Description

PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST LAUSCHKE. OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO BARNHART BROS. & SPINDLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,971, dated March 19, 1889. Application filed Jlemmry 26, 1889., Serial H- 297,727. Term of patent 14 years.
To uZZ whom it may concern.-
lic it known that I, ERNST LAUSCHKE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-'iype, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.
This design comprises capital letters, figu res, points, two ornaments, dollar-mark, and character 6:. In general character itis medium heavy faced, slightly extended, made up of lines of substantially uniform width through- I 5 out. It is characterized by the fact .that the strictly horizontal lines are slightly narrower than the vertical or oblique lines, but not sufficiently so to present. a contrast. This is noticed in the lines of A, 13, (I, D, J, O, P, Q, 'R, S, T, U, and Z, in the interrogation-point, dollar-mark, and all the figures. It is further characterized by the conjunction of that feature with the further feature that horizontal and vertical strokes, making junction in slightly-rounded corners rather than sharp angles, are employed in place of continuous ovals and circles in the letters I), G, 0, Q, S, and U and several of the figures, the pcculiar effect of the design being due to the junction, in the manner described, of the horizontal and vertical lines of but slightly-different widths.
Another characteristic of the font found in the letter G, whose finishing cross-strokc or horizontal characteristic extends wholly inward with respect to the letter, the anglc. however, between said cross-stroke and the principal outline-stroke being finished with an acute ceriph pointing outward. The upper end of the final vertical strokes of ii, N, and U and of.the final oblique stroke of V, \V, X, and Yare slightly concaved in an oblique direction with respect to the stroke and a fine point thrown off from the stroke transversely thereto as the finish of said concarcd end.
I clai n1- ihe design for a font of printing-type herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at Chicago, Illinois, this 12th day of January, 1889.
ERNST LAUSOHKE.
