To a whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LEWIs B. TEBEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concord, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in I-Iand-Shields, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a hand-shield for protecting the palm and back of the hand and also a portion of the Wrist, leaving the thumb and fingers of the hand preferably free of any covering.

The device is particularly adapted for use by mechanics in protecting the hand Where tools, such as a hammer or mallet, are used continuously.

The invention consists in a hand-shield formed and constructed of sheet material, as hereinafter described, and particularly as pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a piece of sheet material from which my improved hand-shield may be manufactured, showing the inner face of the same, together with buttons and buttonholes, by means of which the tongue of the shield is attached to the palm and back portion of the hand. Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the completed shield. Fig. 3 illustrates the shield placed upon the right hand before the tongue is Wrapped around the wrist. Fig. 4 illustrates the back of the hand in a view similar to Fig. 3, except that the tongue is wrapped around the back portion of the Wrist and hand. Fig. 5 is an inside view of a hand with my improved hand-shield applied thereto.

Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

In the drawings, 6 is a piece of sheet ma terial, preferably flexible leather, so formed that opposite edges thereof may be joined together, as hereinafter described, to form my improved hand-shield. Said piece of sheet material consists of a hack portion 7, a palm portion 8, and a tongue 9. Buttons or studs 10 11 are fastened to said back and palm portions, respectively, While the tongue 9 is provided with reinforced buttonholes l2 and 13, which are respectively adapted to be engaged by the studs 10 and 11. A prejection 14 is adapted to form a finger-piece to receive the index-finger of the hand upon which said hand-shield is placed.

Assuming the sheet material to be as illustrated in Fig. 1, the edge 15 of the back portion is folded over and attached to the edge 16 of the palmportion. The edge 17 of the finger projection is sewed to the edge 18 thereof, all as illustrated in Fig. 2.

In using my improved hand-shield the hand is pushed into the shield with the palm portion 8 against the palm of the hand and the back portion 7 against the back of the hand, the index-finger projecting through the finger projection 14, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The tongue 9 is then folded around the Wrist portion below the thumb and the buttonhole 12 slipped over thestud 10 upon the back of the hand adjacent to the wrist. The tongue is then carried around to the under side of the Wrist adjacent to the rear portion of the palm and the buttonhole 13 slipped over the stud 11, as illustrated in Fig. 5. The device is then in readiness for use, and it will be seen that the fingers and thumb of the hand are perfectly h'ee for any use which may be required, while the palm, back, and wrist portion of the hand are completely protected from injury.

It Will be seen and understood that the device not only provides protection for the palm, back, and Wrist portions of the hand from injury, but also supplies a strengthening-support for the Wrist.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire by Letters Patent to secure, is v 1. As an article of manufacture, a handshield consisting of a piece of sheet material adapted to cover the back and palm of a hand and a tongue extending from the under side of the palm portion of said hand-shield and adapted to extend around the Wrist and to be fastened to the back portion of said handshield and extended to be fastened also to said palm portion.

2. As an article of manufacture a handshield consisting of a piece of sheet material adapted to cover the back and palm of a hand, the edge of the back portion thereof being permanently attached to the edge of the palm portion thereof and having a fingerpiece adapted to encircle and cover a portion of the index-finger of said hand, and a tongue extending from the under side of said (palm shield and adapted to extend around the portion and adapted to extend aroun the 1 Wrist and to be fastened to the back portion Wrist across below the thumb and to be fastened to the back portion of said hand-shield.
