TROUSERS-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. a0, 1906.
A li ati n med December 1,1905. Serial no. 289,823.
- and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Trousers-Support, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a supporting device for trousers which may remain an integral portion of the waistbandsection of the trousers and which will be hygienic, supporting the weight of the trousers from the hips solely and not from the waist,
which is customary when a belt is employed, and, further, to so construct and apply the supporting device that suspenders are entirely dispensed with.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide a supporting device for trousers applicable to any style of garment and which can be adjusted as desired to sustain the garment at the hips without in any manner interfering with the usual back-straps, which supporting device when worn will admit of free diaphragmic or abdominal breathing and will afford absolute freedom of motion and which will protect the kidney region of the body against undue pressure.
Another purpose of the invention is to so construct and apply the device that it will be concealed while in use.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the improved device, the trousers to which attachment is made being shown by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device, the trousers being also shown by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device, the trousers to which it is applied being shown by dotted lines. Fig. 4 is an inner face view of one section of the device, drawn upon an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a belt employed in connection with the device; and Fig. 6 is a sectional perspective view of one section of the device, drawn upon an enlarged scale and illustrating the manner in which a guide-loop for the belt is applied thereto.
The device is constructed, primarily, in two sections A and A, which I arbitrarily term side sections, the said sections extending from the fly portion of the trousers A to points near the back, and a belt B, carried by the said side sections.
Each section A and A is constructed of any suitable or approved materialas, for example, a fabricas the said sections A and A are applied to the inner face of the trousers A at the waist, fly, and hip sections thereof, as is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Each section is provided with an upper edge 10, curved to follow the curvature of the waistband, and a straight inclined lower edge 11, the inclination of said lower edge being from the rear in direction of the front, so that the rear end 12 of each section A and A is narrower than its forward end 13.
Each section A and A is provided upon its inner face with any desired number of loops C. These loops 0 are preferably made of leather and extend from the lower edge of a section upward at the inner face of the section. Ordinarily each section is provided with two loops Uone near the forward end and the other near its rear end. These loops C consist of a suitable strip of material in which a longitudinal slot 1 1 is produced and the lower ends of the loops C are usually carried under the lower edges of the sections A and A and up at the front a predetermined distance, as is shown particularly at 15 in Fig. 6, and the lower end portions of the loops are secured to the said sections A and A by stitching or other means. At the rear outer and inner edge of each loop C lines of stitching 16 are placed, securing these portions of the loops to the said sections A and A, as is shown in Fig. 4, leaving the forward inner and outer edges of the loops free for the passage of the body 17 of the belt B, heretofore mentioned, the body of which belt may be of any suitable or approved material, preferably elastic and the body 17 of the belt B is provided with a suitable take-up mechanism 18 and with suitable fastening devices 19 at the end portions of the body, as is shown in Fig. 5.
In applying the sections A and A to the trousers A the rear ends of the said sections are attached to the lining of the trousers or to the body material of the trousers at the inside by means of lines of stitching 20, and such attachment is made at each side of the rear central portion of the waist-section of the trousers or at the end portions of ,the back-straps 21, as is best shown in Fig. 1. Next the said sections A and A are attached by lines of stitching 22 at their upper edges to the inner portion of the trousers at the lower edge of the waist band 23, as is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and each side section A and A is attached by lines of stitching 24 to the hip or outer side seam-sections 25 of the trousers, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3, and, finally, the forward ends of the said sections A and A are connected to the fly of the trousers, as is indicated at 24* in Fig. 2, one side section being attached to one portion of the fly and the other side section to the other portion of the fly. Thus when the body 17 of the belt is passed through the loops 0 of the said side sections A and A the said belt may be tightened up so as to make the trousers-support cling closely to the body at the hip and below the waist, and the formation of the side sections A and A is such that their rear portions extend above what is the opening for the hip-pockets, as is shown in Fig. 3, and down well over the abdomen at the front, as'is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. It is likewise obvious that the back-strap 21 may be tightened or loosened, as desired, without interfering with the action of the attachment. It is also obvious that the attachment is con cealed, and the only portion that appears is the buckle portion of the belt B when the fly of the trousers is opened.
It will be observed that by means of the improvement described the trousers are supported in a manner equal to that obtained by the use of suspenders and superior to baggy slouchy support obtained by the use of a belt alone.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A trousers-supporting device, comprising pliable side sections for attachment to each side of the inner surface of a pair of trousers and extending from the fly to a point adjacent to the rear central portion of the trousers, the upper edges of said sections meeting the waist band of the trousers, and the lower edges curving forwardly to the hipseams and forwardly and downwardly to the fly, said lower edges being provided with spaced loops, and a belt carried by the loops.
2. The combination with a pair of trousers, of a supporting device consisting of side sections constructed of a pliable material and wider at their forward than at their rear ends, the forward ends of the said sections being attached to the fly of the trousers and their rear ends to the rear portion of the trousers at opposite sides of a central vertical line, the upper portions of the said sections being attached to the trousers adjacent to the waistline, and the intermediate portions of the side sections being attached to the trousers at the hip-seams, and a belt carried by the said side sections.
3. The combination with a pair of trousers, of side sections of a pliable material, wider at their forward ends than at their rear ends, the forward ends of which side sections are attached to the fly of the trousers at the inside thereof, and their rear ends to the rear portions of the trousers at each side of a central vertical line, the intermediate portions of said side sections being attached to the trousers at the hip-seams and their upper edges attached to the trousers adjacent to the waistband, loops located at the inner face of said side sections adjacent to their lower edges, and a belt passed through said loops, the locking device of the belt being adjacent to the forward ends of the said side sections.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROY FERDINAND PARRIS.
