Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES h. \VAl/llll lR, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SHERMAN S. JEVVE'lTl & (10., Oh SAME PLACE.
DESlGN FOR A RANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 20,359, dated December 2, 1898.
Application filed July 14, 1890. Serial No, 368,746. Term of patent 14 years.
To ail whom it may concern.-
le it known that I, CHARLES E. WALTHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Design-for Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
This design is for a cooking-range; and its leadingfeatures consist of the novel orna- IO mentation of the range as a whole, and also in the novel ornamentation of the segregable parts thereof, as will be hereinafter described, and as is illustrated in the accompanying photographs, which show, in 15 Figure 1, a front view of the range, and in Fig. 2 a side View.
In each of the views the same referencecharacter indicates the same part.
The characteristic features of this design are the novel ornamentatious which are given to the range as a whole and to the various aocessory segregable parts thereof, such as the doors, the high shell, the reservoir-supports, the draft-flue, &o. The front of the body portion of the range has a pleasing effect, in that the doors A and B and the exposed end of the ash'box G are each provided with a framing 1, 2, and 3, respectively, which framings inclose panels, the 0 trainings being lighter in color than the panels. Upon the panel of the upper oven-door A there appears a design of heavy scroll-work 4, which resembles somewhat two letters 8 laid across and at right angles to each other. 5 The hinges of the door A have scroll append anges 5 extending upward at either side of the framing 1 of the door. Above the central portion of the warming-oven doorB is the fluedoor 8, which is provided with an oblong frame-like design. The knob or handle of this door and also the knob or handle of the slide-damper below the grate are of orna mental rosette design 27.
The front of the range is further orna- 5 mented, in that the draft- openings 21 and 22, arranged, respectively, above and below the fire-chamber, are oblong in shape, with their greatest dimensions arranged vertically. These openings are surrounded in each case 5: by a raised head or rib, as is also the slot through which the handle of each slidcdemper.
extends, and which is arranged across the middle of the central one of each series of openings, said bead or rib intersecting the head or rib around the central draft-opening.
The body of the range has an ornamental molding at the bottom, which consists of the bowed skirting 7, the nearly-vertical flange S, which rests upon the floor, and the narrow substantially-horizontal portion (1 between them, this last portion giving to the molding the appearance of being beaded. Surrounding the damper in the pipe below the high shelf D is an ornamental design 10. The damper is circular in outline, and the open- 6 ings into the pipe together form a cross, at the center of which is a rosette. Surrounding the damper is acireular rope-like design, from which radiate a number of rays, forming a star-like figure. The brackets which support the high shelf are of scroll-work. Each consists of a main coiled portion or scroll 11, of S shape, tapering toward either end from about its central portion, where it is twisted, as at 12. In the center of the lower 7 5 loop or coil of the scroll 11 is a star-shaped ornament 13. The various parts of the scroll 11 are connected with each other and with the range by scroll-work 14, which, while strengthening the brackets, gives also a light and pleasing effect thereto. The railing which surrounds the high shelf has at intervals twisted portions 15, and the standards or posts 16, supporting the railing, are also twisted and extended above the railing, where 8'5 they are provided with the star-shaped ornaments 17.
The design for the brackets which support the water-reservoir E is in general effect similar to that of the high-shelf bracketsthat is to say, it has a main scroll portion 18, with supplemental scroll-work, as 19, and a eentrally-arranged star ornament 20.
Each bracket 29 for the towel-bar H extends from the side of the range with an un- 5 der curve or bow, the outer end of the bracket being looped over and extended so as to rest upon the bracket aboutmidway of its length. Below the bracket and near the end where it joins the range is a loop 30, which gives to I00 the bracket as a whole (-1. more grneelful de sign.
