Description
The present invention relates to a method for controlling insects which lay their eggs in water. Another object of the present invention relates to the use of a combination of a film-forming agent with a pheromone for controlling insects.
Many insects, including mosquitoes in particular, are controlled not only because of their unpleasant properties, but also because they can be carriers of a large number of parasitic, bacterial and viral pathogens. The best known case of transmission by pathogens through mosquitoes is sleeping sickness from the Anopheles mosquito. A large number of methods are known in the prior art for controlling such insects. The adult insects as such as well as their brood or the eggs can be controlled by suitable measures. It is of course advantageous to control the insects as early and completely as possible. Many mosquitoes lay their eggs in water. Larvae develop there that leave the water as a fully developed mosquito after a certain period of the larval stage. In order to successfully prevent the mosquitoes from laying eggs in this case, US 4,160,033 proposes the use of specific water-insoluble surfactants with a high surface tension, since these, applied to the water surface, prevent the eggs from being deposited by the mosquito as well as the developing insect larvae take away the air contact they need to survive. The surfactants according to US Pat. No. 4,160,033 form a quasi monomolecular film on the water surface, which the animals cannot easily penetrate. The advantage of such processes is that, on the one hand, the mosquitoes are effectively disrupted during egg laying or during the development of the larvae, on the other hand, only very small amounts of the film-forming agent are necessary to achieve the desired effect. Thus, there is only a relatively low environmental impact from the use of such agents. A disadvantage of these methods, however, is that it is not easy to predict which waters the Female mosquitoes will lay their eggs. It is therefore necessary to treat comparatively large areas with such agents in order to ensure that extensive control of the insects or mosquitoes can take place. It was now the object of the present invention to improve the method described in US Pat. No. 4,160,033 in such a way that its efficiency can be increased.
The present invention therefore relates to a method for controlling insects which lay their eggs in water, with a water which is suitable for laying insect eggs being applied at the same time or with a time lag: a) a non-water-soluble oil which is concentrated on the water surface forms a thin film and b) a pheromone which is suitable for causing the female insect to lay the eggs.
By combining the film-forming water-insoluble oil with a pheromone attracting the female insect, a significant increase in the efficiency of the proposed method can be achieved compared to the method known from the prior art. The oils are preferably nonionic surfactants, which are described in detail, for example, in US Pat. No. 4,160,033. It is particularly advantageous to select surfactants from the group of the reaction products of linear, branched, saturated or unsaturated fatty alcohols with 6-24 carbon atoms, with 1-10 alkoxide per mole of fatty alcohol. Surfactants based on reaction products of linear saturated fatty alcohols with 12-18 C atoms, each with 1-10 mol alkoxide per mol fatty alcohol, are particularly preferred. It is further preferred to use shallow alkoxylated fatty alcohols which have been reacted with 1-5, preferably 1-3 and in particular with 1-2 mol of alkoxide per mol of fatty alcohol. Reaction products of stearyl alcohol with 2 mol alkoxide, preferably ethylene oxide, are particularly preferred. In principle, however, propylene oxide and / or butylene oxide are also suitable as suitable alkoxylation reagents. The production of the particularly preferred reaction products of fatty alcohol with alkoxides obeys the technical teaching of US Pat. No. 5,907,067. In principle, however, others are already in technology Known processes for the preparation of such alkoxides are suitable for producing these products. The pheromones b) dissolve in oil a) and thus enable more efficient insect control.
The present method according to the invention is generally used to control insects which lay their eggs in water. These will preferably be mosquitoes, including in particular the genera Anopheles quadrimaculatus and Aedes aegyptii. The method according to the invention is very particularly preferred for controlling mosquitoes of the genus Culex quinquefasciatus.
Essential to the invention is the selection of a suitable pheromone b) which stimulates the female insects to lay their eggs. In the case of combating Culex quinquefasciatus, such a pheromone is described, for example, in Japanese laid-open patent publication JP 85-205847. It is the 6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolite, which according to Journal of Agricultural food chemistry, vol. 47, p. 3411 is suitable to stimulate mosquitoes of the genus Culex quinquefasciatus to lay eggs on water. The combination of the film-forming oil a) with the pheromone b) results in increased efficiency in the control of such mosquitoes.
On the one hand, the method according to the invention can be carried out in such a way that the pheromone b) is first applied to the desired water and the oil a) with a time delay. However, it is advantageous to mix components a) and b) with one another and to apply them together to the water surface. Further suitable components a) are preferably selected from the group of mineral oil, diesel oil, petroleum, kerosene, petroleum ether and / or gasoline. It is also preferred to use mixtures of surfactants and other oils as component a) in the process according to the invention. The advantage of using surfactants of the type described above as component a) is their biodegradability and, at the same time, low toxicity. Another object of the present invention relates to the use of a combination of a nonionic surfactant, which forms a thin film on the water surface and b) a pheromone, which is suitable to induce the female mosquito to lay eggs to fight insects that have their eggs in Put off water.
