SLAPPING-GLOVE. i
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Application led May 16, 1910. Serial No. 561,633.
To all whom it mag/concern:
Beit known that I, HERBERT H. PEASE,-a citizen of the United States, residing at Port l/Villiams, in the county of Clallam and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slapping- Gloves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in gloves, and more particularly to a slapping glove to b e used in boxing and other sports or exerclsing.
The object of the invention is to provide a glove of this character which will be light in weight and very soft and yielding so that it will be imposslble for two boxers using the gloves to bruise the flesh or otherwise injure each other, and I accomplish this object by the peculiar shape of an inflated rubber bag which forms the body of the glove, and provides a soft leather covering for the bag or body.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fullydescribed and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved slapping glove showing the same collapsed; Flg. 2 is a longitudinal section through the glove with its air bag inflated; Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the air bag or inflatable body of the glove; and Fig. 5 is a or body before it is folded upon itself, a portion of the bag being broken away.
My improved slapping glove comprises an outer casing 1 lwhich is made of chamois skin or other soft leather, or other material so that it will not injure the skin, :and it is also made of oval or egg-shape and is without the usual thumb found on boxing gloves. My glove also comprises an inflatable body 2 of peculiar shape in construction and made in the form of a bag of rubber or other elastic material, and the glove further comprises an inner handfreceiving casing or niitt 3 which is arranged entirely within the body or bag 2. i The inflatable body 2 is composed of an elongated rubber bag having enlarged substantially circular end portions 4 united by a contracted central portion 5, in which lat-- plan view of the bagl ter is a central opening 6, as will be understood on reference to Fig. 5. This elongated bag is folded upon itself so that its two end portions 4 are brought together and 60 their extremities are cemented together or otherwise united at 7, whereby the two portions4 have a space between them to receive the hand which may be thrust throughthe opening 6. will be seen that the hand will lie entirely within the inflatable body or bag, and especially when the latter is inflated so that it expands and entirely fills the space within the outer oval-shaped casing 1. the center of the elongated rubber bag is provided an inflating tube 8 of soft rubber which may be closed by4 a suitable valve if desired, or which may be merely tied with a piece of string or cord after the body has been inflated for the purpose of retaining it in such position. 'This tube 8 extends through an opening in the inner end of the soft outer casing 1, at which end of the latter is a' tubular extension or wrist portion 9 8( which may be reinforced by a surrounding band 10, and which may have on its inner side a longitudinal slit 11 provided along opposite edges with holes or eyelets l2 to receive a lacing cord or strap 13, whereby the,85
wrist portion of the glove may be drawn tight against the wrist of the hand to retain the glove thereon.
. The inner casing or mitt 3 is provided to lretain the hand centrally between the folded 90 end portions 4 of the body 2 and it is preferably in the form of an ordinary mitt and made of leather or ,other suitable material. It is provided lwith a tubular wrist or arm portion 14, which latter extends through the wrist portion 9 of the outer casing and is secured thereto and has a longit-udinal slit coincident with and secured to the slit in the inner side ofthe casing l. A reinforcing 15 may be arranged around the inner 100.
band `face of .the wrist portion 14v of the inner casing or mitt, and if desired openin s 16 for the purpose of ventilation may be ormed in the wrist portions of the glove as shown.
In order to prevent the rubber bag from Vslipping or shifting about wit-hin the outer casing I preferably employ two anchoring strips 17 which are passed through the opening 6 in the central portion of the bag and have their ends attached to the inside of the casing and the outside ofthe mitt.
My improved slapping glove is to be used Owing to this construction it 65 Adjacent 70 in use, thereby enabling them to be -con` outer casing, an inflatable elastic the same as the ordinary boxing glove, and owing to its peculiar construction it can be used by women and children as well as men, since it is exceedingly soft and yielding and the flesh can not be bruised, nor the skin injured by the use of the glove. The peculiar construction of the inflatable body or bag 2 provides an air cushion all around the hand of the wearer, and the soft chamois skin outer covering 1 renders injury to the person quite impossible. n
The glove not only protects the person who is slapped or struck by it, but it also protects the hand which wears it, and one who uses my improved glove will not-have his knuckles or fingers bruised or otherwise injured or disfigured.
It will be further noted that the glove is exceedin ly light and consequently will not tire the oxer and will enable him to move about more quickly, andI that since the bag or casing 2 is deflatable, the gloves may be folded into a very compact bundle when not veniently carried. n
Having thus described the invention, what is clalined is: 1
l. slapping g ove comprising a so t outer casing and an inflatable elastic body for the reception of the hand arranged within the casing and entirely filling the same, said body having thumb and finger stalls centrally located therein and flexibl connected to the walls of said body), w ereby the entire hand is surrounded y the inflatable body.
2. A slapping glove comprising)` a soft j ody arranged within the casing and composed of an elongated bag having enlarged end portions and a contracted central portion formed with an opening, said bag being folded upon itself and having the extremiv ties of its large end portions united, whereby a space is provided between the end portions of the ba for 'the reception of the hand..
p 3.' A s apping glove comprislng a soft outer casing, an niatable elastic body ar ranged within the casing and composed of an elongated bag having enlarged end portions and a contracted -central portion formed with an opening, said bag being folded upon itself and having the extremities of its large end portions united, whereby a space is provided between the end portions of the bag for the reception of the hand, and a hand-receiving mitt or inner casing arranged within the space between the two end portions of the bag and having its wrist portion projecting through said opening in the bag, and united to the outer casing.
4. A slapping glove comprising a soft, oval-shaped outer casing formed at one end with a tubular wrist portion, an inflatable elastic body formed from an elongated bag5 having enlarged end portions and a contracted central portion provided with an opening, the end portions of said bag being brought together 'and united at their extremities, whereby a space is formed between said portions for the reception of the hand when the latter is thrust through the opening in the central portion of the bag, an inner casing or mitt arranged within the space between the end portions of said bag and having a wrist portion extending through said opening in the bag and through the wrist portion of the outer casing, the two wrist ortions being united and formed with coinci ent longitudinal slits, reinforcing pads surrounding the wrist portions of the inner and outer casings, means for' closing the slit in said wrist plortions to fasten the glove tothe wrist of t e wearer, and an iniating tube projecting from the inflatable body or bag and extending through said c outer casing.
5. A slapping glove comprisin a soft outer casing, an inflatable elastic ody arranged within the casing and composed of an elongated bag having enlarged end portions and a contracted central portion formed with an opening, said bag being folded upon itself, whereby a space is ro,- vided between the ond portions of the ag for reception of the hand, a mitt between the spaced portions of the bag to receive the hand, and anchoring strips passed through thecentral opening of the bag and having their ends attached whereby the bag or body will be prevented from slipping within the inner casing.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HERBER'1`-H. PEASE.
