Definitions

  • insects including mosquitoes in particular, are controlled not only because of their unpleasant properties, but also because they can be carriers of a large number of parasitic, bacterial and viral pathogens.
  • the best known case of transmission by pathogens through mosquitoes is sleeping sickness from the Anopheles mosquito.
  • a large number of methods are known in the prior art for controlling such insects.
  • the adult insects as such as well as their brood or the eggs can be controlled by suitable measures. It is of course advantageous to control the insects as early and completely as possible.
  • Many mosquitoes lay their eggs in water. Larvae develop there that leave the water as a fully developed mosquito after a certain period of the larval stage.
  • US 4,160,033 proposes the use of specific water-insoluble surfactants with a high surface tension, since these, applied to the water surface, prevent the eggs from being deposited by the mosquito as well as the developing insect larvae take away the air contact they need to survive.
  • the surfactants according to US Pat. No. 4,160,033 form a quasi monomolecular film on the water surface, which the animals cannot easily penetrate.
  • the advantage of such processes is that, on the one hand, the mosquitoes are effectively disrupted during egg laying or during the development of the larvae, on the other hand, only very small amounts of the film-forming agent are necessary to achieve the desired effect.
  • the present invention therefore relates to a method for controlling insects which lay their eggs in water, with a water which is suitable for laying insect eggs being applied at the same time or with a time lag: a) a non-water-soluble oil which is concentrated on the water surface forms a thin film and b) a pheromone which is suitable for causing the female insect to lay the eggs.
  • the oils are preferably nonionic surfactants, which are described in detail, for example, in US Pat. No. 4,160,033. It is particularly advantageous to select surfactants from the group of the reaction products of linear, branched, saturated or unsaturated fatty alcohols with 6-24 carbon atoms, with 1-10 alkoxide per mole of fatty alcohol. Surfactants based on reaction products of linear saturated fatty alcohols with 12-18 C atoms, each with 1-10 mol alkoxide per mol fatty alcohol, are particularly preferred.
  • shallow alkoxylated fatty alcohols which have been reacted with 1-5, preferably 1-3 and in particular with 1-2 mol of alkoxide per mol of fatty alcohol.
  • propylene oxide and / or butylene oxide are also suitable as suitable alkoxylation reagents.
  • the production of the particularly preferred reaction products of fatty alcohol with alkoxides obeys the technical teaching of US Pat. No. 5,907,067. In principle, however, others are already in technology Known processes for the preparation of such alkoxides are suitable for producing these products.

  • Culex quinquefasciatus such a pheromone is described, for example, in Japanese laid-open patent publication JP 85-205847. It is the 6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolite, which according to Journal of Agricultural food chemistry, vol. 47, p. 3411 is suitable to stimulate mosquitoes of the genus Culex quinquefasciatus to lay eggs on water.

  • components a) and b) are preferably selected from the group of mineral oil, diesel oil, petroleum, kerosene, petroleum ether and / or gasoline.
  • surfactants and other oils are also preferred.
  • the advantage of using surfactants of the type described above as component a) is their biodegradability and, at the same time, low toxicity.
  • Another object of the present invention relates to the use of a combination of a nonionic surfactant, which forms a thin film on the water surface and b) a pheromone, which is suitable to induce the female mosquito to lay eggs to fight insects that have their eggs in Put off water.
