UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. CIIRISTY, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
DESIGN FOR A SADDLE-SEAT FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 27,577, dated August 24, 1897. Application filed July 6. 1897. Serial No. 643,664. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IIENRY A. CnnisTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Ladies Saddle-Seat for Bicycles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the same.
This invention relates to saddle-seats, but more particularly to designs for the seats of saddles for-bicycles and velocipedes fol-ladies use.
The design consists, essentially, of the seat portion of the saddle having a main body portion which is substantially heart-shaped and formed with a marginal pendent flange or drooping edge and with a recess at either side of a centrally-disposed raised portion or bar extending longitudinally of the seat between the aforesaid recesses, said centrally-disposed raised portion having a recess or depression extending longitudinally thereof from a point between said sunken portions to near the front edge or apex of the heart-shaped figure.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and in which similarletters of reference are used to denote similar parts in different views, Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of a saddle-seat eon structed in accordance with my design. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan or bottom view of the seat shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 111 III of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A denotes the main body portion of the saddle-seat, which is substantially of the shape or configuration of aheart, the rear part of the scat being gently curved and its sides convex and having a gentle reverse curve toward the front and merging into each other at the apex of the heart-shaped figure.
The rear portion or edge and sides of the seat may be curved, as shown, the latter terminating in such manner as to form the apex of the heart-shaped figu re without the horn, which usually forms a continuation of the centrally-disposed bar a in mens saddles. On theopposite side or bot-tom of the seat appears a smooth or approximately flat substantially segment-shaped surface a at either side of a depression or recess a, which extends longitudinally of the seat from the rear edge thereof to the apex a said surfaces (1. being the bottoms of the recesses or depressions a" on the opposite side. Extending longitudinally of the recess a, on the under side of the seat, is a rib or raised portion a", which forms' the bottom of the recess (r on the upper or opposite side, and a depression or groove a extends around the marginal pendent flange or drooping edge of the seat portion A from the apex (I to the rearof the recess (1. at each side.
It will thus be seen that the leading features of my design reside in the substantially heartshaped configuration of the seat having a depression or recess in the bodyportion thereof at each side of its longitudinal center, a pendent marginal flange or edge overhanging its rear edge and the sides and apex of the heartshaped figure, and a centrally-disposed raised portion or bar extendinglongitudinallythereof and having a longitudinal recess in its upper surface, this saddle being distinguished from the design shown in the design patent issued to me June S,1897,No. 27,185, in that it is of a heart-shaped configuration and is without the truncated horn which characterizes my aforesaid patented design.
\Vhat I claim is- The design for a saddle-seat substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
W. S. COBB, F. II. Toner.
