Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELrNoR TEMPLE, a subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to minimize the discomfort and risk of pregnancy by, in particular :1. Making adequate provision for expansion as and when required. 2. Supporting the increasing weight as pregnancy advances, so as to relieve the abdominal walls and muscles of undue strain. 3. Enabling breathing to be performed easily and naturally both in front and back. These results are obtained by making each half of my said corset in sections; of corset material; cross lacing, and elastic material respectively; and by providing for addition and attachment thereto, a curved or hollowed belt or pouch so .shaped and formed so as to receive and support the lower part of the abdomen from underneath, such belt or pouch being suspended from the corset by means of cross over straps attached respectively to each half of the corset at the back, about the waist line and brought in opposite directions over the hips to the respective points of attachment at each end of the belt in front.

The relative positions and normal proportions of the various sections constituting each half of my said corset, together with the shape and details of construction and the method of attachment and suspension and also the position in wear of the supporting belt or pouch are shown in the accompanying drawings, numbered respectively 1, 2, 3, 4:, in all of which. A indicates generically corset material, I) elastic material and 0 cross lacing.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a front view of one form of corset with supporting belt constructed according to my invention, as applied in an advanced stage of pregnancy. Fig. 2 is a back view and Fig. 3 is a side view thereof. Fig. 4 is a front view of the supporting belt removed from the corset and opened out fiat.

Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3: In these figures A are two sections of ordinary corset material, on one side of each of which is inserted a busk; the other side being eyeleted for lacing to the next section 6 The width of the opening C between sections A and (elastic) is regulated by adjusting the lace.

b is a section composed of elastic bands as shown (or alternatively of elastic material) the elastic bands or elastic material being inserted in corset material edged with tape and eyeleted to receive the lace by which section b is attached to section A. The elastic bands (or elastic material) forming section b are inserted in and stitched into a section of corset material forming section A The back of the corset is shown in Fig. 2 wherein A are parts of the sections already mentioned and b are back sections of elastic bands (or of elastic material) similar to 72 The elastic sections 6 are inserted in and stitched into sections A and A respectively. The back sections A are made of corset material eyeleted as usual to receive a back lace. Whalebone of suitable thickness is usually inserted as shown by the dotted lines W also at the middle of the side sections A and inside the eyelets at the back A Fig. 4 shows the supporting belt or pouch opened out flat. This belt is suitably shaped to fit around and underneath the abdominal arch. Hooks E on each end thereof engage with any of a series of eyelets F in cross-over straps Gr attached to the back meeting edges of the corset at or preferably above the waist line. A is a central section of corset material suitably boned in the center and sides as shownat W; b is an elastic section at each side and A are the end sections of corset material.

What I claim is:

A corset comprising front, back, and side sections of corset material, lacings between said back sections, elastic sections sewed to said side and back sections for connecting the latter, elastic sections secured along the front edges of said sidesections, adjustable lacings connecting said last elastic sections and front sections, cross straps secured to said back section above the waist line, in combination with a supportin belt comprising front and side sections 0% corset material,
