Description
本発明は、携帯端末、その制御方法及びプログラムに関し、特に、2つの画面表示装置を搭載し、バッテリ駆動する携帯端末の使用可能時間を長時間化する技術に関する。
携帯型の情報端末(以下、「携帯端末」と呼ぶ)の技術分野においては、端末サイズの小型化というニーズがある一方で、情報表示エリアの拡大というニーズもある。一見両立が難しい2つのニーズであるが、例えば、2つの筐体にそれぞれ画面を搭載することによって情報表示エリアの拡大を実現し、ヒンジ機構によりこの2画面を見開き及び折りたたみ可能にすることにより小型化を実現することができる。そのような携帯端末の外観例を図1に図示する。また、同様な外観を持つ携帯端末が開示された先行例として、特許文献1を挙げる。
2画面の携帯端末に限らず、携帯端末のバッテリ稼働時間は商品性やユーザビリティの生命線の一つであることはよく知られている。そして、バッテリ消費は、画面表示装置(LCD:Liquid Crystal Displayや有機ELディスプレイなど)の消費電力にも大きく依存する場合がある。このような観点からなされた発明としては、例えば特許文献2がある。特許文献2には、バッテリを電源として表示パネルを駆動する電子機器において、表示パネルの輝度等をバッテリ残量に基づいて制御することが開示されている。
しかしながら、2つの画面表示装置を有する携帯端末において、利用シーンやバッテリ残量などに応じて2つの画面の表示携帯や画面輝度などを制御することにより、バッテリ消費を抑制することについては具体的な記載がない。
2つの画面表示装置を搭載する携帯端末は、画面表示装置の性能や表示面積が同等であれば、当然ながら1つの画面表示装置を搭載する携帯端末に比べ、画面表示装置が消費する電力は単純に2倍になる訳であり、バッテリ駆動時間への影響も大きい。これに対してバッテリ容量を増大させて対応することも考えられるが、端末重量や外形サイズに及ぼす影響を鑑みると、商品性が損なわれる点が問題である。
本発明は、上記実情に鑑みてなされたものであって、2つの画面表示装置を搭載し、バッテリ駆動する携帯端末において、使用可能時間を長時間化すると同時にユーザビリティを向上した携帯端末、その制御方法及びプログラムを提供することを目的とする。
上記目的を達成するために本発明は、第1の態様として、2つのディスプレイを有する携帯端末であって、バッテリ残量が所定の残量以下になった場合に、前記2つのディスプレイのいずれか1つを消灯し、消灯したディスプレイの表示画面を消灯しないディスプレイの表示画面と合わせて集約表示する制御を行う表示制御手段を有することを特徴とする、携帯端末を提供するものである。
また、上記目的を達成するために本発明は、第2の態様として、2つのディスプレイを有する携帯端末の制御方法であって、バッテリ残量が所定の残量以下になった場合に、前記2つのディスプレイのいずれか1つを消灯する処理と、消灯したディスプレイの表示画面を消灯しないディスプレイの表示画面と合わせて集約表示する処理と、を含むことを特徴とする、携帯端末の制御方法を提供するものである。
また、上記目的を達成するために本発明は、第3の態様として、2つのディスプレイを有する携帯端末の制御プログラムであって、前記携帯端末に、バッテリ残量が所定の残量以下になった場合に、前記2つのディスプレイのいずれか1つを消灯する処理と、消灯したディスプレイの表示画面を消灯しないディスプレイの表示画面と合わせて集約表示する処理と、を実行させることを特徴とする、制御プログラムを提供するものである。
本発明によれば、2つの画面表示装置を搭載し、バッテリ駆動する携帯端末において、使用可能時間を長時間化すると同時にユーザビリティを向上した携帯端末、その制御方法及びプログラムを提供することが可能となる。

ダイアローグは、各表示画面のフォアグランドに、押せばそのディスプレイが消灯する消灯ボタンを配置するようなものでもよい。
図5に、このようなダイアローグが表示された画面表示例を示す。
図5においては、各表示画面のフォアグランドに、消灯ボタン131がそれぞれ配置されている。ユーザがスタイラスペン130を用いて消灯ボタン131をポイントすることにより、消灯ボタン131がポイントされた側のディスプレイが消灯する。
図5に、このようなダイアローグが表示された画面表示例を示す。
図5においては、各表示画面のフォアグランドに、消灯ボタン131がそれぞれ配置されている。ユーザがスタイラスペン130を用いて消灯ボタン131をポイントすることにより、消灯ボタン131がポイントされた側のディスプレイが消灯する。
図3において、表示制御部101は、入力制御部104から消灯ボタン131がポイントされた側のディスプレイの情報を受け取り、当該ディスプレイを消灯する(ステップS103)。なお、一定時間ユーザによる消灯ボタン131のポイントが検知されない場合は、デフォルトで例えば右ディスプレイ121を消灯するように構成してもよい。
次に、表示制御部101は、残る片側のディスプレイに、画面表示を集約して表示する処理を行う(ステップS104)。画面表示の集約の態様は、第1に、画面表示の縦横比を保ったまま上下又は左右に並べて表示する、第2に、画面を上下に2分割し、縦横比を崩して上下に並べて表示する、第3に、消灯しないディスプレイの画面表示をそのままにフロートウィンドウを形成し、当該フロートウィンドウに消灯したディスプレイの画面表示を行う、など、種々の態様を用いることができる。また、第4の集約の態様として、いずれかの画面に何もアプリケーションウィンドウが表示されていない状態(デスクトップ画面が表示されている状態)の画面がある場合には、当該画面を消灯するように構成してもよい。
上記第1の集約の態様は、集約前に比べて表示が小さくなるものの縦横比が変わらないというメリットがある。第2の集約の態様は、表示が可能な領域を最大限利用することができ、効率的であるというメリットがある。第3の集約の態様は、消灯した側のディスプレイの画面表示が小さくなるものの集約前と画面表示が大きく変わらないというメリットがある。
図6に、左ディスプレイ111の表示を消灯せずに残し、左ディスプレイ111の画面を上下に2分割し、2つの画面表示を上下に並べて表示する画面表示例を示す。図示のように、右ディスプレイ121は、消灯ボタン131が押され、消灯している。
以上で、本実施形態におけるバッテリ103の残量を考慮した省エネ画面表示制御の手順の説明を終える。
本実施形態によれば、二画面携帯端末において、バッテリ残量に応じて片側を消灯することで、端末を全く利用できなくなるまでの時間を長時間化させることができる。その一方で、消灯の際に画面表示を集約することで、両画面の画面表示は継続して見ることができ、消灯によって損なわれる不便さをある程度吸収することができる。したがって、本実施形態によれば、ユーザビリティが向上する。
また、本実施形態によれば、図5に示したように、2つのディスプレイのいずれか1つを消灯する前に、各ディスプレイの表示画面上に、消灯するディスプレイをユーザに選ばせるダイアローグを表示する。このため、端末側の一方的な判断で消灯するディスプレイが選ばれるのではなく、ユーザが任意のディスプレイを消灯することを選択できるので、ユーザのニーズに適切に対応することができる。
本実施形態は、上記説明例に限定されず、種々の変形実施が可能である。例えば、図3のフローチャートにおける消灯処理(ステップS103)と集約処理(ステップS104)は、入れ替えて実施しても差し支えない。
他に、本実施形態による消灯処理と集約処理を実行した後に、さらにバッテリ残量がある所定の残量以下になると、消灯していないディスプレイをモノクロ化してもよい。この場合、端末を全く利用できなくなるまでの時間をさらに長時間化させることができる。とりわけ、各ディスプレイのデバイスに有機ELを採用する場合、デバイス自体が発光するため、カラーよりもモノクロの方が消費電力を低減することができ、長時間化の効果が顕著である。
なお、上記モノクロ化と一画面化の順序は、逆でもよい。また、モノクロ化と一画面化に加えて、輝度制御を実行してもよい。バッテリ残量がある所定の残量以下になると、表示制御部101が、左ディスプレイ111及び/又は右ディスプレイ121の輝度を落とす制御を実行する。輝度を落とすことにより消費電力は低減し、利用時間の長時間化にさらに貢献する。
また、他に、本実施形態による省エネ表示モードへ移行する旨の通知処理(図3のステップS102)の際に、単に消灯ボタン131を表示することに替えて、ユーザに対し「あと何時間端末を使用するか」を問いかけるダイアローグを表示してもよい。つまり、ユーザに対し、おおよその希望利用時間を問いかけるダイアローグである。このダイアローグに対するユーザの回答(使用時間)とバッテリ残量による稼働可能時間を、制御部100が計算し、計算結果に基づいて表示制御部101による一画面化/モノクロ化/輝度制御を実行する。この構成によれば、ユーザのニーズに適切に対応した表示制御可能になる。
なお、この出願は、2010年9月15日に出願した、日本特許出願番号特願2010-207005号を基礎とする優先権を主張し、その開示の全てをここに取り込む。

Claims (6)
- 2つのディスプレイを有する携帯端末であって、
バッテリ残量が所定の残量以下になった場合に、前記2つのディスプレイのいずれか1つを消灯し、消灯したディスプレイの表示画面を消灯しないディスプレイの表示画面と合わせて集約表示する制御を行う表示制御手段を有することを特徴とする、携帯端末。 - 前記表示制御手段は、前記2つのディスプレイのいずれか1つを消灯する前に、各ディスプレイの表示画面上に、消灯するディスプレイをユーザに選ばせるダイアローグを表示する制御を行うことを特徴とする、請求項1記載の携帯端末。
- 前記表示制御手段は、前記2つのディスプレイのいずれか1つを消灯する前に、ユーザが端末を利用したい時間を問いかけるダイアローグを表示し、該ダイアローグの回答に応じて表示制御を行うことを特徴とする、請求項1又は2記載の携帯端末。
- 前記集約表示は、前記消灯しないディスプレイの画面を2分割して前記2つのディスプレイの表示画面を並べて表示するものであることを特徴とする、請求項1から3のいずれか1項記載の携帯端末。
- 2つのディスプレイを有する携帯端末の制御方法であって、
バッテリ残量が所定の残量以下になった場合に、前記2つのディスプレイのいずれか1つを消灯する処理と、
消灯したディスプレイの表示画面を消灯しないディスプレイの表示画面と合わせて集約表示する処理と、
を含むことを特徴とする、携帯端末の制御方法。 - 2つのディスプレイを有する携帯端末の制御プログラムであって、
前記携帯端末に、
バッテリ残量が所定の残量以下になった場合に、前記2つのディスプレイのいずれか1つを消灯する処理と、
消灯したディスプレイの表示画面を消灯しないディスプレイの表示画面と合わせて集約表示する処理と、
を実行させることを特徴とする、制御プログラム。
