Definitions
- a lashing bridge is a support framework to be installed on the deck of a cargo ship intended for transporting containers, to which framework lashing bars to be used for supporting the containers are fixed.
- Lashing bridges are typically disposed in the transverse direction of the hull of the ship, extending from one side of the ship to the other. Since the lashing bridges are narrow and high in structure, the vibration of the hull caused by the running of the engine of the ship and by the rotation of the propeller might cause strength problems and vibration problems in the structures of lashing bridges. As a result of a vibration damper, detrimental vibration of a lashing bridge can be damped, and the structures of the lashing bridge can be made to be more lightweight. Vibration dampers that are known in the art are separately installable support structures or damping structures, which are connected to a lashing bridge and also to e.g . a hatch cover. At the same time they obstruct or impede the transportation of containers.
- Fig. 1 presents a lashing bridge and a stack of containers, with two lashing bars connected.
- Fig. 2 presents a lashing bridge and a stack of containers, as viewed from the side, in a situation in which a vibration damper has been connected to the lashing bridge.
- Fig. 4 presents schematic diagram of the functional components of a vibration damper.
- Lashing bridges 1 are disposed on the weather deck of a cargo ship typically in the transverse direction of the ship, and the containers/container stacks 7 are disposed between the lashing bridges in such a way that the lashing bars 8 of the containers can be fixed between the containers and the lashing bridge.
- Figs. 2 and 3 present vibration dampers 2 fastened to a lashing bridge.
- a vibration damper 2 is typically fastened to the top part of a lashing bridge, but other locations are possible.
- the lashing bridge 1 vibrates at its natural frequency as an effect of the excitation vibration coming from the structures of the ship, the mass of the vibration damper 2 starts to vibrate in different phases, in which case the vibration of the lashing bridge 1 is not able to grow to be detrimentally large in its speed and amplitude.
- Fig. 4 presents in more detail one way of implementing a vibration damper according to the invention.
- the mass element 3 in a vibration damper 2 can be e.g . 100-1000 kg in size, depending on, inter alia, the vibration properties of the lashing bridge 1.
- the flexible element 5 can be linear in its function, in which case the spring force is determined as a function of the compression (deformation) of the spring (e.g. a helical spring) - or the flexible element can be non-linear in its function, in which case e.g. the speed of compression (deformation) of the spring affects the magnitude of the spring force.
- the damping element 4 can be e.g. a liquid-filled or gas-filled shock absorber. Also the friction between vibrating (moving) and stationary structures can function as a damping factor.
