【発明の詳細な説明】 【発明が属する技術分野】
本発明は、ネットワークに基づくビデオ録画システムに関し、特に、興味をも
った番組項目を特定するために、番組案内情報のクライアント側データベースを
検索するための方法と装置に関する。
【従来の技術】
テレビ視聴者が利用できる数多くの番組のオプションは、今や主要ネットワーク
、ケーブルチャンネル、衛星、有料テレビ、地域共同視聴テレビ等々から入手で
きるテレビ番組により、絶えず増加しつつある。テレビ番組の利用可能性がこの
ように増大する一方で、仕事、通勤時間、家庭での務めなどにより視聴者がテレ
ビを見る余暇時間量が減少している。これらの厳しい時間的制約ゆえに、かつて
ないほどテレビ娯楽を利用できるにもかかわらず、視聴者の間には、テレビを見
る時間があっても「何もしていない」という不満が広がっている。この不満は、
テレビ番組の質や利用しやすさよりも、人々のスケジュールとネットワークテレ
ビのスケジュールが一致しないと言う結果から、より多く発生している。ビデオ
カセットレコーダ等の録画装置により実現される、テレビ番組を自動的に、無人
で録画する能力は、ネットワークのスケジュール支配から視聴者を解放した。 しかしながら、視聴者は、興味が有る番組を特定するために、文字通り何百も
のテレビチャンネルのスケジュールを検討しなければならないという、依然とし
て時間のかかる雑用に直面している。この結果、視聴者が大量の番組情報に対処
するのを助けるために、電子番組案内が開発された。一般的に、このような案内
は、ケーブルテレビ環境と衛星テレビ環境において提供されている。番組情報は
、時間帯とチャンネルにより整理された、格子状フォーマットで提示される。案
内は、画面をスクロールすることにより表示される。しかしながら、これらの案
内は、対話型でない、すなわち、これらの案内は、検索することができないし、
視聴者は、全く情報の表示を制御することができない。視聴者は、何か役に立つ
か、面白いものが通り過ぎるの期待しながら、単に受動的に情報がスクロールす
るのを見ていなければならない。 最近では検索可能な番組案内を、利用することが可能になっている。例えば、
S．Schein, J．Leftwichは、「番組指標を用いて案内検索を行うための方法と装
置」という名称の米国特許No．6,133,909（2000年10月17日）において、視聴者
が、俳優または監督といった番組属性により検索することを可能にする、検索可
能な番組案内を記載している。Schein他により記載された案内は、視聴者が興味
をもった番組を探し出す作業を容易にする。残念なことに、この記載された方法
は、ユーザが俳優や監督といった索引化された属性によってしか案内を検索する
ことが出来ない。しかしながら、索引化された属性が、ユーザの検索行動を予想
できないことはよくある。このように、Schein他は、ユーザに、これらの索引化
された属性以外の検索方法は、なにも提供していない。 ここまでの記述により、一層フレキシブルな検索オプションを視聴者に与える
対話型番組案内が、技術を発展させる上で重要であることは、明らかである。
【発明が解決しようとする課題】
本発明は、対話型の、ネットワークに基づくビデオ録画システムにおいて、興
味をもった番組を特定するために、番組情報のデータベースを検索するための方
法と装置を提供する。視聴者は、リモートコントロールにより、視聴者インタフ
ェースに表示された仮想英数字キーパッドを用いて、検索事項を入力する。視聴

とにより検索を行うことができ、また、キーワード検索により、視聴者が番組内
容又は主題により検索することが可能となる。接頭辞一致機能は、先行入力機構
を有しているので、検索事項の先頭文字を一つ以上入力するのみで、検索事項を
適切な索引の中から即座に探し出すことが出来る。
【発明を実施するための形態】
対話型の、ネットワークに基づくビデオ録画システムの場合、検索可能な番組
案内により、視聴者が興味を持つ番組を特定する作業は容易になる。図1に示さ
れるように、クライアントユニット3の視聴者インタフェース1は、テキストボッ
クス、検索可能なリスト、選択バー、および英数字キーパッドといったインタフ
ェース要素が組み込まれた一連の対話型画面を有する。視聴者は、このインタフ
ェースを操作し、かつ通常はデータ信号5によりクライアントユニットと通信す
る手持ち式のリモートコントロール4によりシステムと対話する。好ましい実施
形態においては、データ信号は、赤外線搬送信号に組み込まれるが、無線データ
転送の当業者に公知の他の搬送信号も適切である。通常、インタフェースは、ク
ライアントユニットに接続されたテレビセット2の画面上に表示される。しかし
ながら、その他の表示手段も適切であろう。クライアントユニットは、定期的に
サーバ7に接続され6（ネットワーク接続を示す矢印は、接続の断続的性格を示す
ために破線になっている）、その時間中に配信元から発せられる最新の番組情報
が、クライアントユニットにダウンロードされる。ダウンロード後、番組情報は
、ディスクドライブのような固定記憶媒体に常駐するデータベースアプリケーシ
ョンにインポートされる。本発明のこの実施形態は、オブジェクト指向のデータ
ベースアプリケーションを採用しているが、リレーショナルデータベースのよう
な他のタイプのデータベースも適切であろう。 図2には、検索インタフェースの最重要画面20が示されている。選択バー21は
、利用可能な様々な検索オプションを強調表示している。第一のオプション22は
、視聴者が番組タイトルにより番組案内を検索することを可能にする。第二のオ
プション23は、ユーザが、俳優名、監督名、カテゴリおよびキーワードにより検
索プロファイルを作成することを可能にする。さらに、他の検索オプションも可
能である。例えば、拡大検索機能は、公開年、言語、振付師、または索引化可能
な他のいかなる番組属性の索引をも含み得る。ナビゲーション矢印24は、視聴者
に利用可能な操作オプションを知らせる。例えば、図2では、「右」矢印24aは、
タイトルにより検索を行うための画面（図3）に視聴者を誘導し、「下」矢印24b
は、視聴者が与えられたオプションのリストをスクロールすることを可能にし、
そして「左」矢印24cは、視聴者が前画面に戻るよう誘導する。もし選択バーが
オプションのリストの中でずっと下方に位置する場合、「上」矢印（示されてい
ない）は、視聴者がリストを上にスクロールすることを可能にする。「上」、「
下」、「右」、および「左」の矢印は、手持ち式のリモートコントロール4上の
対応するボタンを押すことにより操作される。図2の例においては、視聴者は、
「タイトルによる検索」22を選択している。 図3には、番組のカテゴリに従って、または視聴者の必要性又は要求により、
タイトル検索を絞り込むオプションを視聴者に与える画面30が、示されている。
「全番組」のオプションを選択することにより、検索は、全番組データベースの
中で実行される。カテゴリ32を選択することにより、検索は、対応するカテゴリ
記述子により定義された番組に限定される。カテゴリにより検索を限定すること
は、視聴者が特定のタイプの番組を求めてブラウズするときに最も有効である。
もし視聴者が、検索を最大化することを求めている場合、すなわち、視聴者がタ
イトルの一部しか知らない特定の番組を検索している場合は、番組カテゴリによ
り限定することは、あまり有効ではないであろう。 カテゴリを選んだ後、ユーザは、図4に示されるスクリーンに誘導される。こ
こには、仮想英数字キーパッド41およびテキストボックス44を表示する画面40が
、示されている。視聴者は、リモートコントロール上のナビゲーションコントロ
ール（図示されていない）を用い、選択した文字の周囲に選択マーキ48を合わせ
る。選択マーキが、要求された文字に正しく合うと、視聴者は、「選択」ボタン
を押し、それにより選択された文字が、テキストボックス44に現われる。視聴者
は、テキストボックスに番組タイトルの少なくとも一部が入力されるまで、文字
の選択を続ける。「クリア」45、「スペース」46および「削除」47は、それぞれ
ボックスのクリア、語の間へのスペース挿入および一文字削除のために設けられ
ている。接頭辞一致は、画面に先行入力機能を与える。従って、視聴者が文字を
入力すると、タイトルリスト42は、視聴者により入力された文字列に一致する接
頭辞をもつ番組項目に自動的にスクロールされる。前述したように、方向指示矢
印24a〜dは、視聴者に彼らが利用できるナビゲーションオプションを知らせる。
図4に示されているように、選択マーキは、キーパッド41の最右列にある文字「T
」に合っている。この場合、それが右に誘導されると、処理対象は、キーパッド
からタイトルリスト42に移動することになろう。「上」と「下」の矢印43aと43b
は、視聴者がタイトルリストを上下にスクロールできることを示している。 上述したように、視聴者は、索引化された番組属性またはキーワードにより検
索を行う検索プロファイルをつくることができる。番組属性には、俳優名、監督
名、カテゴリ、振付師、言語、公開年等が含まれる。図5は、俳優名による検索
のための画面50を示している。留意すべき点は、索引化された属性又はキーワー
ドにより検索するには、検索プロファイルの作成が必要であるという点である。
検索プロファイルが作成されると、それは名前をつけて保存される。検索画面50
との対話は、タイトル入力画面に対して前述した対話と類似しているので、これ
以上説明することはしない。図6に示されるように、俳優名の入力に続けて、画
面60は、必要に応じて、ユーザがカテゴリにより検索を絞り込むことを可能にす
る。もう一組の画面（図示されていない）は、監督名による検索のためのもので
ある。これらの画面の様子と機能は、俳優名による検索のものと類似しているの
で、これ以上説明することはしない。 図7と図8は、それぞれ、キーワードに従った検索およびカテゴリに従った絞り
込みのための画面70および画面80を示している。前述したように、キーワード検
索は、検索プロファイルの作成を必要とする。以下に説明するように、キーワー
ドは、俳優名、監督名、タイトルおよび番組解説から抽出される。 キーワード検索機能は、通常の番組案内にはみられない重要な追加的アクセス
ポイントを有する点で、非常に有利である。ユーザの検索行動を、完全な確実性
をもって予想することが不可能であるということは、不特定多数者からのアクセ
スが可能な情報検索システムを設計する当業者には、周知の問題である。従って
、情報ベースがいかに効率的に索引化されても、全てのユーザの情報探索行動に
対応することはできないであろう。それゆえ、顧客に最大限の利便性をもたらす
システムを提供するために、できる限り様々なアクセスポイントを提供すること
が強く望まれる。キーワード検索機能を含ませることにより、この発明は、索引
化された属性以外に番組内容および主題にアクセスする、重要で、非常にフレキ
シブルな方法を提供する。 キーワード検索画面と対話する方法は、前述の画面と全く同じである。従って
、これについては、さらに説明することはしない。 索引化 前述のとおり、本発明のビデオ録画システムは、ネットワークに基づき、中央
サーバと複数個のクライアントユニットからなり、各クライアントは、サーバと
定期的に交信する。本発明の好ましい実施形態においては、ネットワーク接続は
、一般に利用可能な電話回線網を介するダイヤルアップ接続である。しかしなが
ら、他のネットワーク接続、例えば、無線接続も、同様に適切であろう。本発明
の好ましい実施形態においては、クライアントは、一日を基準とした短い周期で
サーバと通信する。毎日の接続時間中に、クライアントは、最新の番組案内デー
タをダウンロードする。ダウンロードされた番組情報は、クライアントに常駐す
るオブジェクト指向型データベースにインポートされる。先に指摘したように、
視聴者が、興味を持つ番組を見出すようにデータベースを検索するとき、視聴者
は、番組名により、俳優名または監督名といった索引化された属性により、およ
びキーワードにより検索を行うことができる。データベースオブジェクト内のレ
コードの直接的、順次検索は、極めて時間がかかり、システムリソースを浪費す
るので、番組案内の使い勝手に好ましくない影響を与える。このため、データベ
ースは、索引化され、かつ検索が、与えられた索引ファイルに基づいて実行され
、これにより検索効率がはるかに改善される。 データベースは、他のオブジェクトを含むが、タイトル検索機能は、主として
「シリーズ」のオブジェクトに関係する。属性検索およびキーワード検索機能は
、主に「番組」のオブジェクトに関係する。「シリーズ」のオブジェクトは、各
テレビシリーズのレコードを含む。タイトル検索にとって、「シリーズ」のオブ
ジェクトの最も重要なフィールドは、シリーズの「タイトル」フィールドである
。属性検索およびキーワード検索は、主に「番組」のオブジェクトに関係してい
る。「番組」のオブジェクトは、各個別の番組項目のレコードを含んでおり、例
えば、そのレコードにおいては、個々の番組項目は、シリーズの中の一話であろ
う。「番組」のオブジェクトは、少なくとも以下のフィールドを含む。 ・ タイトル、 ・ 一話のタイトル、 ・ 解説、 ・ 俳優、 ・ 主役、 ・ ゲストスター、および ・ 監督 上記のリストは、本発明を限定するものではない。本発明の精神と範囲に一致

後に、キーワード検索に対し、「キーワード」索引および「タイトル語彙」索引
が与えられる。 一般的に、データベースを索引化するプロセスには、下記のステップが含まれ
る。 ・ データベースレコードから索引項目を抽出すること、 ・ 抽出された索引項目から中間ファイルを構成すること、 ・ 中間ファイルから未加工の、ソートされていない索引ファイルを作成する こと、 ・ 未加工の索引ファイルをソートすること、および ・ 最終的な索引ファイルを形成するために、ソートされたファイルを圧縮す ること 索引化プロセスのそれぞれのステップを、以下により詳細に説明する。 「タイトル」索引については、シリーズ全体のタイトルが、各「シリーズ」の
レコードの「タイトル」フィールドから文字列として抽出され、同時に各文字列
は、別の索引項目、つまりキーの構成要素となる。 「俳優」索引については、各名前は、「番組」レコードの「俳優」、「主役」
および「ゲストスター」フィールドから抽出され、同時に各レコードからの各名
前は、別の俳優キーの構成要素となる。同様に、「監督」索引については、各名
前が、「監督」フィールドから抽出される。ここで、各レコードからの各名前は
、別の監督キーの構成要素となる。 「タイトル語彙」索引については、少なくとも二文字の長さを持つ、「タイト

ァイルに集められる。「タイトル」の中間ファイルは、「タイトル」キーを含み

を含み、そして「監督」の中間ファイルは、「監督」キーを含み、同時に「俳優
」および「監督」キー中の名は、ディレクトリ形式でリストアップされる。姓と
名は、コンマにより分けられる。「タイトル語彙」ファイルは、「番組」のオブ
ジェクトの「タイトル」および「一話」フィールドから抽出されたタイトル語彙
を含む。「キーワード」ファイルは、しかしながら、これまでの中間ファイルと
は異なって構成される。各キーワードは、「キーワード」ファイルへの独立した

の識別名で、トリビューンメディアサービスTRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICEのような商
業的な番組案内業者により割り当てられた番組識別名とは区別される。未加工索
引ファイルは、制限テキストファイルの形態をとる。しかしながら、テーブルの
ような他のデータ構造も、同様に適合するであろう。本発明の好ましい実施形態
においては、ファイルは、下記のようにフォーマットされる： <KEY> <TAB> <PROG ID> ． ． ． ． ． <KEY> <TAB> <PROG ID> さらに以下に説明されるように、索引検索のためにバイナリ検索アルゴリズム

番組識別名のリストである。 検索アルゴリズム バイナリ検索アルゴリズムを採用する検索エンジンが、様々な索引を検索する
ために用いられる。一般的に、バイナリアルゴリズムは、全検索空間をカバーす
るインタバルで開始される。検索空間は、どれだけ検索値が中間要素に近づいて
いるかにより、繰り返し二分の一に分割される。もし検索値が、インタバルの中
間の項目よりも少なければ、インタバルは、より低い半分に絞り込まれ、そうで
ない場合には、他の半分に絞り込まれる。この演算は、検索値が見出されるか、
インタバルが空になるまで繰り返される。 上述したように、キーワード検索は、タイトル語彙を含む。それゆえ、キーワ
ード検索中は、「キーワード」索引と「タイトル語彙」索引の両方のバイナリ検
索が実行される。 本発明は、一定の好ましい実施形態に関して説明されてきたが、当業者は、本
発明の精神と範囲から逸脱することなく、他の応用例を代用し得ることを容易に
理解するであろう。従って、本発明は、前記特許請求の範囲に含まれる請求項に
よってのみ限定されるべきである。

    ドするクライアントと、 当該クライアントに常駐する、当該番組情報が当該データベースにインポート
    される番組案内データベースと、 当該クライアントとの交信時に表示手段に表示される対話型視聴者インタフェ
    ースと、 当該視聴者が当該視聴者インタフェースと対話する手段と、 番組タイトルにより当該データベースを検索する手段と、 索引化された番組属性により当該データベースを検索する手段と、 キーワードにより当該データベースを検索する手段と、 を有するシステム。
