure from the cam follower 126 which was pushed back outwards previously; under the action of the coil spring 121, which tends at any time to push the collar 113 backwards, the members are returned to their previous position, and the cutting roller leaves its working position. The cam 122 enables the tool 91 to be released from the wire at determined intervals and then to return it to the engagement position. The result is that sections of wire are obtained on which the continuous tooth is. cut and qiii are separated from each other by toothless wire sections.
Thus, separate saw blades can be produced by subsequently cutting the wire.
When the machine is started up, the wire 100 is first brought between the grooved surfaces facing the rollers 31 and 32, it is then passed through the guide sleeve 82 and passed over the anvil 86 in front of the 'rotating tool 91 to finally exit through the hollow shaft 21 of the lathe. The operator then defines the characteristics of the helical teeth to be formed. If it is desired to form the approximately normal tooth with a pitch of 15 and the machine has previously operated for the production of a blade with such a tooth, it is not necessary to adjust the pitch. 'tool 91 and the plunger 93 which carries it relative to the support plate 96.
On the contrary, if it is desired to change this angle, the lever 107 must be withdrawn, which allows the plate 96 and the plunger 93 to be lifted, whereupon the angle of the tool relative to the plate. 96 defining the pitch of the tooth is set. This being done, the plate, the plunger and the tool are. brought back to their working position and. the lever arm 107 is returned to the relative position shown in FIGS. 4 and 7. The length of the teeth of the blade will be determined by the profile of the cam 122 rotating in synchronism with the lower roller 31.
Depending on the length desired for the blades, the raised part of the cam will be more or less long, and when it is desired to obtain different blade lengths, it suffices to remove a cam and replace it with another having one. the desired profile. The thread being in place, and the tool 91 properly adjusted, while the. machine is provided with the cam having the desired contour, the machine is ready to operate and it simply stays. to adjust the pressure on the upper drive roller 32, which is done by hand tightening the screw 16 up to. that the wire is securely held between the rollers.
In operation, the lathe shaft is dragged at normal speed by the mechanism controlling the lathe and. drives in rotation the working head 13 which includes. as has been said, the actual training device. tooth. The operation of the lathe also serves to effect rotation of the transmitting shaft 63. this rotation, by the gears and shafts described, to the lower roller 31 and to the cam 122. The wire advancing from the right, as shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and. : 1, is pushed by the rollers 31, 32 in the rotary sleeve 82 to slide there and come into the groove 88 of the anvil 86.
The wire does not rotate, but the anvil and tool 91 rotate around it while the tool 91 rotates around its own axis 92 to form the protruding spiral teeth. the normal surface of the wire, as shown in fig. 5. Note that the cantilever shoulder 89 which contacts the top surface of the wire prevents warping of the wire, which facilitates the formation of a steeply sloping tooth rear surface, as is usual. essential for forming a satisfactory sawtooth.
Indeed, if this rear surface of the tooth were not stiff, the saw blade obtained could not adequately ensure the removal of sawdust and this would produce a considerable release of heat due to the exaggerated local friction which occurs. would follow. It is obvious that the dimensions, spacing and profile of the teeth are. determined by the ratio between the feed speed of the wire, the speed of rotation of the tool 91 around the wire and the angle at which the tool is fixed. Any increase in the speed of the wire feed, the other factors remaining unchanged, would produce more protruding teeth. The change in orientation (tool 91 would have a similar effect while modifying the pitch of the teeth somewhat.
A change in the key rotational speed of the working key head likewise affects these factors.
The drive rotation of the rollers is accompanied, as has been described, by a rotation of the cam 122 which ensures, during the actual delivery work, the maintenance of the collar 146 in its advanced position for which it forces the arm. lever 107 to take its internal position, the roller 111. carried by the end of the lever is hole vant. in contact with the interior surface 116.
However, after a determined length of the saw blade has been formed, the cam allows. roller 126 to move back to the left of the fir. 1 and 2; following this backward movement, \ the holding pressure exerted by the transmission constituted by the connecting rods 131, the oscillating levers 1.34 and the support 141 no longer exists; at this time, under the action of the spring at.
coil 121, the inner collar 1130 carried by the shaft 21, slides to the left in fig. 1-, that is to say towards the doll 16, in such a way that the roller 111 moves outwards along the inclined surfaces 118 to come into contact with the surface 1.17 of the head 112. The . pressure exerted up to this moment on the tool 91. is eliminated, and the wire advances along the tool without any further contact with the latter than friction.
This continues for a period determined by the profile of the rotating cam 122 and gives an unworked length of wire capable of being cut in the middle to obtain the blade ends which can be given any suitable shape depending on the members. who should receive them.
From time to time, it may be necessary to replace the rotary tool 91, but given that it is. made of extremely hard steel, this is only necessary at fairly long intervals of time. Likewise, guide 81 et. the anvil 86 are made of extremely hard steel capable of withstanding abrasion caused by the moving wire. The operation of the machine continues without any supervision on the part of the operator who must simply ensure that the feed of the wire continues without interruption and whose only role, apart from that, is to start and stop. delete the workout.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 10 and 11, the recessed or grooved part 88a of the guide guide 82a forms a die allowing a kind of stamping for the formation of the helical tooth. Thus, when the cutting tool 91 rotates around the wire 100 and the latter is. pressed against it, the tailed material in the wire is pushed back by the tool so as to fill the recessed or milled part of the guide sleeve. In this variant, the end surface of the guide 82a has received by grinding the same inclination as the angle which is to be given to the wire by the cutting member.
The cutting element and the end of the guide are arranged as close to each other as is practically possible without actually being in contact, so that the cutting element can still rotate freely on the spindle 92 The surface 88a of the guide cooperates with the front surface of the cutting member to form a dihedron whose apex angle, which is really acute, ensures the formation of the tooth in the metal wire.
Consequently, the material constituting the wire which is pushed back by the tool is stopped by this device and stamped or deformed by entering the recessed or countersunk part of the guide of FIGS. 10 and 11, instead of being against the end of the sleeve which is separated from the tool in the case of the embodiment of the invention shown in FIGS. 1 to 9.
