THE COLUMBIA PLANOURAPH ,c0., WASHINGTON, D. c.
GEORGE L. PIERCE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
LEG-GUARD EOE HOCKEY-GOAL KEEPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1916.
Application filed August 5, 1915. Serial No. 43,808.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. PIERCE, citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leg- Guards for Hockey-Goal Keepers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to guard the legs of hockey goal keepers, and comprises a cushioned or padded guard adapted to protect the shin and thigh and at the same time while giving protection to the knee to permit perfect action of the knee joint.
The invention consists in a lower and an upper section connected by an intermediate or knee section in which the pads extend laterally of the pads of the upper and lower sections.
In the drawing the invention is shown in Figure 1 in a front view, Fig. 2 in a rear View, and F ig. 8 a section on line 3-3 of Fig. l. a
As illustrated in the drawing there is a lower section A and an upper section B, with a knee section C. The lower section has an opening a to fit the foot so as to allow the padded section on each side to protect the ankle and protection is afforded the lower limb by four pads 6 extending parallel to each other and vertically, the two middle pads being stitched across as shown at 0 to allow flexibility at this point. The lower section is completed by the use of two outer padded parts 02 extending outwardly therefrom. The straps 0 having suitable buckles are provided for attachment of the guard around the leg. The upper section B has vertical padded portions f preferably five in number, and at the margins straps and buckles are provided for attachment. At the base of the upper vertical pads are laterally extending or horizontal pads g, which are adapted to fit over the knee and allow freedom of action of the knee joint without in any'wise interfering with the protection afforded by the pads. As shown at h, triangular unpadded sections are provided between the horizontally extending pads at the outer ends thereof so as to add to the freedom of movement of the parts. Preferably the upper edge of the section is inclined so as to conform to the shape of the body.
It will be observed that the straps for the lower section are fastened to the outside padded sections d, and pass over these sections and through openings between these sections, and the first pad VI) to the inside, and this tends to hold the outer padded portions extended and under a certain amount of tension so as to receive any blow instead of having this come directly upon the leg as it would if the outer pads hugged the leg.
What I claim is 1. A leg guard for hockey goal keepers or the like, consisting of upper and lower sections having a series of padded portions, an intermediate middle section having laterally extended padded portions, the lower section having outer portions with means for distending them, substantially as described.
2. In a leg guard for hockey goal keepers a lower section having padded ribs, the central ribs having slight flexibility and with an opening for the foot, side pads, means adapted to keep said side pads extended and upper and knee sections suitably padded, substantially as described.
3. A leg guard for hockey goal keepers comprising a lower padded section with side sections (Z and means for keeping said sections extended consisting of straps c secured to the front outer edges of the sections d, passing over the front of said sections and through openings to the rear with suitable fastening means for the ends, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE L. PIERCE.
