SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 702,471, dated June 17, 1902.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. PIEROE,16 siding in the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New 5 York, have inventeda new and useful Hand- Guard and Wrist-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a hand-guard and a Wrist-supporter intended 10 especially for use in playing foot-ball and supporter to a glove, so as to provide the utmost protection to the wearer without being available for the purpose of inflicting an injury upon an opponent.
The invention further consists in the other new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the hand-guard and wristsupporter fiattenedout so as to show the exterior thereof. Fig. 2 represents the back of the guard and supporter as used. Fig. 3 represents the opposite side of the guard and supporter as shown in. Fig. 2.
The hand-guard and the Wrist-supporter are both secured to a glove A, provided with an opening a for the insertion of the thumb and with eyelets a, whereby the glove may be laced or secured to the wrist of the wearer.
3 5 The hand-guard 13 consists of a layer of protective material, such as leather or similar material, and is secured to the glove by stitching 1), so as to protect completely the back of the hand of the wearer. The edge portion Z) 0 of the glove is bent over the edge of the prosimilar material having flexible ends 0 of sufficient length to permit same to be wound one or more times around the wrist of the wearer. One end of the strap is preferably provided with a buckle c or other means for engaging the opposite end of the strap, whereby said ends may be secured together. By means of this construction the glove holds both the guard and the supporter in their proper relative positions on the hand of the wearer and prevents the same from slipping or becoming misplaced. The glove also connects these 'parts together, so as to form practically a single article which when once attached to the hands of the wearer needs no further adj ustment or attention. The top of the protective layer is padded by the overturned portion of the glove, and all danger of injury which would otherwise be caused by the hard edge of the protective layer is thereby avoided. Preferably leather is used for the protective layer; but various other substances that will afford the necessary protection to the bones of the hand may be used as a substitute therefor. It is obvious also that the flexible ends of the wrist-supporter can be made long enough to encircle the wrist'as many times as may be deemed necessary or desirable.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination in a glove of a handguard comprisinga layer of protective material secured to the back thereof, and a wristsupporter comprising a flexible strap secured to the wrist portion'thereof.
2. A hand-guard and wrist-supporter comprising a glove having a layer of protective material secured to the back thereof and having the edge portion of the glove turned over the edge of said protective layer and secured to the outside thereof, and a flexible strap secured to the wrist portion of the glove, substantially as described.
3. A hand-guard and wrist-supporter comprising a glove having a layer of protective material secured to its back by sewing and having the edge portion of the glove turned over the edge of said protective layer and secured to the outside thereof by sewing, and a wrist-supporter secured to the wrist portion of the glove by sewing and provided with flexible ends adapted to be wound around the wrist portion of the glove and secured at the back thereof, substantially as described.
