DESI G N.
Patented Sept. 6, 1898.
J. H. DOFFMAN.
BENT WOOD CHAIR SEAT.
(Application filed Aug. 10, 1898.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES II. COFFMAN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE \VISCONSIN CHAIR COMPANY, OF PORT \VASIIINGTON, IVISCONSIN.
DESIGN FOR A BENT-WOOD CHAIR-SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 29,303, dated September 6, 1898.
Application filed August 10,1898. Serial No. 688,310. Term of patent 14 years.
To (ti-Z whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMES H. GOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Bent-\Vood Chain Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 52 is a central longitudinal vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. I is a front elevation of a bentwood chair-seat embodying my new design.
My design relates to the new and original shape or configuration of the article.
The leading or essential feature eonsistsin the unitary design for a bent-wood chair-seat made the subject of illustration, comprising the peculiar and novel shape of the top or upper portion A thereof, which from the rounded rear end of the seat at a as far forward as the points I) c b c is of the samehorizontal plane or level all along its rear and side portions, the forward limit of the horizontal plane of the rear portion being determined on a substantially semicircular line between the points d d, Fig. 1, whereby this described outer rear and side horizontal or level portion of the said top A is substantially of :J-shaped outline, the inner portion of the top A within said level outline or border being depressed below the plane of said level, as best indicated by the sectional views, Figs. 2 and 3, the greatest depth of depression being at the rear on the semicircular line e e, rising toward the rear between the semicircular lines (1 d and e e, and from the said line 6 6 extending upward and forward to the line between the points I) b, as best shown in Fig. 2. From said line between I: I) the forward part of the top A is carried over and down on a semicircular line to a line between the points ff, making a rolled or rounded front to the seat, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
Minor features of this design comprise long shallow inward curves of the sides of the top A from the points 9 g to the points h h and shorter and deeper outward curves from the points h h to the points i 1?, from which points to the front lower end of the top A the sides are formed on straight parallel lines, while the described rounded rear end a of the top A is curved all around bet-ween the points 9 g, all as best shown in Fig. 1. Also the lower frontedge is formed on straight lines between the points fjfj, while the said lower front edge between the pointsjj is shown formed on tlhe lines of two ogees meeting at the center 6.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for a bent-wood chair-seat, as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. COFFMAN.
Vitnesses:
ITHIEL J. GILLEY, GEORGE R. EMRICK.
