Description

UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICEO \VILLIAM H. JACKSON AND JOHN H. HANKINSON, OF N EVV YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A FIRE-PLACE OR GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 14,379, dated October 30, 18213,
Application filed August 3, 1833. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. J ACK- sox and JOHN H. HANKINSON, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Fronts or Casings of Fire Places or Grates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
The drawing represents a front elevation of this newly-designed fire-place casing, and presents a view of the upper surface of thehearth in perspective.
The leading and characteristic feature of this novel design, viewedin elevation, consists in a wrought or raised surface representingin combination two kinds of braid or basketwork.
In this design five panels are represented. The three larger ones present the figure of rectangular open basket-work or braid M in re lief, which covers their surface, and constitutes the principal ornamentation of the pilas ters A B and of the frieze or horizontal casing 0. Each of the two smaller panels D present figures of three rosettes arranged vertically near the upper corners of the casing, and a plane serpentine border encircles and unites them, substantially coveringthe panels. Each of the five panels is bounded with figures representing undulating close braid or basket work P, which also constitutes the entire marginal boundary ornamentation of the frieze and of the pilasters of the casing. The horizontal plane of the hearth 0 presents the appearance of a wrought fluted surface representing outwardly-divergcnt lines or grooves, which harmonize with the general character of the design and with its undulating mar ginal border.
\Ve claim as our invention- 1. The design for a fire-place or grate casing herein shown and described, the same consisting of the open rectangular basket-work panels M on the pilasters A B and frieze G, and the marginal ornamentation representing close undulating basket-work P.
2. The five-panel design for fire-place or grate casing herein shown and described, for the sides and top thereof, and the fluted ornamentation on hearth 0, representing outward- ]y-diverging grooves or lines at the bottom of the fireplace.
Witness our hands this 20th day of June, A D. 1883.
\VILLIAM H. JACKSON. JOHN H- HANKINSON.
