GUSTAVUS TROXLER, .OF N EWARK,-NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-FIFTH TO FRANK SANGER AND ONE-FIFTH TO ARTHUR DECKER OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, AND ONE-FIFTH TO RICHARD THRUSH AND ONE-FIFTH TO GEORGE MUNSICK, OF NEW- ARK, NEW JERSEY- BOXING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS TRoxLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledto provide a novel and simply constructedv boxing device adapted to be worn on the hands of boxers when engaged in a bout. Said boxing device is constructed with a view to protect the boxers from the force and bruising effects of the blows of the adversary, in such a manner that all the exercise of skill in the art of boxing may be obtained, while at the same time eliminating the danger of physical hurt, which the present form of padded boxing-glove, in its many forms, does not entirely accomplish.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
With these various objects of the present invention in View, the said invention con sists, primarily, in the novel boxing device hereinafter more fully described.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the boxing device made according to and embodying the principles of this invention, said view showing the manner of holding the device in the left hand; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional representation of the device, said view showing in connection therewith, partly in elevation and partly in section, an air-inflated sphere or ball of a flexible and resilient material, such as rubber; and Fig.
3 is a detail sectional representation taken on line 33 in said Fig. 1, a lacing shown in said Fig. 1, however, being omitted from said Fig. 3.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates acomplete boxing device showingone embodiment of the principles of the present invention, and 2 indicates an inner and air-inflated sphere or ball which is made from a flexible and resilient material, such as rubber or the like, the said ball or sphere 2 being inclosed in a suitably constructed outer casing or shell 3 of leather, orany other similar and suitable material.
The reference-character 4 indicates a suitably formed loop-which is suitably secured to the said outer casing or shell 3, and which provides a suitable handle or grip. Suitably secured at' difi'erent points to the said outer-casing or shell 3, as at 5, are a number of rearwardly extending straps 6, made of leather or the like, said straps terminating, as at 7, and being suitably secured to a vwrist member 8, also of leather or the like,
the two ends of which are separated, as at 9, and as clearly indicated in the dotted outline of Fig. 1 in the drawings. This member 8 is provided near each end with a series of holes or perforations 10 and a lacer or cord 11, the member 8 providing a cuif which is adapted to be placed upon the wrist and is adapted to be secured in position by means of the lacer or cord 11, substantially as and in the manner illustrated in said Fig. 1 of the drawings.
g In order to obviate any possible danger of injury from the straps 6, each strap may be provided with a suitable facing, as 12, made of any suitable material, each facing forming with the strap 6 a pocket 18 in which is arranged a padding 14% of any suitable material; and, the lacer 11 may be protected by means of a covering or guard 15, substantially as shown.
From the foregoing description, it will be clearly seen, that I have devised a boxing device which is used in the manner similar to the usual glove employed in boxing, and which when secured to the wrist and grasped in the hand can be used in a graceful and effective manner, with speed and skill, and at the same time practically eliminating any danger of physical injury.
Of course I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements of the combinations of parts comprising the device, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of parts as described in the said specification, nor do Iconfine myself, tothe exact details of the construction of said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A boxing device comprising a hollow pneumatic body,.a hand-hold secured to the rear external portion of said pneumatic body and adapted to be grasped by the hand 'to present said pneumatic body in front of the fist, and means for steadying said pneumatic body in such relation to the fist coinprising a cufl-like member or wrist-band,
and a plurality of straps extending from said cuff-like member or wrist-bandtoportions of-said pneumatic body outlying from said hand-hold.
2'. A boxing device comprising a" hollow ball shaped member adapted to be inflated with air, said ball-shaped member being made from a flexible and resilient material, a substantially non-resilient casing inclosing said ball-shaped member, a hand-hold secured to the rear external portion of said casing and adapted to be grasped by the hand to present said incased hollow ballshaped member in front of the fist, and means for steadying the same in such relation to the fist.
3. A boxing device comprising a hollow ball-shaped member adapted to be inflated with air, said ball-shaped member being made from a flexible and resilient material, a substantially non-resilient casing inclos ing said ball-shaped member, a hand-hold secured to the rear external portion of said casing and adapted to be grasped by the hand to present said incased hollow ballshaped member in front of the fist, and means for steadying the same in such relation to the fist, comprising a cuff-like me1nher or wrist-band, and a plurality of straps extending from said cuff-like member or Wrist-band to portions of said casing outlying from said hand-hold.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of April, 1911.
