- FIG. 8 is a diagram showing a configuration of a comparative example to the second embodiment.
- FIG. 9 is a diagram showing experimental results of the second embodiment and a comparative example.
- FIG. 10 is a diagram showing experimental results of a modified example of the second embodiment and a comparative example.
- the carbon dioxide reduction device is a device that uses light energy to carry out an oxidation-reduction reaction, and generates carbon monoxide, formic acid, methane, and the like, which can be used as an energy resource, by causing a reduction reaction of gaseous carbon dioxide at a reduction electrode.
- FIG. 1 is a diagram showing an example of the configuration of a carbon dioxide reduction device according to the first embodiment.
- the carbon dioxide reduction device 100 according to the first embodiment is a carbon dioxide reduction device that reduces gaseous carbon dioxide, and includes an oxidation electrode 1, an oxidation tank 2, a reduction electrode 3, a reduction tank 4, an electrolyte membrane 5, an electrolyte solution 6, and an ultrasonic generator 7.
- the oxidation electrode 1 is inserted into the electrolyte 6 in the oxidation tank 2.
- the oxidation electrode 1 is made of a semiconductor and receives light from the outside.
- the oxidation electrode 1 is formed, for example, by forming a film of a nitride semiconductor, titanium oxide, and amorphous silicon on a sapphire substrate having a certain area.
- the oxidation electrode 1 may also be formed by forming a film of a compound that exhibits photoactivity or redox activity, such as a ruthenium complex or a rhenium complex.
- the oxidation tank 2 holds the electrolyte 6.
- the reduction electrode 3 is placed in the reduction tank 4 and is connected to the oxidation electrode 1 via a conductor.
- the reduction electrode 3 is, for example, copper, platinum, gold, silver, indium, palladium, gallium, nickel, tin, or cadmium.
- the reduction electrode 3 may be a porous body of an alloy of these.
- the reduction electrode 3 may be a compound such as silver oxide, copper oxide, copper (II) oxide, nickel oxide, indium oxide, tin oxide, tungsten oxide, tungsten (VI) oxide, or copper oxide.
- the reduction electrode 3 may be a porous metal complex having a metal ion and an anionic ligand.
- the reduction electrode 3 has a certain area, similar to the oxidation electrode 1.
- the reduction tank 4 has a reduction electrode 3 installed on the wall facing the oxidation tank 2, and is equipped with piping for supplying gaseous carbon dioxide from the outside.
- the electrolyte membrane 5 is disposed between the oxidation cell 2 and the reduction cell 4.
- the electrolyte membrane 5 is in contact with the electrolytic solution 6 on the oxidation cell 2 side, and is joined to the reduction electrode 3 on the reduction cell 4 side.
- the electrolyte membrane 5 is, for example, Nafion (registered trademark), Forblue, or Aquivion, which are electrolyte membranes having a carbon-fluorine skeleton.
- the electrolyte membrane 5 may also be Selemion or Neocepta, which are electrolyte membranes having a hydrocarbon skeleton.
- the reduction electrode 3 and electrolyte membrane 5 may be made of existing materials that are integrally formed.
- a commercially available GDE (registered trademark) gas diffusion electrode can be used as the reduction electrode 3 and electrolyte membrane 5.
- the GDE gas diffusion electrode is an electrode made of a porous material and a catalyst, which can separate liquid and gas and allows positive ions to move within the electrode.
- the electrolyte 6 is, for example, an aqueous solution of potassium bicarbonate, an aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate, an aqueous solution of potassium chloride, an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide, an aqueous solution of rubidium hydroxide, or an aqueous solution of cesium hydroxide.
- the ultrasonic generator 7 is installed in the oxidation tank 2 and irradiates ultrasonic waves toward the electrolyte membrane 5. That is, the ultrasonic generator 7 is installed in the oxidation tank 2 so as to irradiate ultrasonic waves toward the electrolyte membrane 5 using the electrolyte solution 6 as a medium. By irradiating ultrasonic waves toward the electrolyte membrane 5, vibration energy is imparted to the liquid exuded on the surface of the reduction electrode 3 as the reduction reaction of carbon dioxide progresses, and the liquid can be atomized.
- a piezoelectric element is used for the ultrasonic generator 7.
- An ultrasonic probe may also be used. Note that the ultrasonic generator 7 is an example, and any sound wave generator capable of generating sound waves may be used.
- the light energy source may be, for example, sunlight, a simulated solar light source, a xenon lamp, a halogen lamp, or a mercury lamp.

- a reduction reaction of carbon dioxide occurs at the reduction electrode 3 with protons, electrons, and gas-phase carbon dioxide that is directly supplied to the reduction electrode 3.
- This oxidation-reduction reaction produces carbon monoxide, formic acid, methane, and other energy resources that can be used.
- a strong alkaline aqueous solution e.g., a 1.0 mol/L aqueous sodium hydroxide solution
- the electrolyte membrane 5 swells, and the electrolyte 6 passes through the pores of the electrolyte membrane 5 and seeps out onto the surface of the reduction electrode 3.
