WVILLIAM L. MERSFELDER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HARDVVIOK STOVE (10., OF CLEVELAND, TENNESSEE.
DESIGN FOR A COOK-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 36,166, dated December 9, 1902.
Application filed November 3, 1902. Serial No. 130,007. Term of patent '7 years.
To all whowt it Duty concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. MERS- FELDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented and produced a new, original, and ornamental Design for Cooking-Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
In the drawing, which represents in perspective a cooking-stove, my design therefor is shown.
The leading feature of my design is shown I 5 in the novel, unique, and attractive figures inscribed and embossed upon the side of the stove.
A subordinate feature is the ornamental shape of the stove, with which the aforesaid surface ornamentation is combined.
Another subordinate feature of the stove is the ornamentation of the lower border and of the legs.
Another subordinate feature is the ornamentation of the front of the stove.
Referring to the other ornamentation of the side of the stove, it will be observed that a prominent feature thereof is the widesmooth convexly-curved extensions. These may be termed cameo embossments, somewhat resembling ribs, but they differ from ribs in the curvatures which they take. On the oven plate three of these ribs are somewhat of the form of a very open letter while the fourth rib partakes of the scroll or ogee design. The four ribs embrace a central portion, to which the incurved ends of these ribs point. The center may be provided, as shown, with a shield adapted to receive the name of the stove and of the maker or eitherof these names. Light delicate petal and scroll work are tastefully disposed at each side each embossed rib and in one instance so placed as to present the appearance of passing under the rib and extending at the other side thereof. On the shelf below a central incurvate rib is seen, attended at each side by a scroll-curved rib. Minor ornamentation is present in connection with these leading features of the shelf.
On the side plate of the stove, in front of the lower portion of the oven-plate, is a rib in the form of a scroll, and the adjacent spaces are occupied with small curved figures.
At the rear of the oven-door and on the main side plate is a rib of a scroll form, disposed and elegantly filling the space of the plate between the hinges of the oven-door. Delicate offshoots from. this rib extend upward behind and above the upper hinge and downward behind and below the lower hinge. This ornamentation appears very graceful and attractive. Across the coal or fire door extends diagonally one of these scroll ribs, the other corner-spaces of the door being occupied with delicate flower scrollwork of a conventional kind. The reservoir-plate (at the rear) carries three of these curved ribs. There is a long vertical rib near the front end of the plate and a shorter vertical rib near the rear end of the plate. The relative size of these ribs nicely occupies the main part of the plate, as the latter diminishes in size as it extends rearward. These ribs are of a C shape and are located back to back, thus conveying the impression of a character, as X. Below these ribs is another one, forming the border of the lower edge part of the plate and of a curve formed with ends incurvate in opposite directions. Light conven- 8o tional scroll flower-work is disposed so as to ornament the spaces on the reservoir-plate not occupied by these ribs. The lower border of the stove between the legs is likewise ornamented by ribs of a similar character, as shown, and the legs partake in a modified degree of this same style of ornamentation. Both the border last named and these legs are provided with light scroll flower-work to accompany these rib. On the remaining por- 9o tions of the stove which are ornamented the ornamentation partakes of the character already described.
The prominent characteristics of this ornamentation are the broad long ribs convexly curved in cross-section, and thus outraised toward the beholder, combined with a delicate scroll flower-work, which relieves the spaces not occupied by the ribs and yet does not detract from the emphasis of the ribs.
These ribs being smooth, as shown, reflect much light and impart to the stove a lustrous appearance. This luster of the ribs curved and disposed as shown upon the stove imparts to this stove a beautiful and unique design.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The ornamental design for a cook-stove, as [0 herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM L. MERSFELDER.
