UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES II. COFFMAN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE VVISGONSIN CHAIR COMPANY, OF PORT \VASHTNGTON, VVISOONSIN.
DESIGN FOR A CHAIR BACK AND SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Design N0. 32,237, dated February 13, 1900.
Application filed January 4, 1900. $eria1 No. 399- Term of patent 7 years.
To (Z5 whom it Duty concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. COFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin, in the State of Ohio, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Chair Back and Seat, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, showing a part thereof.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a chair back and seat, showing my design. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, taken on line a a in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the same, these three views being deemed necessary to fully illustrate my design.
The feature of my design for chair backs and seats consists in the peculiar surface formation of the same.
Mydesign relates to a bent-wood chair back and seat and may be described as follows:
The seat proper, or that portion of the design between the front edge I) b and the points 0 c in cross-section at the center, takes the form of an irregular compound curve, curving up and over from the front edge to the point 3, and from the point 3 downward to the point 4, and from point 4 to the point 2, forming the deepest part of the curve. All of the portion between the front edge and the points 0 0 will be straight across from side to side on its surface. At the point 2, or, more properly speaking, on a line taken between the points 0 c, or where the seat proper stops and the back portion begins, the curve ends, and from 2 my design in cross-section extends to its top or to the point 5 in the top edge on a straight line.
The upper edge of my design, between the two points d and d of the side edges, takes the 40 JAMES H. COFFMAN.
