ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,465, dated December 1, 1896.
Application filed November 29, 1895. Serial No. 570,468. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, SALLIE M. WVOOLFOLK and NANNIE URSULA NEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Orange, in 'the county of Orange and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Abdominal and Dorsal Supports, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to abdominal and position to effect these results, its lower atcaching-straps being combined with suspensory hose-fastenings so arranged that the moderate tension upon said fastenings shall maintain the lower straps in normal position and preserve thereby the proper position of both abdominal and dorsal supports under all the diiferent positions which the body of the wearer may assume.
Our invention consists to these ends in the several novel features of construction and new combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and then particularly pointed out and defined in the claim which concludes this specification.
To enable others to fully understand and to make and use our said invention, we will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being had for this purpose to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a view showing the abdominal and dorsal supporter spread out upon a flat surface in order to show every part.
The front 1 of this supporter may be composed of a solid piece of elastic webbing or of several strips of similar material united to side sections 2,0f cloth,interlined and stitched. On these side sections 2 are fastened four buckles, (indicated by the numeral 3,) two on each upper side edge. At the bottom are two straps 4 of non-elastic webbing, to which in turn are appended hose-suspenders, made of non-elastic webbing 5 and elastic webbing 6, strong enough to hold the supporter in proper position.
The back 7 of the supporter is composed of a center piece fourteen inches in length by seven inches breadth, or thereabout, and filled with a number of steels 8 carefully covered with cloth to prevent them from rubbing through to the outside. The side sections 9 of this center piece extend two-thirds the distance upward from the lower edge, or thereabout, and are also interlined and stitched, having one steel in each. On the upper side of each of these side sections are two straps 1O 10 of non-elastic webbing that fasten into the buckles 3 011 the front side sections. tions are buckles 12, to which the straps 4 on the front side sections are fastened.
The straps 5 are attached to the elastic strips of webbing 0 by buckles 13, and the webbing-strips 6 are each provided with suitable clasps lat of any preferred kind adapted to engage the stockings. The point of attachment of the depending straps 5 to the straps 6 not only brings said straps 5 upon the outer sides of the limbs, but the tension caused by supporting the hose preserves the normal position of the abdominal supporter under all positions assumed by the body, the draft upon the depending straps 16 being just sufficient to accomplish this result.
The dorsal support extends over the entire back, or substantially so, the elastic strips or stays giving support to the spine and the muscles of the back, thereby allaying the aching sensation and feeling of extreme weariness in the lower portion of the back and between the shoulders.
The chief merits claimed for this supporter are twofold: first, the annexing the backsupporter; second, the suspensory hose ad- 3' ustmeut which does away with the fastenings under the body, which have been necessary heretofore, and which are extremely disagreeable to the person wearing such supporters.
What we claim is- In an abdominal and dorsal support and hose-supporter, combined, a continuous back portion formed in a single piece supported by stays, and having lateral extensions above and below which said continuous portion extends, a front portion also formed in one piece and having elastic webbings interposed between and connected to two side pieces sup- On the lower part of the side secported by stays, straps to connect the lateral extensions of the back to the upper ends of the side pieces, single straps to connect the lower ends of the side pieces to lower end of the back portion, and straps secured to said single straps at or near the middle points of the latter and provided with hose-clasps, substantially as described.
